DT CFO: There's enough U.S. wireless consolidation already...

Further squashing rumors that Deutsche Telekom is interested in buying Sprint and merging it with T-Mobile (ignoring the resulting technical nightmare), Deutsche Telekom Chief Financial Officer Timotheus Hoettges says there's no need for further consolidation in the U.S. wireless market. "There are four national players in the U.S. market for 300 million households, while in Europe, where we have 350 million households, there are 50-70 operators," says Hoettges, who also addressed T-Mobile 3G coverage gaps. "There is no question that we lost customers because many of our customers couldn't get 3G.," he says. "We now have to make sure that we can capitalize on the network in the top-10 cities where we have invested."

And then you realize
A. GSM/HSDPA doesn't run on IDEN frequencies
B. many angry people with bricked phones will defect to Verizon or ATT in a momentary fit of anger unless you give them all $150 new phone credits, even then they might be attached to their phones

You don't say

This "merger" only made sense to Wall Street cowboys. You know, the same crowd who thought leveraging each dollar to borrow thirty against it was a great idea!

Anyone with half a brain would have told you that 1. it didn't make a lick of technical sense and 2. it was never going to happen.

Also note the part where the T-Mo dude says Europe has 50-70 providers for 350 million people and we have, essentially, 4 for 300 million. Our particular brand of capitalism is killing A. Capitalism B. This Country C. Competition D. All of the above. It's about time we break up these monopolies we've allowed in every industry because it's hurting America.

Very true and it's something, I think, worth being concerned about. Before we make too much of this stat, though, it's worth considering what it actually means. How many choices does the average European household actually have? I doubt all 50+ of these operators are available in all Eurozone countries.

Anyone have any solid data on how many major providers an average household in different European countries have access to? It might only be 4 or 5, much like here (don't forget USA's #5, US Cellular, whose coverage is limited but often strong where others are weak, as in WV).

Golden, CO - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, CricKet
Fredericksburg, TX - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, CricKet, Pocket Communications, Five Star Wireless (local)
Fort Pierce, FL - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, MetroPCS, US Cellular

Of the above non-big-four carriers, two are CDMA (CricKet, Pocket), one is GSM with a CDMA roamer network (Five Star).

A local telephone cooperative in the Fredericksburg area also intends to do something with the 1700MHz spectrum they have. What exactly, they're not sure yet.

I'm thinking that most folks have at least five cellular providers to choose from. Usually the big four plus either CricKet or MetroPCS in urban/suburban areas or a local/regional carrier in rural areas.

The thing is, CricKet (and maybe MetroPCS) run their networks so differently than the top-tier carriers that they aren't good acquisition targets except for each other. There are a double handful of small unlimited carriers out there that CricKet or MetroPCS might eventually buy up, but not if those carriers are GSM. The big four might go ahead and buy a local carrier or two, but probably not. At this point Sprint could buy US Cellular since the company finally has n EvDO Rev. A network, but that's rather unlikely...

Don't break 'em up. Just make sure they have to be dumb pipes. When you've got 80+ million customers there are some economies of scale there.

With T-Mobile's very recent track record a merger with Sprint would be ideal!

Re: Track Record

Because T-Mobile is the one ultimately responsible for their customers' satisfaction which is why it's T-Mobile that is going to pay compensation to those users.

Also T-Mobile was slow in advising subs as to what the problem was and how to mitigate damage including not pulling the battery from the handset.

DT and TMOUSA are definitely in this for the long-haul

Deutsche Telekom’s current focus in the U.S. is on expanding its so-called third-generation, high-speed network. The company, Europe’s largest phone company, was slow to start building its third-generation offerings in the U.S. This year, it invested $3.5 billion euros in the network.

“There is no question that we lost customers because many of our customers couldn’t get 3G.,” Hoettges said. “We now have to make sure that we can capitalize on the network in the top-10 cities where we have invested.”

The market for mobile data is booming in the U.S. and “we have to participate in that boom,” Hoettges said.
It's looking more and more likely to me that TMO will be making some massive changes for 2010 on. No more sitting idly in the corner stroking themselves!

Maybe T-Mobile will soon be able to advertise having the "fastest 3G network in the country"!

Nah, I bet AT&T has that and "The Nations Fastest 3G Network" trademarked.

While that is certainly good for t-mo, the bad thing for them is that the top 3 carriers aren't exactly going to go to their respective corners and start standing pat either.

It sounds like he's saying they're only going to have 3G networks in 10 cities?

Where do you read 10 cities?

10 cities go 3G live every week.

"top 10" means there's more than 10.

Top 10 probably = NY, LA, Chicago, SF, Miami, somewhere in TX, WDC, etc.
