A week after it all began...
(old news - 03:33PM Thursday Jul 19 2007)
tags: business · VoIP
As we mentioned yesterday, it appears that if you were willing to pay SunRocket's liquidators a little dough, you were tagged as a preferred VoIP provider in an e-mail sent to SunRocket refugees this morning. For those playing along at home, this is the first direct SunRocket communication to customers -- a full week after CEO Lisa Hook abandoned ship and employees began posting to our forums.

According to the e-mail from Sherwood Partners:
"After significant effort by the Company to avoid this result, SunRocket is in the process of closing its operations and therefore will no longer be able to provide you with the phone service that you have been accustomed to. However, this email provides you with an opportunity to sign up with select service providers who we believe will offer outstanding replacement service (emphasis added).

In order to assist you, we have entered into negotiations with a number of service providers. As a result of those negotiations, we have entered into agreements with 8x8, Inc., provider of the Packet8 service, and Unified Communications Corp., provider of Teleband service to offer you the best options and we are proud to recommend the following alternatives to you. Please make your decision to move to a new service provides immediately as future service is uncertain."
In addition to Packet8, one of the recommended services is TeleBlend (note the e-mail gets the name wrong), which is offered by Unified Communications Corporation. It's amazing that they've achieved the rank of "outstanding replacement service" when the vast majority of our forum regulars have never heard of them.

While contracts are null and void, Packet8 says they're waiving $100 worth of activation charges for SunRocket customers. TeleBlend, meanwhile, says they'll offer customers replacement service for $12.95 a month for the remainder of their contracts, and unlike Packet8, customers will be able to use their existing hardware.

A good question. A few rumors were going around the SR forum that everything would go dead on Friday, due to stale config files for the gizmo's

I took the plunge, and signed up with TB (teleblend) and will be more than happy to let everyone know how it goes over in the old SR (maybe soon to be the new TB forum?)

Stay tuned...

Chakey, They never sent me a message either. I suppose they didn't have to since I found out anyway. I signed up with Vonage's monthly plan yesterday and need to make sure SR doesn't try to charge my CC again! I have to shell out some coin for a call blocking solution, otherwise, goin' with the big dog hoping the "ship stays afloat".

Still shopping

Re: End date

What kind of call blocking solution did you come up with? That is one of the features that I really liked about SR and I'm having trouble finding a service w/ the same feature.

Re: msg deleted

O my, so I signed up for teleblend last night figuring I would have phone service until I could get ported to someone else. Paid my money and got my account. Look my phone is now working. But I was trying to turn off call forwarding and teleblend does not have anything to maintain your phone options on there website. Then I saw the post above and decided to log into my old sunrocket account and sure enough turned off my call forwarding and it turned off. I would have to say teleblend is definitely still sunrocet.

gotcha

@rr.com

Re: msg deleted

Well, SR has just changed their "no gotchas" slogan to "we gotcha" as they walk to the bank with the proceeds from those that got short-changed on their annual plan, including me. However, you do have to give the 2 ex MCI founders credit for offering a feature rich VoIP at a reasonable price. I would certainly be dubious about the two providers (TeleBend and Packet8) appointed by the liquidators, thier either friends of the family or money talks. After browsing the alternatives I ended up with Lingo. Would have gone back to Vonage if they had a annual plan. Even so, Vonage is having it's finacial woes at present.

Guys,

Whatever you do, don't sign up with Teleblend. They registered the domain on the 18th, the same day SR sent out the emails telling everyone to use Packet8 and Teleblend. Be aware!!!! This could be another shaft by a company that I loved when they worked so marveously, and now let me down.

My service was really never completely gone. I can say a few things, TB has changed my CC, and the password that used to work to get into the router and "unlock" it no longer function.

I still don't have voicemail, but as far as the phone itself goes, it seems to be working just fine.

I guess the 1st ones fired were their webmasters. Either that or they outsourced their web site and when they stopped paying their bills, the outsourcer refused to make any more changes.

Don't sign with this company, it is sunrocket. They filed a BK and 3 days after opened a new company called teleblend and is using the same equipment and phones. Isn't that peculier and a coincident! They don't want to pay back or give continuing service to annual customers.

They can go to hell! I would never sign under this company.

Went with VOIPVOIP.COM... I tried to get my GIZMO to work with other servies but VOIPVOIP was the easiest. Plus, I am bot to the POTS for my main commo. VOIPVOIP at no charge and .03 per minute (no incoming line) is a great compromise.

Otherwise, Packet8 would have been my choice and they apparently own their own infrastructure. Unlike former SR.

Readers also seem to be indicating that the SunRocket # now kicks to Teleblend, and their user data has found its way to Teleblend's sign-up servers....

Teleblend

Teleblend seems to be taking credit for the people that still have service with SR. I signed up with Teleblend last night and my phone seems to be working better today. I can sign into my account on Teleblend, but I have know idea if I'm still on Sunrocket or Teleblend. I put it on credit card in case I need to dispute any charges. Hope it works

I didnt see anything about credit for Sunrocket. Probably as many recent users did, dispute it with the credit card company and also sign up for telebend to make use of the $13+ a month porting the telephone SR tel #

Both companies are jokes

Guys - If you haven’t already, take a look at Lingo (»www.lingo.com). This company is solid as a rock - backed by Primus, the 5th largest telecom in the world. Don’t switch to a provider who’s going to bite it like Sunrocket a few months down the road (ViaTalk, Packet8, etc.). They are all small, independent VoIP providers that have small customer counts and rely on venture capitalism (aka SunRocket). Lingo's parent company has $1.3 Billion - yes, that's with a 'B' - in annual revenue and over 2.4 million customers.

