Sprint Unveils First LTE Launch Devices, Including Galaxy Nexus
Available Sometime in the Second Half of 2012
by Karl Bode Tuesday 10-Jan-2012 tags: business · wireless · hardware · bandwidth · wireless
Sprint last week announced that they'll be launching ten initial LTE cities (including Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio) sometime before the first half of this year, though LTE handsets won't show up until later this year. Confirming some premature advertisements, Sprint at CES this week confirmed that one of the first LTE smartphones they'll offer users will be the Google Samsung Galaxy Nexus, in addition to the LG Viper smartphone and a Sierra Wireless mobile hotspot that will support the company's EVDO, LTE and Mobile WiMax networks. Sprint didn't give launch dates or pricing for any of the new devices, but says they plan to offer 15 LTE-capable devices before the end of 2012.

The Galaxy Nexus

could of been a great release but the Verizon exclusive really jacked it up. It would be nice to have the phone on Sprint but 16gig version and like 4-6 months after the phone has been available.

Phone tech moves fast enough and not being able to get the latest and greatest phone 6 month after its been available seems unacceptable to me..

Maybe I'm the minority but if I'm signing a 2 year contract I want the latest available right now..Not some 6 month old phone.

Re: The Galaxy Nexus

The Sprint version of this phone will have a faster processor from what I understand.

And it will also support Google Wallet with NFC unlike Verizon, who turned off that feature to flack it's own developing ISIS payment system.

All the Galaxy Nexus have a 1.5 processor but are underclocked to 1.2..My guess is its a typo and the Sprint will be the same.

Will be outdated by the time Sprint carries it

Every 3 months a new hot phone appears. Is fine that Sprint will carry this for those who want a Google branded phone but Sprint will likely have a hotter Android phone by the time Nexus comes out.

HTC needs a strong comeback phone. LG looks like it will be a contender with high end phones.

So what?

okay Sprint has plans for LTE just like they had plans for 4G. I've had 3 EVO 4G phones for two years now and yet to see 4G in my area.I don't live in some rural community where one could expect but in the (SF Bay area). I'm lucky to get decent 3g. The saving grace is that I've never had a dropped call and Sprint coverage is excellent just not as fast as Verizon. LTE will be just another one of those marketing ploys to get you to re-up or spend more money. I'll wait till they can actually deliver then "maybe" consider a new LTE capable phone

Re: So what?

Not to nitpick, but the EVO has ony been out for 1.5 years. Not the 2 that you suggest. That said, with the shape that Clear has been in they havent really been in a position to continue the roll out of WiMax and if memory serves me correct, the last new area they rolled out to was around the beginning of 2011. So your best bet is to hope that you end up with LTE when they roll that out. Since everyone else is going to LTE, and Sprint now heading in that direction, its more a matter of when, not if.

As far as waiting goes, if you already have an Evo, the only extra cost to upgrading to an LTE capable phone is going to be the initial cost of the handset. The sooner you pick one up, the sooner you'll be eligible for another upgrade. In the long run, its all going to come down to how much you like that Evo and if you think you can hang on to it for another year or two.

Re: So what?

I'm definately not giving up my EVO 4G until i see something new anounced. And I'm very confident we will see another new "superphone" from HTC this summer that will be LTE enabled.

This is assuming I don't jump to a windows phone becuase that new Lumia 900 looks great!

I stand corrected - so its been 18 months give or take and I'm still not getting any "4G" and have paid over 50.00 for premium service that the EVO was to have delivered. Despite this issue I like the phone, it makes/receives calls and does some other things fairly decently but I'm not going to go out and commit to another contract for another phone which does not have the infrastructure to back it up like I did for the EVO. Sprint will have to put their money where their marketing mouth is before I take the plunge
