NTT DoCoMo bridging gap between 3G, 4G...

NTT DoCoMo says they've just completed tests of "Super 3G" wireless technology in which they achieved downstream speeds of 250Mbps. The company's Super 3G technology is technically included under the LTE (Long Term Evolution) umbrella, and is theoretically capable of speeds up to 300Mbps. The goal is to use Super 3G to bridge the gaps between existing HSDPA systems and future LTE deployments. The company has transmitted data at almost 5Gbps to a receiver moving at 10 kilometers per hour using 4G technology. Commercial Super 3G, if launched at all, would hit the market in 2010 -- and that's Japan.

Neat

With all that 700MHz spectrum, Verizon should have no excuse to give us that kind of bandwidth in a few years- but who knows, really...

Re: Neat

With the price they paid for it... they will have to charge a lot for this.

Device question

Will LTE use something similar to SIM cards that would allow users to use any "carrier unlocked" device on an LTE network by simply installing the SIM or will users need to get the device registered on the network similar to CDMA devices today?

This is news?

Why is this news? This is only for backbones, not residential service.

Why do you say this is for backbone. The news item says this is to mobile DEVICES. Nothing in there about backbones. And while this is a TEST of a theoretical speed that won't be used to mobile devices soon, it is a TEST of mobile communications and NOT a backbone.

Well, I talked with our interns about this, and they originally wanted to post pictures of Kate Beckinsale for much of the day. A few wanted stories about Lemurs.

One of the five, who isn't a habitual Tequila abuser, looked briefly up at the title of the website and thought this story would be more relevant -- so they posted a story about actual advancement in the industry.

We'll have meetings next week to decide if this was, in fact, the right decision.

Beatings will be doled out if errors were made.

Re: 6+ mph WOW!!

Japan is a crowded country- perhaps 6mph is the average speed on their roads Actually, isn't public transportation much more common there? Can you get a signal on the bullet train?

Who cares

All any of the wireless comanies want to offer in my area is dial-up speed for $60 a month and a 5 GB a month cap. Until they can at least offer me the ~500 Kbps speeds they offer their other customers they really need to STFU about this other crap.

Fibre

This is why I love seeing companies deploy fibre.

Wireless is the only way to go!
