Sprint Still Bleeding Customers
Though their finances start to look better...
by Karl Bode Thursday 19-Feb-2009 tags: business · wireless
Sprint's fourth quarter earnings indicate that the wireless carrier is slowly resolving its financial issues thanks to a 14% workforce reduction, but the company is still losing customers at an alarming rate after their botched acquisition of Nextel. While Sprint's earnings beat analyst estimates, the company lost 1.3 million net wireless customers on the quarter. Sprint's "churn" (customer turnover) rate was 2.16 percent, which was up from last quarter but down from one year earlier. Despite the fact they still show up last in customer satisfaction survey, Sprint continues to insist they're turning things around.

Hope they're still around for my free Kindle2 access

I just hope they are still around to get a couple years of free wireless access for the new Kindle 2 I bought. Hate to have to use only USB connections to get my books and magazines downloaded when travelling.

I love Sprint

I had Verizon for 5 years.
I switched to Sprint because I could never get anyone on the phone at Verizon that could do anything for me.

I had no service at all in my home.
I can see the tower from my house.

So instead of dealing with customer service at Verizon Wireless, which was useless, I called sprint and ported over 3 numbers. They spoke English, they sent me 3 phones 2nd day air, and I have 4-5 bars in my home.

Sprint followed up with phone call.
I have now had them 3 years and they continue to give me updated phones for free, replace broken ones, and I always have coverage.

I had one Sprint billing problem, called, and it was fixed.
Verizon I fought with them 1 year AFTER I had switched.

So I am sure this differs with area, but everyone around here has Verizon. Maybe Verizon has better commercials, but I would never go back.

I have had sprint since '01 and love the service. Did have some billing issues, but those were resolved in a prompt manner.

I think sprint is suffering from bad PR and just not enough money to fight verizon's marketing propaganda.

Identical story here---coming up on eight years as a Sprint customer.

For resolving non-technical problems, I've had way better luck with eCare in recent years than phone support.

I might go with Sprint except for the fact they choose not to service my area. If they are having a problem keeping customers they better damn well start trying to get new ones. As it is I'm with Verizon since they actually service my area. Even have EDVO in my area. Also there is a Verizon store in my area. I think the nearest Sprint place is 50 miles away.

No Problems Here

No problems with Sprint either, even when there is a dispute with my bill, I always get my way! They are good people and I plan to stay with them for a long time. Besides Verizon charges $39.99 for internet for the cell - Sprint is $15 - can't beat that.

Dude are you seriously a spokesperson for Sprint LMAO

They have customer service in India. Verizon Wireless has all centers inside the USA!

I am glad Pres. Obama is giving tax breaks to companies who keep workers here in the USA.

That's funny. I stayed at a campground in Youngsville and both me and my wife couldn't get reception on our Sprint phones and my parents could on their Verizon phones.

Just goes to show you that it simply doesn't matter and they're all crap in the end.

The only place where I lost coverage from Sprint was when I went camping on a Mountain up in Barryville, NY. Verizon actually did have some service on the way up (not the actual campgrounds) which I was able to use since Sprint gives me free roaming.

Overall I'm much happier with Sprint than I was with ATT (haven't have Verizon since before digital). Better coverage, and customer service... at least in my experience.

I haven't been happy with Sprint, but I was even more unhappy with Nextel.

Sprint still seems to lose my text messages into thin air. Calls still drop. I still hit random tiny areas of no coverage, just enough to disconnect you if you're driving.

Cell phones are the only things on the planet that we accept that won't work and I don't understand why. If our cars behaved like our cell phones we'd run them back to the dealer. If our TV just quit working every now and then we'd take it back to the store.

Shouldn't be talking on the cell phone while driving anyhow!!

BTW I have had Sprint since 2000. No troubles at all. One billing error on a new phone. Called, they spoke clear English, and promptly corrected the mistake.

You may want to check that your phone is set to automatic and not Sprint only. If verizon had signal there and you had none then your phone should have roamed onto Verizon. I have seen phones from stores in FL that go out set on Sprint only and causes those people a lot of headaches when they get way off the beaten path.

Sprint is ok

I switched from Sprint to Verizon and went prepaid, which was more expensive in the long run. Two months ago I switched back to Sprint, I got a great phone (Samsung Rant), tethered, and good customer service. The longest wait time on hold for CS has been about 30 seconds. I see nothing wrong with Sprint, and Verizon can go fly a kite.

I had Verizonwireless forever, in fact my wife still has an account there - we formally shared a family plan. However when my VZW contract ended I jumped over to Sprint. I needed a BlackBerry/Email/Internet and the $99 Everything deal at Sprint is tough to pass up on. I love unlimited everything, and I do use everything. For the same service at VZW I would have been out of at least $150/month. I wish VZW did have a $100 unlimited everything deal because I do miss the great network. My Sprint BB doesnt seem to have the same range in my area as VZW and there are some disconnects I experience which almost never happened with VZW. Oh well, the price is too good. Just watching live CNN, FOX, videos, movies etc... all day on my Sprint BB justifies the switch.

