Also, Packet8 in talks for sub takeover
(old news - 05:25PM Tuesday Jul 17 2007)
tags: business · trouble · VoIP
Nearly six days after the SunRocket saga began, someone involved with the shutdown finally speaks. Sherwood Partners, the company handling the liquidation of SunRocket, aimed this statement at our inbox:
SunRocket, one of the largest VoIP providers has shut down its service. An affiliate of Sherwood Partners, LLC is managing the process as the Assignee for the benefit of creditors.

Sherwood expects to enter into agreements with other service providers to transition the customers of SunRocket to such providers. The customers of SunRocket will be informed of this opportunity to transition to another provider via email as soon as an agreement is reached.

Creditors will receive a notice within the next 30 days in regards to the general assignment and for the filing of claims in the liquidation process of SunRocket.
At 4PM reports emerged that Packet8 was in negotiation with Sherwood to acquire the remaining customers alongside other operators. As we mentioned this morning, many SunRocket customers aren't waiting. We're told current device config files need updating Friday, so the deal needs to happen before then, or what's currently passing as service goes dark.

Re: AOL!

I hope the individual(s) who is/are responsible for this decision (not to let SunRocket user know what was going on) never get another job in their career and go bankrupt themselves.

This behavior is despicable.

To little to late

Did they really expect people to wait this long to know what is going on with their phone service, without making other arrangements?

I was willing to "wait and see" but even I decided to move on and get service from my cable co.

voip is cool

@comcast.net

I'll bet that most SR customers haven't switched. Heck, most probably don't even know about all this if their service is still working.

Unless they happen to frequent BBR or have seen the couple of other media reports the last couple of days, most wouldn't even have had a clue that this was going on.
Perhaps thats why the company decided to say nothing until something was a bit more definitive.

I wouldn't be too sure that "...most probably don't even know..." that their phone service is down? Maybe they aren't aware of what is actually going on behind the outage; however, I don't think any SR customers have service anymore and I'll bet most have moved on already or are in the process, such as myself. It's all over the news, my friend.

Re: To little to late

My SR service still works.
It's not critical so I think I'll wait to see what comes of SR moving their customers to another provider. If it's a great deal, I'll go with it. If these other deals are better, I'll do those.
It's either a smart way to do it, or just lazy.

my sunrocket still works. I just forwarded my calls to my cell until it dies for good and I can move on...or just use my cell like I did before I got VOIP.

I had NO CLUE anything was going on with sunrocket until I happened to see an article on yahoo that was buried at the bottom of the page. I've never had any problems with my service before. I don't have any problems now...but it looks like I will in a couple of days!!

Seems if SR had any competence, subscriber transitions would have been in the works and finalized for uninterrupted service. Probably selling all our names to various VOIP providers, is their transition idea

I'd just like to update my original posts...

I did get an email, that looks as though it came from SR..

I went ahead and signed up with the company that made it sound like they could pick right up where SR left off, so I look forward to seeing how that goes.

I also canceled the order for phone service from my cable co.

Vonage

I just signed up with vonage and their website said that my number was OK to port to them. So I went ahead with porting from SR to Vonage. Do you think this will happen? I am just screwed without my #.

P.S. Why is their website still offering crap, instead of an official announcement?

Sunrocket

Typical corporate - paid subscribers are the last to know anything.

My Gizmo went into "registration loop" late Sunday night so I called SR on Monday morning - only to be told that "their registration server is down and would be back online that afternoon". I asked incredulously "you only have ONE server handling registrations?" and was told that they did not have any more information.

Yes, no more information because they were out of business and didn't have the b*lls to tell their paid subscribers.

I switched back to Vonage until I hook up with Comcast VoIP.

Vonage Is the BEST

Vonage is not going anywere and people should know that by now. They are a public company so have tougher rulez then all these SMALL VOIP Companies that keep everything quiet. I see these becoming a trend with smaller voip providers. Rember Vonage has income every month unlike these voip provides that blew away all the money from prepaid sign up's

Tougher rules like stealing other people's patents? Packet8 patents > Vonage patents.

No "Gotcha"?

Ha ha...I just called SR's 800 number, to see what would happen.

The recording came on, of course...

"Sunrocket...the no gotchas phone company...we are no longer taking calls."

I think that is sad and hilarious at the same time. In the same recording, you get the "no gotchas" promise, and a kiss off.

I used to be with SR, and at first I loved them. I cancelled after 10 months due to declining service quality last October. I am glad I was able to port my number away and find another phone service. I really feel badly for the people who stuck with them and tried to make it work. For their loyalty, they get this.

Cfg file *must* be updated or else

>>We're told current device config files need updating Friday, so the deal needs to happen before then, or what's currently passing as service goes dark.

huh? I've had provisioning off on my gizmo for 2 years and never lost a beat. Why the sudden "requirement" that my ATA's cfg gile to be updated for my service to continue if no one is manning the helm and we're on auto-pilot?