Special SunRocket to Lingo promotion at www.lingo.com/sunrocket.

Can’t beat it. Become a Lingohead!

I can't help but wonder if VoIP isn't really ready for "primetime". You have SunRocket that just folds overnight and nobody steps in (Courts, FCC, etc.), ViaTalk with the same business model is SR, and Vonage who is about ready to take it up the ass from Verizon.

I'm starting to think that I may go back to Cable or POTS for the next year or two until all this unfolds. It may be more expensive, but at least they're stable.

Re: ???

If I did VOIP right now - it would have to be with a MAJOR player - like Time Warner and not a independent company like Vonage et al.

Although - my preference is POTs and at least stable unlike VOIP companies operating at a loss to get customers then realizing they can't raise rates to begin making money or lose their customers to other companies offereing a lower cost.

Only other way I would go with an independent is if they are public and they are making money on the actual service - even if they would charge more.

I posted the email headers a long with the full email that I got.

I don't really know how in this situation, we can say for sure if it's real, or not, and I am not even sure we could all even agree on what being "real" or "legit" in this case, would even be or entail.

Yes-I received my email last night 11:28 PM EST

An ex-happy SR customer for over a year. No challenges until Monday this week. Signed up Tuesday with ViaTalk for the 6 months free but called them, waited 11/2 hrs and canceled this morning. Funny thing, the invoice was completed 5 minutes after my call. I have to give them kudos, they emailed me and said disregard the invoice statement since I canceled. Went with TeleBlends as #1540 customer. Why not at $12.95/mo for now. Also since they have access, records and most of all the equipment we all have as access, it is the best at this time. Lets try a few months and see. When they notify us of any rate increase, we can do what we always do - shop around!! Much Success to everyone and hats off to Voip!

Teleblend = Sunrocket?

Has anyone else noticed that you can't sign up for Teleblend UNLESS you have a Sunrocket number?

Even if you click the "Got Vonage?" link, it still asks for your Sunrocket number.

Their entire FAQ section is devoted to Sunrocket questions.

Is Teleblend a subset of what was left of Sunrocket?

I agree with both of you. They're using the same images on their front pages, and it really seems like they're the same people.

ExSunRocket

@comcast.net

Not the same people (they explains who they are on their TeleBlend/SunRocket website), but they are one of the two services that SunRocket recommends, and they seem to be the ones who got a claim on SunRocket's equipment and keep the service going. SunRocket's last email says: "...Teleblend has been working behind the scenes already to restore and continue service for all Sun Rocket customers."

The transfer to TeleBlend took me about a minute and was completely transparent and amazingly easy. The SunRocket gizmo, number, the SR account settings (voicemail, call forwarding, whatever) are all working as if SunRocket was still in charge. All I lost, apparently, is my second line, since I chose not to pay an extra $5 a month for it.

Actually the service has been improving lately. The problems we had a couple of weeks ago seem to have been resolved, and most importantly, the echo is gone. Go figure, maybe this one's going to be as good or better than SunRocket? Keeping my fingers crossed

Teleblend... smelly

This whole Teleblend thing smells.

Their website seems to be solely dedicated to moving SR customers over to them. No info other than the $13/Mo. promo rate they'd charge. No info on international rates and no info on anything else at all.

It looks like this whole outfit was created for the purpose of pumping SR customers in: for example, to sign up the first thing asked is your SR phone number. So... you can't really create new service from scratch?

Looks like vulturing to me, and vultures can't soar too high.

Re: Beware Teleblend

To its looks like its $12.95 for as long as you had your Sunrocket contract. What is it after that?

Why do i think Sunrocket just shutdown changed name to Teleblend to get out of the prepay deals. Or is it my imagination the terms of server pages look almost the same. What did they do just remove sunrocket and put teleblend in place.

If they are behind this I wouldn't put much faith in this new "Teleblend" company... I know from first hand experience that Prexar is a total POS company and I believe Prexar was absorbed by USA Telecom in 2003.

Has anyone else tried voip.com?

I had two lines/accounts with at total of three numbers on Sunrocket. I've only been a SunRocket customer since January '07, but their service was intermittently flakey. Still, I thought I was saving money - now I gotta refute the credit card bill.

After reading ConsumerCompare.org on Tuesday, I signed up for voip.com. They offered a $50 rebate (they have since stopped the rebate offer) off their $199 annual plan and because it seemed like I could get the second line for only $9.95/month and the third (virtual) number for another $5/month.

Well, I voip.com immediately gave me an account number and they dinged my credit card right away. But they have my account in a funny state where I can't add the additional line nor the virtual number. I opened 4 service tickets on their web site (which is a nice feature of their web site), but all I got was a couple of canned emails. Their customer sales support was clueless - they had to refer me to technical support. I spoke to their technical support twice, and all they could say was "wait another day or so." After 1.5 days of trying to work with voip.com, I broke down today and I also signed up with Teleblend on their promise to keep some kind of service running.

I did read Teleblend's fine print - it says the $12.95 service is month-to-month. But they also say that they can change the terms simply by posting another agreement on their web site (see very end of the T's & C's) - some assurance!

Since I only signed up with voip.com for one number, I'll probably go ahead and see how their service works.

Re: How is Packet 8 softtalk

I've used it several times. It worked perfectly for me. I've use FWD and Stanaphone softphones and by far, P8's was the most reliable and had the highest quality.
