Instinct gets all for starting at $69.99. I have Verizon personally so I know things aren't the cheapest, but I get what I pay for and no complaints. Dare I got recently has worked out well also. | |

A friend lives near there and doesn't have a problem. But they do have 13,000+ employees/users in a couple block area. Would be difficult to manage. The other carriers that have that many in one place would likely have the problem too.

| | | | The iPhone is a status symbol, and a hot one right now. Similar to the PS3 a couple of Christmases ago. We all saw people paying 2x to 3x retail price for those things on Ebay.
I know here in Canada, a lot of people switched from Bell Mobility to Rogers just so they could run an unlocked iPhone (EBay for $600US - $800US) or a look alike. Never mind that at the time, the iPhone wasn't fully supported, and some of the features didn't work right over here, they were just happy enough to have the overpriced thing hanging from their hip.
By having a iClone in their official lineup, they can head off some of the migration. At least until, Apple decides whether to introduce a CDMA version of the iPhone. | |

In order to just that "Affiliate" to put EVDO on their towers was a mission, and even if they did according to reports they did a terrible job at it.

I bought two Instinct phones last week purely because AT&T's plans are outrageous! iPhone 3G is a little better but a lot more expensive due to much higher AT&T monthly fees. However, Sprint Instinct even beats iPhone in some aspects!
Here are Sprint's plans for Instinct:
- $69.99 for single line includes 450 minutes for talk time and unlimited turn-by-turn GPS navigation (with text to speech Street names, traffic alerts and re-routing), unlimited streaming TV and radio channels, web access and UNLIMITED TEXT messaging!
- $129.99 for 2 lines with 1500 talk time and same features as above.
On the other hand, the cheapest equivalent iPhone 3G plans will cost:
- $69.99 + $20 (for unlimited text messaging) = $89.99 per month for 450 minutes of voice, unlimited text messaging and data. There is no FREE unlimited text messaging included. iPhone doesn't have live TV channels! The GPS navigation will probably not be like the real Telenav GPS on Sprint Instinct which even announces the names of streets like high-end car GPS units. iPhone will probably not have camcorder included while Instinct does.
- $89.99 (1400 shared minutes) + $60 ($30 x 2 for data) + $40 ($20 x 2 for unlimited text messaging) = $189.99 for 2 lines ????
NOTE:
* iPhone 3G plan rates are based on pre-release information. Actuals might change if AT&T decide to compete with Sprint!
* Even if AT&T decides to include UNLIMITED text messaging in the $30 per month data plan, Sprint's 1500 minute plan for 2 lines is cheaper!
* The $99 plan for Sprint Instinct that you mention is for "unlimited" TALK-TIME and is still cheaper than equivalent plan from AT&T and Verizon because it includes extras that others charge for!

I am sure that most would agree that this phone linked to network problem has got to go. I know when I have to upgraded my phone in the next couple of years, I am going to have to purchase it out right because all of the phones that AT&T is providing are crappy and most are dumbed down to the point they do not work correctly.

| | Not keyboard... Just like the iPhone, it is a nice, feature packed device, but without a physical keyboard, not something I would buy. A keyboard with physical buttons is an absolute must for typing an email without having to stare at the screen.
If it slid open to reveal a keyboard, I'd seriously consider it since I'm in the market for a new phone. And in this area, Sprint (as well as the other CDMA carriers) has excellent coverage and clearer voice quality than ATT for some reason. Guess I'll be getting a Mogul.

It is a great little device, and I wouldn't mind having one if I had Sprint. Internet speeds are obviously much faster than the current EDGE iPhones, and it looks like a pretty decent phone.

| I have a macbook pro 17" and an iphone (which used to be my blackberry before I swaped the sim). I also have a Sprint Mogul.
I have to be honest with you... the iphone is a neat toy... 'cuz it's really an ipod. Now... the mogul ugly, weird and slow, it's a mobile power house. When I'm on the road I tether and consistently I get better than basic DSL speeds. Average of 1,300 down and 600 up.

The big question around Sprint is the iPhone. If the 3G iPhone is a huge hit, as all media sources are assuming (the "conspiracy" the VZ CEO was talking about), then all the non-at&t wireless carriers are going to be under some big pressure. Even though Sprint PCS isn't suffering the same way as Nextel is, they're lagging behind the rest of the "big boys", and so have the most to lose.
Sprint won't disappear overnight, though, that's for sure. At this point though one wonders if they're going to become an easy target for some overseas carrier (while the US market is slowing, it's still a growth market compared to Europe or Japan, for example)... but if that was going to happen, why hasn't it already? My guess is CDMA- if Sprint was a GSM carrier they'd likely be long gone. | |

Valencia, CA | I've had issues with my Blackberry 7100i during the past week, where Sprint's iDEN (read Nextel) network 'dropped' the data connection on my phone. It went from 'NXTL' to 'NXTl', and no messages would come through. Since this is technically used as a glorified pager, I didn't get pages for quite some time  and once noticed, I had to go and reset the radio.

I just went to get another and every store is sold out of the Instinct, so their claims of record sales of this phone ring true here (no pun intended).

(Thus, a $129 price tag) It was inevitable that regular phones blurred the line between media phone & smart phone. Sprint is an incredibly difficult company to deal with when it comes to customer service. They are VERY ARROGANT when it comes to billing disputes in the sense that they can do no wrong and refuse to prorate any charges when canceling an account (in or out of a contract). Know this now before taking the subscription plunge!!! They will also NOT HESITATE TAKING YOUR ACCOUNT TO COLLECTIONS IF YOU REFUSE TO PAY THEM AS WELL EVEN IF YOU DISPUTE THE BILL. The company is in the unfortunate position of losing more customers than they gain quarter over quarter. This phone brings nothing to the table to change that. To be honest, Verizon & AT&T offer similar phones at similar prices that don't have an Apple logo.
For now, the only reason I'd keep a cell phone would be for emergency/911 capability. The simple fact is most smart phones cripple WIFI (or don't have the feature) precisely because they don't want the device to be used as a VOIP capable phone.. what incentive would there be for customers to subscribe to cell service if they could just attach to a wifi spot & talk for next to nothing.
Think about it... $3-25 per month with voip versus $55-200 a month for cell phone minute/unlimited plans. | |

Albany, NY | my take Sprint has fantastic coverage and 3G in my forgotten part of the US. ATT is horrible and only the insane would get TMobile, as they are just crap. VZ is great as well but they are far more expensive.
The Sanyo Katana was possibly one of the best phones I have ever owned.
I use a Palm Centro now, and while palm may lack the "cool" factor, their os is old but solid. I run a lot of inhouse software on it. It works with all of our computers, and it replaced the need for having a blackberry and a phone.
Sprint does great in the places I spend most of my time in.
The only thing ATT has is that it will work in remote areas of northern NY, where there is no other provider. In the cities ATT is with TMobile as the worst.
It varies so much person to person that it all this pecker measuring about networks and phones comes down to what is best for the particular user.
Palm is great because it is easy to code for and stable enough for the field. WM6 crashes a lot more so we switched many of our GIS applications to Palm. They need a better browser...

| | | Re: my take I think there are people who just want to bash Sprint based on a past experience. Sprint added CDMA to 4000 Nextel sites and went from 255m pop coverage to 262m today. The network is pretty solid now and they have better roaming agreements than any carrier.
My brother has a Sprint phone in NYC (Brooklyn) and broke then antenna off - still no problems. And he train travels to Philly/DC/Boston often.
The network is a non-issue, it's the customer support that still needs improvement. | |
