Yes, but where can you get a double moca-latte with creame and sprinkles? And, you can only do so much with free wi-fi anyway. No, I don't know what the sell since I hate coffee. Juan Valdez said, "WHAT?" Gee, just stay at a Holiday Express. They have free wi-fi, coffee, and a breakfast bar. How do I know? My plane was 4 hours late (American Airlines) and, supposedly, Marriott lost my reservation. However, it was strange my luggage was there in a Fedex box.

Yes, but where can you get a double moca-latte with creame and sprinkles? For the cheap price of $5. We are in a recession, luxury things like getting starbucks coffee are one of the first things out the door when your rent has been increased, summer fuel prices that will no doubt break the $5 barrier by september, and employers being very stingy with raises. Although on the other hand.... I guess you can save quite a bit of money if you throw your own internet out the door. Friend of mine lives across the street from a place that offers free wifi. He ditched his DSL about a year ago and is still using theirs..... Hey, it says "FREE WIFI" in big letters on the window. :P

Re: Free for $5For me I still have to pay. Some days I spend more that 2 hours online, so I'm sticking with my T-Mobile Hotspot membership. I can still roam at Starbucks, and use it at Hyatt hotels, Borders, FedEx Kinkos and clubs of many airlines at their airports.

Yes I too found it so ironic that FREE and paying $5 were oxymorons... I would have thought FREE would mean, buy some coffee and get free wifi. But nooooooo, you buy a card and fill it with 5 buck and then use it once a month.
F%$& Off Starbucks for being so lame.

OK, your faithful GEEK reporter is sitting here in a Starbucks armed with: 1. My wireless air card issued by my company 2. Laptop 3. Starbucks Card Now that I have established that...... I plugged in my wireless card so I could access the Internet to immediately register my new card and sign up for an AT&T free account. I used the card today because the requirement is that you use it once in a 30 day period. For that use, you get 2 hours free surfing a day which is a good deal because I am always near a Starbucks (who Isn't) and there are times when I do NOT want to use my company provided air card. Plus, I don't always have it with me so this account is useful IMHO. So I went to the web site and registered my card (took no time at all), then there was a link to sign up for AT&T access. I clicked the link and was directed to a page to fill in some pertinent info such as a username and password for use on the AT&T network. Did that. This all took no longer than 10 minutes total. I am now surfing the net using AT&T in my local Starbucks. Just thought the readers would like to know how easy the setup really was. * You must register a card that has been used within the past 30 days for it to work Received the following e-mail asking me to confirm my identity: Dear Starbucks Card Member
Thank you for becoming an AT&T Wi-Fi member! Please click on the following link to complete your registration.
(LINK REMOVED FOR OBVIOUS REASONS)
As a new subscriber we have included some helpful tips to get you started.
* Your AT&T Wi-Fi account will get you online at any company-operated Starbucks location equipped with a hot spot. To keep it active, make a purchase or reload funds on your Starbucks Card within 30 days of the day you login. * Your AT&T Wi-Fi username is XXXXXXX * To connect in a store, follow these steps: 1. Select "attwifi" from the list of available wireless networks 2. Open a browser 3. On the AT&T Login page, enter your Username, select "AT&T WiFi" from the drop down box, and enter your Password * Find a Starbucks location here. * To find helpful contact numbers for assistance, visit www.attwifi.com.
Starbucks welcomes you to Starbucks Card Rewards - visit Starbucks.com/card anytime to reload your Card and manage your account.
Again, thank you for choosing AT&T Wi-Fi service!
We look forward to serving all of your high-speed wireless needs.
Sincerely, AT&T Internet Services

Re: My "Registration Experience"I use a Palm TX and have been unable to access the AT&T "free" service at more than one local Starbucks in N. VA. I have registered with AT&T and they have sent me an e-mail confirming that I should be good to go at Starbucks.
However, in Starbucks, I input my user name and password, select AT&T wi-fi, accept the terms of service and hit continue (or whatever the icon is called). I then am taken to a t-mobile page with a message that either my username or password is incorrect (which they are not). Has anyone been able to get a TX to access AT&T at Starbucks?
Thanks.

Re: My "Registration Experience"James,
You have to make sure that your TX's wireless card is connected to the "attwifi" wireless network before you access the logon page. It looks like you were inadvertently connected to the "tmobile" wireless network when you tried logging in. There should be a way to access your TX's wireless-network settings, but I'm not familiar with the TX. Sometimes the logon credentials can be stored in your wireless settings. RTM.

Re: My "Registration Experience"I have called Starbucks and AT&T and get the phone mery go round from AT&T. Nobody I have talked to can help with the logon problem. I was connected to the AT&T wireless router at the Starbucks store. Since I never received a confirmation email I will get ANOTHER Starbucks card and create a new Starbucks account to see if the FUBAR goes away.

Re: My "Registration Experience"Here is an update. I can log on to the AT&T site from home using the user ID and password I piked when setting up the free AT&T account so I know the user ID and password are correct. The next time I go to Starbucks I will asked for the manager to see if they have a clue to what's going on. I will also take my laptop with me to see if it works. The previous time I used my PocketPC. It has worked just fine at other free WIFI spots in the past though.

