Sprint Tags Nokia For Texas WiMax Putting the parts together for a 2008 launch Nokia today announced that Sprint has picked Nokia to deploy its WiMAX network in four Texas markets, including Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio. Last month, Sprint announced that Samsung was its WiMax partner for the DC and Baltimore markets. When Sprint launches the WiMax network in 2008, they've said they'll offer 2-4Mbps for an estimated $55 and will embrace an open access model (no nickel and diming you to death to connect multiple devices). The company hopes to offer the service to some 100 million people by the end of '08.

This is unfortunate, because though economically sound, it is not reaching those areas where Wimax can have the most impact - areas where broadband options are scarcer. Not really. By the time WiMAX is widespread, it's not going to be a Cable/DSL replacement, it's going to likely wind up being an EVDO/HSPDA replacement. Lower price, lower latency, cheaper to deploy and the biggest reason ... it'll be integrated into pretty much every Intel laptop chipset.
So it makes perfect sense for Sprint to deploy it in the markets where they will recoup their investment the quickest.

Valencia, CA | WiMax will be an EVDO/HSDPA replacement when it is ready to do the following:
1. Become mobile WiMax (i.e. perform handoffs between WiMax sites)
2. Interoperate with EVDO/HSDPA/WiFi for handoffs (WiMax is more sparce than HSDPA, and doesn't handoff to anything currently)
3. Build true mobile handsets.
I do agree that Sprint should be 'picking the low hanging fruit' where they can get the biggest bang for the buck.
I would personally only use a service like this if I new that the areas I needed to use it were completely covered, and WiMax had failover to 1x/EVDO or EDGE/HSDPA where there wasn't coverage. For $55/month, I don't think I'm asking too much. | |

Miami, FL | Line of sight equipment can be created and installed in locations more than 8 miles away using a highly sensitive antenna.
This was proven with just WiFi and the same could be done for WiMAX. That means (as long as I am able to get that signal) I shall be alright.
Unlike a physical connection which is a very strict limit and even if you ran your own pair you still required more and more equipment.

But I guess that's how things work, not much profit to be made out here in the boonies. At least I got EVDO coverage  | |
