Sprint To Offer HTC Hero October 11
$180, after rebates, with two year contract
by Karl Bode Thursday 03-Sep-2009 tags: business · wireless
Sprint this morning announced that they'll be offering the new Android-powered HTC Hero starting on October 11. According to a statement, the device will cost $179.99 -- after a $50 instant savings and a $100 mail-in rebate. That price point, of course, also requires a two-year service agreement. Photos over at CNET suggest that the device got a bit of a brushed-metal facelift from its overseas counterpart (a smaller chin, too). The core device remains the same, with a 3.2-inch multitouch screen, microSD slot, 5 megapixel camera and Sense UI. Consumers have said Sprint's customer service issues are on the mend, and now in conjunction with the Pre, the carrier is pushing two of the biggest competitors to the iPhone. Is a turnaround in the cards?

Great device with good price, good alternative to iPhone. And can't say that processor is slow.

I agree. $20 more buys you a Pre with a nice OMAP3 (probably better than a 3GS). Android is more than capable of running on the Pre. Just give it some time.

The only drawback with the Pre is the lack of SD card. Android heavily relies on the SD card. The best way to solve this, IMO, is to add another partition to act as the SD card. Android will still think an SD card is present even though it's not.

Of course it won't work on SERO. They want to get people off that plan so they can make money.

It's a standard-grade smartphone. It by all accounts *should* work on SERO.

I'm tempted, but I also want a keyboard.

My brother has SERO and they won't let him change to the PRE. So why would they let him go with a newer phone than the PRE?

Sprint is trying to kill off all of the old SERO accounts because they don't make any money on them.

The Pre and Instinct series are exceptions to the rule. Granted, ANdroid phones could be as well, however all new WinMo phones can get SERO.

if it's anything like the rest of their latest releases.. then yea.. you're going to need an "everything plan"..

The EPs were put in place to somewhat match what the other carriers are doing.. and more. If you think about it, Sprint has less billing headaches with people calling in for overages and "questionable items" that showed up on their bill after the user "forgot" or "didn't know" that what they were doing was going to be a charged item.

Look at the different pricing and billing models out there.. You have ATT/Verizon which nickle and dime you for everything you do.. and then you have MetroPCS/Boost & others.. ATT/VZ charges you for everything which also generates a higher call volume into the call centers every month. The Boosts, MetroPCSs, and others that are flat rate carriers have virtually no customer service needs for billing... then you have Sprint which is trying to simplify everything with your "minutes" and then "everything else" (text, two-way, web, etc.) - Sprints method lets you still have a real service as far as minute plans AND lets you have all the rest.

To be honest, and all seriousness, if anyone wants to scrimp and pay a high dollar amount for a phone, work hard to not use it to not run up a bill, then ATT/VZ is a good call.. for those that want to have a realistic priced and billed service, it sounds like Sprint has it covered.

... and yes, I'm speaking DIRECTLY to the cheap-skates here that want a cell phone for $30 a month or cheap as possible while having all the goodies like the rest of us; the ones that actually pay to keep the networks up and running.

Yep

quote:
HTC Hero requires activation on a pricing plan offering unlimited data. Sprint’s Simply EverythingSM plan provides unlimited nationwide calling, texting, e-mail, social networking, Web browsing, GPS navigation, Sprint TV, streaming music, NFL Mobile Live, NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile and much more for only $99.99 per month. That’s a savings of $1,200 over two years vs. a comparable AT&T iPhone® plan2. Sprint Everything Data plans with unlimited messaging and data start at just $69.99 for 450 minutes with unlimited night and weekend calling starting at 7 p.m. (All price plans exclude Sprint surcharges and taxes.)

Re: Great news

no where does it say it will require an sprint everything plan, it specifically says a plan offering unlimited data(which my sero plan has) and then goes on to describe the simply everything plan, at the release of the pre it specifically said it will require an everytrhing plan. just me hoping, i really want this phone.

And the processor isn't THAT MUCH slower. It is 528 mhz vs 600 mhz on the Pre and iPhone. Though with WebOS on the Pre and strong multitasking the Pre might have an advantage.

Does anyone know if Android is a true multitasking OS that can alert user while application is in the bgrd?

Yes, it is. T-Mobile is the only company that sells Android phones in the US currently and I use their MyTouch3G - multi-tasks just fine.

The processor on the hero is not only slower but it have a older processor. That why you can't look at just the mhz. The processor on the Pre can do more work per cycle then the hero. This is the major reason that the hardware of the Pre is alot better then the Android handset.

