Suddenlink Brings DOCSIS 3.0 To TexasThough speeds top out at 20Mbps... 09:03AM Friday Aug 14 2009 by Karl Bodetags: business · bandwidth · cable · networking · SuddenlinkSuddenlink this week officially announced they're bringing DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades and speeds up to 20Mbps to to select areas of Texas. According to the provider, the deployment will service 100,000 customers, or about 8% of Suddenlink's 1.3 million residential subscribers. Suddenlink offers cable broadband service in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia. Just last month the company began offering users a usage monitor to help consumers track usage, a move that could ultimately result in caps and overage charges. The carrier consistently brings up the rear in our user review rankings, something reflected by how hard it is to get standalone broadband pricing information out of their website (try Lubbock, TX zip code 79401). @ameritech.net | LBK I live in Lubbock, and they've had 20meg for about 6 months, but it's around $90 and the upload sucks. Also, all of these docsis 3.0 "trial" areas are very close to the area they are testing the usage monitor.

Hell, 10-20 is fine for even the most demanding streaming videos, but make it 10mb download / 10mb upload. This 10mb/200kb stuff is getting ridiculous. I upload a lot more now (especially data backed-up online) and I hate when I saturate the upload link which seems to cause download speeds to drop to 56k levels. --

1 edit | Re: LBK True, that10mb/200kb is dumb. I much rather have 10/10 speed.
I have 20/2 speed and most servers don't even get me the full speeds. 2mbps upload still is much better than the 1mbps I had with timewarner. I can't wait till 60mbps speeds come out with Charter....that is if they come with that at all lol.
I'd think they would go with 50mbps for DOCSIS 3.0 rather than 20mbps. -- The Internet is about to go down....it is actually.

Are those "select areas of Texas" the FIOS areas of Texas?

| Re: FIOS killer cherrypicking West Texas for the most part has SL,U-verse, and Wimax. SL is not upgrading any of the areas that have no competition (North Houston, etc.). I have the unfortunate experience of having SL in both my hometown and college town, and neither can ever max out the "8 meg" speeds. | |
| cypherstream Looking forward to the future of things. Premium,MVM join:2004-12-02 Reading, PA clubs: | Only 20mbps? You don't need DOCSIS 3.0 for 20mbps. Cablevision and RCN have had 20+ mbps tiers with DOCSIS 2.0. My DOCSIS 1.1 Comcast power boost reaches to about 20mbps as well.
Why not utilize the technology for all its worth and start it at 50mbps?

| Re: Only 20mbps? utilize that for 50Mbits speed? then users need to utilize to tune the TCP window size be largely window in order to get benefits of 50Mbits of speed or otherwise if users don't utilized with TCP window size then they are out of the luck unless users are on the typical Vista or Win 7 OS that utilizes auto tune window size. -- Professional Linux environmental blows microsoft windows out of the water. | |

All the while, none of the other markets haven't seen any upgrades.

| docsis3 i have been using 20 mbit line since lubbock began offering it in december using a docsis 2 router. last week they downgraded me to the 8 mbit line and tried to argue that the router they provided me in december would not support full speed of the 20mbit line, and wanted me to pay 75 dollars for a new docsis 3 router. i told them to put my service back on (without a new modem) and can assure you, i'm getting 100% of the speed that i'm paying for (although 2mbit upload is too slow) | |
