Sprint Unveils LTE Launch Cities
Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio
by Karl Bode Thursday 05-Jan-2012 tags: business · wireless · wireless
Speaking at the Citi Entertainment, Media & Telecommunications conference today, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse unveiled that the company will be offering their new LTE service first in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and six other smaller markets by mid-2012. According to comments made during the webcast event, Hesse stated that a total of ten markets will see service sometime before "midsummer."

While the launch will likely be accompanied by a USB modem or two, Sprint isn't expected to launch LTE-capable handsets until later in the year (a leaked ad on CNET this week suggests the first device could be the Galaxy Nexus).

Sprint laid out their plan to deploy LTE back in October, noting they hoped to cover 123 million "pops" (potential users) with LTE by the end of 2012, and 250 million by the end of 2013. The company is conducting a $4-$5 billion network upgrade that involves retrofitting every Sprint cell site, eliminating the refrigerator-sized cabinets for each technology (800 MHz, 1.9 GHz and 2.5 GHz) in favor of small, more energy efficient multi-mode base stations allowing them to offer Mobile WiMax and LTE for the foreseeable future.

Sprint will obviously need spectrum for this new network, and with LightSquared currently bogged down in GPS interference political hell, Sprint says they'll need to re-purpose spectrum in the 800 MHz band for LTE after the company shutters their Nextel iDEN service sometime in 2013. Still, Hesse insists the company has enough spectrum to see them through 2014 -- or 2016 if you conclude the spectrum sharing deals with Clearwire.

Which Spectrum

So I assume the initial LTE release will be in 1900Mhz spectrum. They probably can't use 800Mhz until getting rid of iDen, or will they use a portion of 800? It doesn't look like LightSquared will get anywhere.

I wonder if the devices being sold this year will just do 1900Mhz or will be ready for 800Mhz and 2.5Ghz when Clear starts rolling out LTE.

Re: Which Spectrum

Yeah they are only deploying LTE on 1900 Mhz right now. FDD-LTE, in 5x5 configuration in the PCS G-Block. This should basically be half the theoretical speed of what Verizon offers. The goal is to enable a 5x5 carrier in the 800 Mhz block, and use aggregation which is supported by LTE-Advanced to create a 10x10 LTE carrier in the future. So I wouldn't expect to see much in the 800 Mhz band until LTE-Advanced becomes a real standard. I guess they are currently deploying voice in the 800 Mhz spectrum now though.

The Sprint ad lisst a 1.5 GHz processor for the Galaxy Nexus. The Verizon version has a 1.2 GHz processor. The million dollar question- is it a typo or will it have a more powerful processor?

I think by now every knows sprint offers "unlimited" data because no matter were you connect on there network the speed is going to be terrible.God forbid they spend some money running extra fiber to there towers

I recently switched to Sprint and am quite pleased. My 4G speds are a very consistent 8-12mb down and 1.5-4mb up. 3G isn't too shabby either.

I am still deciding about going to sprint, but I want them to release the 800mhz band in my area before I switch. I want to actually be inside this winter and able to talk on the phone, not be outside like a cigeratte smoker.

Upload is locked at 1.5 mbps with Sprint's 4G. You should not be seeing upload results of 4 mbps, ever.

Sprint corrects their CEO's statement - he meant only the prepaid svcs & not the postpaid Sprint.
»news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-573534···1_3-0-20

Sprint executive Bill White denied this was the case. Sprint's businesses include its prepaid arms Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile, both of which do practice throttling, and Hesse was referring to those customers.

"We don't throttle our unlimited postpaid customers," White said. "He is not referring to postpaid."

Something they should clarify in their ads.

Sprint Unveils LTE Launch Cities

So cities that already had WIMAX are getting LTE? Meanwhile all the cities that already got skipped over for WIMAX get left in the cold.

Oklahoma City metro area has 1.2 million people and we get nothing. When Verizon LTE here is getting 10Mbit up and down along with AT&T's 4g just rolling in you would think Sprint would make this area priority.

Well done Sprint...

Tell me about it. The Detroit metro area has over 4.2 million people, and we only get 3G, yet Grand Rapids gets 4G when they have less than 800,000 people. I did did the speedtest on my Evo 4G today, and I was getting about 150-200kbps download. :-( I was really hopping Detroit would be on the LTE roll out for 2012.

Re: Sprint Unveils LTE Launch Cities

boo hoo.

There are a lot of factors other than just population when choosing an upgrade site (land area for one). If you want a real rolled out LTE network, go to Verizon and let the best network win. Maybe if Sprint didn't waste time building a half-assed WiMax network their LTE deployment would be similar to Verizon's by now. It looks like AT&T is playing catch up now as well.

We won't ever get Wimax 4G, but I'd expect 3G speeds to improve and become more reliable when LTE roles out because of the backhaul capacity upgrades to the cell phone towers that are needed to support LTE's faster speeds. If Sprint wanted to go and install a few markets, make some mistakes and learn their lessons before they rolled it out here for me, I wouldn't mind.

I think they did learn their lesson and luckily they didn't try to stick with WiMax any longer. I just feel bad for all of the people with WiMax phones who live in poor WiMax coverage areas knowing that they will never get better coverage.