Really? I've found Sprint coverage to be stellar where I go, or at least just as good as any other national carrier. If they do roam, it's fre and the roaming signal is of course generally great.

There's no way I'm leaving Sprint as long as I can keep my current plan. 500 minutes, unlimited nights and weekends starting at 5 p.m. (yes, 5 p.m.), unlimited M2M, text, MMS, web. $30 per month plus $6 in taxes and fees. For the moment $10 extra for TeleNav. Always $7 extra for insurance; I have a smartphone.

Such a plan would cost probably $40 + $20 + $15 + $5 + $10 + $10 = $100 or so, plus taxes and fees, on another carrier. Why would I switch? Sprint is rock-solid in my experience, broadband speeds over cellular are quite good, and customer service, when I've needed to call them, have been reasonably helpful, though I've had better.

Here's hoping Sprint is going to stick around. If they don't, I'll have to go back to prepaid, likely losing a ton of features in the process. I''m certainly not paying $50 a month for voice-only to Verizon or AT&T, and T-Mobile's coverage is a bit flakey and they don't have 3G in most places still...

Yeah, with roaming I always have signal. And it is free roaming. I have to use roaming when I am at my house all the time, and I make 70% of my calls there.

Sprint has the best deals(I have a 3 year old deal that is much better), it is just the bad PR that is losing customers. Plus they are trying to pull in a better variety of phones. And now they are going to have to wait 2 years for everyone to get out of their iPhone contracts before they start getting customers back.

Sprint has much better roaming agreements than Verizon. I've used Sprint in very obscure places in South Dakota and Montana on trips with no issue - including data roaming. Sprint also roams on Verizon in some cases (data too but only 2G at the moment).

There was an independent study that shows Sprint has the most coverage when you include roaming but true, native coverage is not as high as Verizon.

I have no problems with Sprint. Customer support is better but still not great. I only call a couple times a year so there are other daily factors more important to me than support.

Re: Sprint is ok

That's probably because Sprint ends up roaming on Verizon Wireless

I had Verizon Wireless once - horrible billing, poor CS and dropped calls. Left for AT&T in 2002, and I'm still on AT&T.

As far as Sprint goes, I have a work line that was a Nextel BlackBerry 8510 / 7100i (brick).
Attempt to 'upgrade' it to Sprint was like pulling teeth.
Treo 800W has horrible battery life.
Voice quality on Sprint isn't quite as good as it was on iDEN/Nextel.

That would depend on the phone model. CDMA as a whole is much better than iDen (and GSM) for voice but there are some CDMA phones that have poor speakers, etc. So it's more likely the phone than the network.

I've had many phones on Sprint over the years (and variety on family plan) and each phone sounds different. Some great, some not so much.

Re: Sprint is ok

This is using Bluetooth (same Motorola HS700).
The audio on the BB 7100i is a bit on the tinny side, but VERY consistent on quality - no garbles, dropouts, etc.
On the Treo 800w, the sound appears to be a little on the 'robotic' side, with a bit of distortion (garble/muffle).

As far as speakerphone goes, I'd agree. Nextel devices are meant to be loud. Treo 800w on speaker sounds like the audio itself is over amplified.

As far as GSM goes...I've used GSM, and its pretty good, however has had garble (handoffs). AMR-Full rate on GSM or UMTS sounds better than what I got off of the Treo 800w and off of iDEN.

7 years and counting

I have had sprint for about seven years now...and not really had an issue. I did have one thing about splitting a family plan into two separate sprint plans due to a split with the ex. They stuck me with a two year extension although I really should have fought that. But I had no plans of switching so it was fine. When I did attempt to change my plan a year and change later, they tried to extend me again. I refused and asked for the supervisor. The rep just said, "okay, we'll just not extend you...thanks for being a customer."

I've had good luck and don't yet have a reason to change to someone else. Their support has been good for me...and can speak the english language in clear manner.

Re: 7 years and counting

I am glad to see some positive feedback on Sprint.

I have had my 'Sprint' service back when it was Nextel (1996). There were a few problems at first after the merger, but they were quickly resolved. I rarely call for Customer Service, but when I do it gets resolved. But of course I am a kind, caring person, not a nasty, sarcastic customer. I find that works best. If I ever get a person who has difficulty with the English language I merely ask for someone with whom I can communicate in English.

Another point, my voice-mail answer message is mine; not appended with some lengthy commercial such as is on Verizon.

Deebo

@comcast.net

Things are changing.

I would actually agree, things are changing. Sprint is outsourcing a large portion of its customer service to much more competent and professional associates at Convergys. Its still kind of funny that Sprint now has better support from its outsource call centers than it does and did from actual Sprint employees.

Nevertheless, the last few times I have needed support I actually received what I would genuinely call some of the best cellular support I have had with any company most especially with Sprint. And each of those 3 times I reached a Convergys outsource call-center.

