Subway Wireless Becoming More Prevalent
Boston subway network goes live...

The Boston Globe notes that Boston subway riders are now getting mobile phone & data service underground. The first MBTA T-Stations and tunnels are now wired for service by a company named InSite Wireless, who then charges wireless carriers for use of the underground network. InSite was supposed to have the first four stations wired two years ago, but blames negotiations with incumbent carriers for the delay.

The service is currently being offered in Downtown Crossing, Government Center, State, and Park Street stations, and all the tunnels in between. Expansion to other stations and tunnels is expected as cellphone service providers see demand and are willing to pay for the connection.

A company by the name of Transit Wireless recently struck a deal with New York City Transit to spend up to $200 million to wire (or unwire as the case may be) all 277 NYC subway stations.

about time

I cant imagine having been stuck on the subway and unable to make any calls or get any news during 9/11 or the North East blackout.

Plus, I know a lot of parents who always have to rush home to get their kids and if the trains and delayed or running late, then this will give them a chance to call up and make alternate arrangements.

Re: DC

That is true and it has been that way for a decade, but in the T, albeit a small part of it, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile customers all have access. I do not advocate talking on cell phones on the train as there is enough noise from the trains, but it was nice that when I waiting for a train I could text to let people know I was on my way.

Jared must be pissed with all the microwaves...

That was my first thought.. who the hell would use their laptop at Subway? Nobody uses it at McDonalds where they offer wifi... nor have I seen any at BK where the wifi is free.

-----

Since this isnt about Subway, but about subways, I'm not sure I'd have my laptop out on a subway anyways. Too many lowlifes to cause trouble... that and annoying kids with their juiceboxes. Too many things could go wrong in that situation.

I believe when it meant wireless, it meant cell phone service as well. Not just internet. Hence the mention of Transit Wireless at the end.

subways are safe here. maybe 20 years ago they weren't. you can get to with 10 minutes walking distance for 2 bucks or a subway and bus. a lot cheaper than a car and no traffic when on the subway.

The jukebox has been replaced by a large HP or Macbook on the stoop blaring hip hop and rap with 4-6 gangbangers around it.

All subways should have cell service

I wish that the LA subways would get cell service. That is the only subway I've ever been on and it was a little scary with a man with a knife waving it around at a little kid and then cutting his fingers and writing on the floor with his blood...

As you walk down into the subways, they have a number posted on the wall to call the subway police, but then no cell phones work in the tunnels or stations...

Actually, the L.A. Subways are some of the most secure anywhere. I have ridden them several times, and NEVER seen any incidents, nor on the light rail or Metrolink. They learned many lessons from the NYC subways, and made sure and apply them here.

Re: All subways should have cell service

have to disagree- ridden LA above ground twice and both times there were gang bangers exposing themselves to female riders. live in NYC and ride MTA daily and have never had any problem thanks to MTA cops who ride the trains. never saw anyone from sheriff's office when I was in LA.

Re: All subways should have cell service

I think you could see the same in NYC, I have NEVER seen those kinds of things on MetroRail (subway and light rail) or Metrolink (commuter trains) in SoCal.

Comment

People need to learn to live without cell phone service for a few minutes.

That is all.

Correction to 277 NYC subway stations

The correct number of stations is in the 400+ range, while 277 sounds about right for the fully-underground stations.

Wireless "T"

I also saw that on the MBTA's website. Not that I don't already see enough people yakking away on their cellphones when riding the Red Line into Boston from Quincy/Braintree (which is above ground). So let's see, you'll lose service when the train descends into the tunnel to Andrew & regain it around Downtown Crossing. You'll get to keep it passed Charles/MGH (also surface) and lose it after crossing the Longfellow Bridge to the tunnel decent towards Kendall. I have Verizon, so I'll be sure to give that a try on my next trip!