..unless they're NOT referring to the ATA's-- which is unclear to me from the story.

reader

@telengy.net

Re: Cfg file *must* be updated or else

the logical inference would be that the server to which your gizmo talks will not be there after Friday -- so you need to change the configuration in your gizmo to talk with another server that will be there after Friday!

Pre- Paid Subscribers

no warning....no service...not answering their phone calls. I had renewed and pre-paid recently as well as my son who I referred....shame-on-you SunRocket!!! I am disabled and needed to know ahead of time to make other arrangements. I did not know until tonight that I did not have phone service.

Shafted and mad!!!

Re: Pre- Paid Subscribers

I've called my credit card company that I paid for my SunRocket service with and filed a dispute. I imagine that once this gets heavy on their side they'll stop honoring the disputes but in the mean time, I have friends left and right that are getting partial refunds from their companies (i.e. AMEX, CitiFinancial, Chase). I'd recommend anyone and everyone who paid with a credit card post Jan. 1 of this year to call their respective credit card companies and file a dispute.

If you want to see the lower priced providers survive, SUPPORT THEM (not vonage) Any VOIP provider offering unlimited voip (usa, canada, puerto rico at a minimum) for under $20 per month should get your support, because that's why you signed up for sunrocket in the first place..

Vonage has probably the worst business model in the industry. They own nothing. They outsource everything... and every dime they make they spend on advertising while ignoring the problems with their infrastructure. They're a "virtual" company.

In the meantime, Vonage, other issues or not, is still going strong and SR (and probably many of those other *private* VoIP services soon to follow) is.....where? I believe that would be GONE.

I would never sign up with any of these small, *private* VoIP services who, as we are seeing, can and will disappear overnight. Nor would I ever give them money for a year or two in advance just to save a couple of dollars overall. You get what you pay for, and sometimes that turns out to be NOTHING.

I still see people asking "Who's the cheapest to switch to? Who is offering a year in advance for less??". Are they kidding? They just got burned and they're looking to turn around and do the same thing all over again to save a few dollars....which may be moot when *that* company also disappears and they lose again rather than "save".

People should stick with month to month and a non-private company.

SunRocket's Gone

We noticed about 6PM yesterday that we had no dialtone. We've been with SunRocket for almost two years and have experienced short outages two or three times so I figured I'd just check later and expected it to be back online. When it was still out this morning I tried calling and got the "We're not taking sales or support calls" recording. That sent me to the Web where I discovered the sad truth. It's truly an irresponsible way to cut off service.

I'm just glad that my second year was almost up anyway, so I'm only losing out on a month more of paid service. It was cheap and the quality was good while it lasted. I called Packet8 this afternoon and got switched. The sales rep there was awesome and they're only charging $5 for the first month for SunRocket customers and guarantee to port my number within 24 hours of my receiving, signing, and returning a release form. Sounds like I should be back up and running by the weekend.

Oddly enough, while I have no dialtone and most people are having to reach me on my cell after getting a busy signal when dialing my SunRocket number, we're still also getting calls on the SunRocket line from certain people -- and those same people can consistently call us. Weird!

Confirm

They can't even pay their creditors. If anyone will get paid (which is doubtful), it will be them. A "class action" by former customers would be nothing more than an exercise in frustration.....or maybe they'd end up with one of those checks similar to other "big class action" suits....a check for under $5, lol.....

Fabulous! Someone should tape this to Lisa Hook’s forehead...

On a personal note, yes it’s a sad day - I pretty much had 2 years of decent service at a very decent price. I have the feeling that the independent VOIP’s will soon go the way of Sunrocket. All these lawsuits and the bundling by the majors will shut the others down.

In the meantime, I’m a man tempting fate and signed up for ViaTalk today - just hope they can port my number from Sunrocket, pronto...

Spoke to a friend who has SunRocket in NJ..He is still getting a dial tone. He got 199. For 18 months last April..So he got a huge value. The rule applies that you cannot just be a phone service, particularly a residential phone service and make a profit. Packet 8 and Vonage seem to be the two independents that have some time left..But the clock is ticking. Some Small carriers can still exist in the market, but whats the big advantage, if its not price. The quality of the cable networks and telephone networks are far better, and there competitive with players like Vonage and Packet 8.

Remember were still in the first 5 years of the big VOIP boom. The next 5 years Cable companies will continue to be in this space. Sprint does a great job here.

Oddly enough, I have service this morning. I have no idea why. Like most people, I lost service Monday shortly after noon EST. None all day yesterday. And suddenly this AM, there it is.

I patched together a backup phone yesterday between Grand Central and Gizmo, so bought myself a day or two to figure out where I'm ultimately going.

Must say, this has made me very gun-shy of privately owned VoIP. But I really hate Comcast, ATT and Qwest. So what to do...?