Hopefully Sprint will turn things around. The service and converage area cannot be beaten for the price. I have had everyone quite literally between personal services and those at work, and if Sprint could just manage to have some decent support on a consistent basis I believe they would be one of the best cellular providers.

Not impressed

There was hardly anything to be excited about in the financials. Yeah they beat a couple of expectations, but not by much. The big story here is that, despite all these promises and all the big talk from Dan Hesse, this company is still losing money and subscribers when everybody else in the industry is adding subs. There is something wrong with THIS company, and management appears unable to acknowledge the fact (saying it is one thing, doing something about it is another).

Nextel iDEN is the monkey on their back. CDMA actually grew from 35.4M to 35.5M. Nextel iDEN fell from 13.5M to 12.4M with PowerSource dropping from 1.6M to 1.4M.

Dump iDen

Since Sprint wrote off the value of Nextel merger, they may as well force all iDen customers over to CDMA as soon as they can.

They need to stop selling iDen only phones and only offer CDMA/iDen combo phones. Give it a year or two and then shut down iDen.

Sprint Pluses and Minuses

Sprint Pluses:

1. They have good coverage.

2. My brother-in-law on the other side of Marysville, Ohio was able to get a repeater that uses a rooftop antenna pointed at the nearest cell tower and a local repeater on the top of the fireplace mantle. Solves bad signal in his area.

3. Found out that Sprint eliminated roaming, which means that I no longer need to set my phone for no roaming. This might solve my problem with a hole over by the Marysville KMart.

4. The two Sanyo SCR-2400 phones that I have are very reliable. My primary phone withstood a dunk in a toilet 2 years ago when it slipped out my sweater pocket. You cannot use it as a hockey puck but it has survived falling out of my pocket and onto the ground. A small story as to why I have 2 phones but on the family share plan it saved a lot of primetime minutes when turning off circuit breakers, pulling wires, and so forth. 2 phones on the 550 minute family share plan was less than 1 phone on a 900 minute single phone plan.

5. My contract is coming up this April they are willing to let me downsize to 1 phone and knock $10 off of a single phone plan because I am an established customer.

Sprint Minuses:

6. They have stopped selling nonfancy phones such as the Sanyo SCP-2400. Evidentally, they do not want to sell anything that does a reasonable amount of work for a reasonable price.

Bad business decision given the economy.

7. They only have 1 noncamera flip phone in stock and they are unfortunately not resocking. The problem is that a lot of factories do not allow cameras and they would require me to paint over the camera lense. Come on, most manufactured goods can be reverse engineered and there is no such thing as trade secrets.

8. Their equipment protection plan is not worth the money because it does not pay for batteries and chargers. Those 2 items are the most likely to break or get lost and I can buy batteries and chargers a lot cheaper from an Internet Wh@reh@use than from Sprint - putting the $7 per month into my pocket is better because I can buy a battery for about $15. Since I will have a spare phone that IS the equipment replacement policy.

Sprint

Sprint has been good to me. I have both a sprint and verizon phone, and I live in small town Tennessee. Sprint was the first carrier to have EVDO here by about 4 months, and everywhere I go I get the same or better signal for my sprint phone. I emailed customer service and said I wasn't getting data roaming (before they made arrangements with other carriers, which they now have), and asked for free text messaging to compensate, and they gave it to me no problem.

some beasts should be allowed to silently fade away

I was a loyal sprint business customer years ago, and dumped them after repeated systemic abuses contrary to an agreement we had with sprint.

There problems are of thier own making, they did not seem to care a single bit when we dumped them, as we openly told them we would not come back even if they cleaned up thier act. (once burned always burned!, its an issue of we could never trust them again).

It was only until they are on the ropes we became targets of thier compaign to rebuilt thier customer numbers, of which we simply had to repeatedly respond, "sorry, we cant trust you after our past experiences, you lost us forever as a customer, something you should have been concerned with when we left you as a customer".

Sprint/Nextel should be allowed to simply die to make more room for responsible service providers who actually care about thier customer base.

I love sprint

My EV-DO revA merlin card can get up to 1.7 mbps in the metro detroit area where I live! Down in Indiana where I work i can get about 500k in very very rural areas, and 1300k in the more urban areas.

I have 99 dollar simply everything plan on my sanyo pro 700 bullet proof phone and it works great. I love the navigation system as i can quickly look up anything and call it without directory assistance. I use my tomtom in my car as its screen is large, but i often use the sprint phone to look up addresses as my tomtom doesn't have that many points of interest.

I wish sprint could carry the iPhone, as it is the only phone i can say is good. There are cell phones, and then there is the iPhone, in my opinion nothing else compares. I think the main weakness sprint has is its phones as oppose to its network. Its network is top notch 3G, and they are the first to deploy 4G. I use my mobile broadband card in my car with a cradle-point router (router that works with air cards), then I use my iPod touch to connect to it with wifi. I can get my 1.3-1.7 mbps in the detroit area, while my friends 3G iphone gets only 300-500k. I can use pandora radio in my car with my ipod touch and the sprint internet works great with it.
