| And the hubub is? Maybe it is just that the purchase will add coverage in rural areas to AT&T's wireless network and save the company $2.5 billion in roaming costs and overhead expenses.
After all, ATT is a COMMUNICATIONS company!
It is very interesting that this publication derides carriers for not providing rural coverage and then derides them for adding rural coverage. Someone here seems to always have to complain about something....

I'm just disgusted that with all of the advancements in technology, my only 2 real choices in Chicago are Att and Comcast. Both have good spots and bad spots, but try living in an area where they're both bad!
PS. If they have 200 billion for mergers, then why can't they hire coherant operators to speak with instead of automated systems or "Chad" from India?

| That Explains Why... I was wondering why they sold the CDMA networks in Nebraska to Verizon and USCellular, AT&T had no use for them.
Please god all mighty do not allow AT&T to buy USCellular.
Makes me worry with USCC's lack of wanting to build a EVDO network, why build it if AT&T will rip it down anyway?

| Re: That Explains Why... Eventually you have to start buying customers because there is not many GSM carriers to buy, that's my worry.
If you wanted customers and towers in rural areas where there is no GSM USCC would be a good buy, especially if their network needed upgrades anyway.

| gsm Dobson is the 3rd largest provider of gsm in the country, after AT&T, and T-Mobile. Dobson is also the largest independent rural cell service provider. I remember reading that Dobson is looking into selling itself, possibly to AT&T, a few days before this deal was announced.
We'll probably start to see more rural, and regional cell providers begin to get bought or merge to compete.

| Re: gsm said by pepperxn : Dobson was Alaska's largest wireless provider. I disagree with that statement. Dobson's footprint up here is nowhere close to that of ACS. Which is crap because ACS basically has a monopoly on everything involving telecommunications in this state. There is extremely limited competition in this state when it comes to telcos in general. Wireless is a different story, but not by much. -- Want my opnion, see »....Sucks

| From Bloomberg.com...
"The company is the largest wireless provider in Alaska, according to its Web site."
Looks like AT&T will gain 1.7 million customers, adding to their 1.5 million lead over Verizon Wireless.
"The sale of other rural providers may follow", "In addition to Dobson, Rural Cellular Corp., Centennial Communications Corp. and U.S. Cellular Corp. might be potential targets."
"Other companies with rural mobile-phone operations include Cincinnati Bell Inc. and Alaska Communications Systems Group Inc."

| this is bad IMO this sucks
1st Cingualr buys out At&t wireless, then SBCX Buys out Southwestern bell(to get the other half of the shares of cingular) now they rename themselves at&t, and now they buy dobson
im sorry but the government has to stop this, at&t is becoming that same old ugly hag she was back before mabell was broken up
we need to break up at&t again, there is merging, and then there is trying to make a monopoly which is exactly what at&t is trying to do again