I have the exact same experience and have been around many times between the ATT and Starbucks support, no one can figure it out, or they just have not devoted any time to figuring it out, after more than a week still no luck. The only place I have been able to login using the TX is from Barnes&Nobles. Whatever the issue, it appears to be between ATTWiFi and T-Mobile.
BTW I"ve been looking at this thread and it's curious to me that you ask a legit question in a tech forum and get back all this rant about coffee. What's up with that?

Someone forgot...... to add another condition to the laundry list.
As long as the sucker customer is going to be there a couple of hours and getting amped up on sugar and coffee, why not just drain a pint of blood out of them and sell it to the blood bank. Don't they realize how much money is in the blood bank business?

Their real agenda is to make exotic concoctions with a little coffee in it so you'll end up gay. It's a conspiracy figured out by Rev. Wright.

Free WiFi?This has the smell of a corporate marketing decision badly thought out. If you want to attract customers with "Free WiFi" you had a good chance to do it years ago, but were too greedy to do so. Free WiFi should be free of purchase and time restrictions, and customer friendly (this means multiple power outlets around your place), and friendly service all along. PANERA is doing it right, they offer all of these things, and let you have all you can drink regular coffee for a buck and a half. Sure, at times you'll have customers that will surf the net for half a day, so what, put a welcome page in your WiFi service that friendly suggests using small tables, or sharing a table when staying for an extended time.

But is is free if you were......If you were going to spend the money there anyway, all you are doing is putting the cash on the card and using the card for your purchases.

CoolWorks for me. I've been using their card for awhile and I especially enjoy the perks. We have more Starbucks than Panera Bread's, so the free Wi-Fi is awesome. Two hours is enough. I remember working on my finals on my laptop at Starbucks and couldn't justify paying for about twenty minutes of internet access to research something.

Actually it's the sign of the economy. The reality that consumer spending on non-essentials is slowing significantly is starting to impact the bottom line at many companies. Starbucks is desperate enough to do this, hoping to lure people in by the offer of "free" WIFI. I'm not so certain it will work.
If inflation doesn't stabilize or actually drop and consumer spending, which is the driving factor in our economy(making up 70% of our GDP since we've allowed corporations to ship production and workforces abroad), see even less money available for non-essential services. When Time Warner and Comcast wake up to the fact that their attempt to raise fees through the use of caps may drive a good portion of their customer base to less expensive Internet access, it may be too late to undo the damage. (Yes, people reading broadband reports may be willing to give up something to keep broadband access, but the average consumer who isn't earning more than $45,000 a year may be hard pressed to justify keeping expensive Internet access--or even cable TV for that matter-- when it's getting harder and harder for them to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table and gasoline in the tank of their car.)
Much of the world's economy, not just our domestic one, rides on the back of American consumer debt. The pundits driving up commodity prices with the talk of Chinese expansion keeping demand for oil high, fail to discuss the global impact of a prolonged slump in consumer purchases by Americans. (Yes, there's a Chinese middle class, but it's not large enough yet to make up for a drop in sales to the US.) The reality of falling American consumer purchases began hitting segments of the Indian manufacturing market, especially clothing manufacturers, early this year with resulting layoffs of Indian workers. If American consumers continue to reduce their purchases of non-essentials through the first or second quarter of 2009, expect to see the Chinese economy begin to cool a bit, too. If that happens, once a drop in the demand for consumption begins, it may be hard to stop a free fall and OPEC may yet discover again that greed can kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Mean while back at Starbucks...I'm surf'in the 'net on my Sprint 450 EverythingPlan via my Motorola RAZR V3M watch'in Nascar...or whatever. And no, there's NO CAPS on Sprint's plans( their "everything service:, I might add). But, I DO get faster speed compared to "sharing" over Starbuck's network. I know this as I used to have T-Mobile's hotspot service, then cancelled that service since I get ATT's service free with their DSL offerings @ Starbucks. Use a T-Mobile MDA as well as a laptop for ATT's offerings. Check out what you have out there folks, bet one way or another, Starbucks has you covered. I prefer using Sprint as it does the job for me..and I can leave Starbucks whenever and still have 3G service.

Starbucks can't handle demand for free Wi-FiJune 4, 2008 (IDG News Service) Starbucks Corp. began offering coffee drinkers a way to get free Wi-Fi access at its shops on Tuesday, but some customers had a hard time cashing in. That's because some people were unable to access Starbucks' Card Rewards Web site to sign up for the program, which offers two hours of free Wi-Fi access per day to participants. » www.computerworld.com/ac ··· =hm_list

Probably a good ideaOne of starbucks main issues to some people I know has been the lack of wifi. If Starbucks has it, they and people like them are more likely to hang around and buy more coffees. Also, Starbucks is everywhere. The little independent coffee shop with free wifi isn't. For people who travel, this is an important feature. Starbucks gets a steady revenue stream, important marketing information, and it costs them next to nothing. In actuality, you have to admit most people probably won't even end up using the wifi.

Re: stop the gamesYou are 100% right, we need no BS marketing. Corporate marketing forgets that the so called "bottom line" is not the profit line, but the customer itself. They realize this when demand diminishes and their profit tanks. At this time they also remember that their jobs in marketing is to market a product to the "customer base", not just selling ideas to their CEO's and company shareholders in order to keep them happy and thus keep their marketing jobs.