As for me

I chose the Palm Pre. So far, for it being my very first Cell phone, I am very pleased. The connection is always strong, the surfing is pretty fast. I think it is using Evdo. Not sure. They just introduced NFL live onto the device. I set up my faves.

Interesting

I'd consider leaving the iPhone and AT&T when my contract is up for this.

Cost wise Sprint you save way more money vs AT&T or Verizon. Coverage will be the next thing I will need to look at.

The benefit of sprint is, if you're outside of their coverage it roams on Verizon, which should get you most anywhere.

So, Verizon coverage at Sprint prices.

That's good. My hesitation goes back about 3 years ago when I tried Verizon out. Worked great where I live. I travel during the winter to Northern WI and MI and the data just didn't exist in those areas compared to AT&T. With VZW buying Alltel I don't know if that has really changed.

SERO

Sero is not going anywhere, the plan is still offered and their other plans include unlimited everything except minutes. I have been using MyTether with the Pre and have gone over 10gb getting an average 160 kb/s download on bit torrent paired with an MSI Wind U100 running Ubuntu.

Though the hero looks like it will be the hottest phone yet and I got the Pre when it came out, now I want the Hero, when will this end?

Sorry, but I respectfully call BS this too. People have tried time and again to provision the Pre and the Instinct(s) on SERO through Sprint but to the best of my knowledge, no one has been successful. The message boards at Sprinterusers.com are filled with disappointed posts about being unable to make it happen thanks to safeguards Sprint put in place in their billing system which reject Pre and Instinct ESN's.

Just so we're on the same page, you're saying that you've got a Pre on either a $30 500 minute / unlimited everything else SERO plan (what I currently have myself) or the $50 1200 minute / unlimited everything else SERO plan, right?

Huh, I thought SERO was the 99 dollar everything limited plan, this is what I had for a year or two, I got a pre on that (I get a government discount because of work so it comes out to be like $95 after taxes) since getting my pre my brother and I got a family 2 line plan with 1700 minutes I think, and unlimited everything plan.

No worries, I figured that's what you meant. The SERO (Sprint Employee Referral Offer) plan required a Sprint employee's information in order to sign up. It's truly the best value for the money in the US cell market at the moment. Unfortunately they stopped signing up new SERO subscribers last year. My own SERO contract expires in a couple days and the pressure is on to "upgrade" to a more expensive "Everything Data" plan which includes less minutes just so I can get the newer phones, but I'm going to remain strong and stick with SERO compatible phones until something completely mind blowing comes along.

For what it's worth, I did try the Pre out after opening an additional Everything plan temporarily and thought it was a terrific phone but it failed to lure me away from the huge savings I get with my SERO plan. If the Pre were SERO compatible, I'd happily fork over $500+ for it.

When will this end.

Never. That is the nature of the beast. I am waiting for the Pre to work with the Good messaging system before I pick one up. I wish Good would move on this. I have not looked at the Hero...I think I will do that now, maybe I will change my mind.

I know, just venting my frustration. I was so happy with the Centro for years, I was extatic after getting the Pre and I just watched the HTC Hero demo, and that thing looks sweet.

Though to be honest it has the same features as the pre, and I like a physical keyboard, which is really why I went with the Pre.

The beast though seems to be accelerating with a remarkable rate.

Just work the discounts...

Google is your friend...

I lost the SERO however was able to get the 450min Blackberry SEP down to $52/mo then added pick 5.

Find a corp discount and work it with Sprint, a little social engineering and you can get your Hero.

Palm Pre Reigns Supreme

Just got a Pre a few weeks ago and I love the thing. The physical keyboard is great, especially when you get use to it. Sure I hacked it and got the virtual keyboard, but I have no reason to use it. Mainly just to impress people.

Multi-tasking kicks butt. And cost wise, Sprint owns all.

My plan: 950 minutes, unlimited data & text: $70.

As a 9 year customer, I threatened to leave if they couldn't switch me to an employee referral plan. But it was too much of a headache to do. So they toss me 500 extra minutes a month.

To the person using MyTether, msg me. I need to know how you got it to work. And do I really need to make a donation to the guy to get it to work properly?

T-Mobile failure

Must say, Sprint is getting some nice phones and tmo just begins to suck. I visited their store and they have nothing. mytouch is the same as G1 and lacks keyboard, hardly an upgrade. Instead of embracing Android headsets, Sprint will take over now tested OS platform.
