Sprint's Wireless Network Apparently Not 'Most Dependable' At least according to the National Advertising Division Tipped by Jon 
The National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureau has recommended that Sprint stop running ads saying that the carrier has "America's most dependable 3G network." The recommendation comes after Verizon, fresh off of their lover's quarrel with AT&T, filed a complaint with the agency claiming that Sprint was using old data to support their claim. According to a NAD statement, Nielsen "drive test" data does confirm that Verizon's network has been more reliable of late: Verizon Wireless had a lower connection failure rate and a lower task failure rate than Sprint and performed better in terms of session reliability. NAD determined that Verizon's superiority on those measures - according to the most recent Nielsen drive tests - undermined Sprint's "most dependable" claim as to outdoor usage...Following its review of the evidence, NAD determined that the advertiser lacked sufficient support for its claim to be "America's most dependable 3G network." Sprint, which used both old and new Nielsen data to draw their conclusion, says they'll appeal the ruling. As we recently noted when discussing how ISPs have taken heat from NAD for advertising coax or DSL networks as "fiber," the NAD debate process often lacks "teeth," given the entire process is voluntary. ISPs can (and often do) simply ignore NAD's recommendations. NAD then forwards the complaint on to the FTC, which often subsequently ignores the advertising feud unless the claims made are particularly ridiculous (using Sprint's network results in large goiters!).

Sprint Nextel, in its advertiser’s statement, said the company respectfully disagrees with NAD’s findings and “maintains that its dependability claim is fully substantiated based on the results of the connection success and session reliability tests, together with results of the signal strength tests.”
The company said it will appeal NAD’s decision to the National Advertising Review Board. I think Sprint made a SMALL valid point. The results were based only on 1 test and the latest test. To halt an in-progress ad campaign based on only the last test is problematic.

Valencia, CA | Its holiday sales season... Carriers are out for your money during that all important holiday shopping season.
They'll take a little gamble on ending up in court, if it gets them enough good paying subscribers on a 2 year contract, AND, more importantly, since the market is nearing saturation, poaches them from a competitor.

Albany, NY | Sprint IS the most dependable thanks to VZ. Sprint has free roaming including data, so if I am not on Sprint I am on VZ. Sprint has the benefit of two networks. So yeah, technically they are the most dependable.
Their own Sprint only network, is probably not as intense as VZ, but in my area they are great, and Sprint's data cannot be beat. I have a consistent 1.5/500 connection tethered to the pre.
For the price and phone selection, Sprint can't be beat. Samsung moment is on the way, Hero, Pixi, HTC, Pre, BB, etc... and none are locked down with crap software.
Right now Sprint has not only the most dependable network, but also the most friendly to computer geeks like myself.
They have time and time gone out of their way in effort to up their customer service, and their practical approach to problems have made it a great carrier. They are expected to be out of the red quite soon, Dan Hesse has been doing well.
They are far from perfect but they seem to be the only company interested in building out, getting phones, and trying to do something for customers.
In the light of ATT and VZ, they look fantastic. (TMobile is not really a player on mch of the east coast).

Sprint here in the Los Angeles area is very good, however, lately (past 2 weeks), I've been noticing my PDA go back and forth between 1x and EVDO quite a bit, and I'm less that 1/4 mile from the cell site with full signal. This has happened in other areas here in L.A. as well.

| Twice as many towers .. it takes for Sprint at 1900 MHz vs Verizon at 800 MHz. But, Sprint hands-down has the best 3g coverage in my area.
Yeah, I agree with their ad. They are indeed the most reliable for me.

Sprint has been good for me..some of the states like in the north part of the country like wy. have no sprint presents. but roams great. Co-works with the others carrriers constantly complain about their service. I just don't understand why alot of people hate on Sprint! I heard I've seen alot of of stories on dslreports about customer service back in the day saying that they sucked. For me and my family and friends no problems. | | | Sprint rocks... 10+ year customer here. Just recently upgraded family to smartphones and their service as always in my area is excellent.
Also don't forget that Sprint & Verizon are roaming "partners", they share networks. Meaning when Verizon does a map and includes roaming 3g they have Sprint in the mix. That makes their coverage look absolutely awesome. | |

Unless, they want to be forced to mention that their ETF for smartphones is twice as much, most of their phones are locked down in firmware compared to their competitors' phones, and their unlimited service isn't unlimited - AND tethering costs $30/mo more.

| The Phone Is Everything I don't care what carrier you use. NO carrier has complete coverage in every area of the United States. Some phone are not only better than others, they are much better than others. .
The difference between coverage depends upon the phone. I had T-Mobile that was awesome in California but not in IL. US Cellular blankets IL, but it isn't worth two hoops or the money in rural Illinois. It wasn't too good in isolated areas in Missouri either.
AT&T didn't work in an AT&T area outside their office in a major Illinois community.
I had the same problem with Sprint with a Katanya phone. When I changed to a Samsung phone, I lost the problem forever. .
I've had Sprint for 5 years now with little trouble and terrific phone support. What happens next, remains to be seen.
