Super Bowl to Be Streamed Live For First Time
Via NBC, NFL Websites and Verizon Phones
by Karl Bode Tuesday 20-Dec-2011 tags: Video · business · alternatives
The NFL and NBC have announced that NBC will be streaming live NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl for the first time. According to the league, the broadcasts of wild card Saturday, the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl will be available on the league's and network's websites and through Verizon's NFL Mobile app. At the moment, the only restriction listed in the league press release is that Verizon has the exclusive for viewing on mobile phones. At the moment it appears the streams will be fee-free and non-paywalled, though you wonder if an executive at the newly fused NBC-Comcast will be tempted to infect the offer with TV Everywhere-itis -- aka bury the offer behind a paywall or restrict it solely to users that have a Comcast TV or broadband connection.

cool

Sure would be nice to have it wide open, and here's hoping that it stays that way. Money is already being made "hand over fist" by the event, advertising, etc.

No doubt it'll be some flash based video, with slight (annoying and headache inducing) motion jitter and not as high quality as a real TV broadcast, but it's not a bad start.

I want to watch Superbowl on a large widescreen HDTV using either the cableTV or OTA connection. Who wants to watch it on a smartphone or tablet?

Being out and about and traveling during the Superbowl you will see guys watching on the Ipads and phones.
There are guys out there would watch from a screen on their thumbnail if they had to.

I don't get it but that's what I observed.
I'm not into football.

I sat next to a guy in Singapore airport watching a NFL football game on his Ipad two weeks ago sometime around midnight. Looks like he was using a Slingplayer.
He didn't have to worry about caps.

Those who are at work, on the road, away from home/a bar.

Outage anyone, lol

Verizon is pretty reliable but if this is available on all Verizon smartphones, including the 3G network, I await the 3G data service outage lol. 4G will probably survive the night though.

I would love to see the faces of Verizon engineers when they heard about this

Re: Outage anyone, lol

My bet is that VZW will, as soon as the teams are known for the 'bowl, roll out some serious (albeit temporary) infrastructure upgrades for the teams' home cities' networks. The real question is how much money Verizon will make off of $10/GB overage charges for this stuff.

In case I don't have access to a TV for the superbowl or im at work...im happy that i am grandfathered in with the 29.99 unlimited data package!

Also...anyone having 3G service problems right now in Rhode Island?

My iPhone 4 on grandfathered unlimited is working just fine over 3g. Might be congestion on your LOCAL tower.

which one would you choose?

Microsoft Silverlight or Adobe Flash?

Re: which one would you choose?

I would think Verizon at least would offer via html5 video, so they can support both iphones and android.

That's what I'm thinking as well. Flash/Silverlight are worse alternatives to that option.

It's going to be Adobe Flash.

Comcast doesn't nickel & dime ... do they?

I'm betting Comcast will turn this into whatever they can do to make the most money from their subscribers that THEY can.

Only if the NFL lets them, all of this will have to be negotiated. The content owners still have rights to how its distributed.

Good

I watch a lot of the games Sunday night on the NBC website. It's great.

As a supposed leader in sports television where are you ESPN? No Monday night football streamed to my computer.. Hello?? ESPN???? What decade are you in?

Um that's the kind of the point you have to have cable and you're cable company has to pay for it which means YOU pay for it. NBC NFL streaming requires no cable subscription what-so-ever.

NFL Mobile App

I've used the app the last couple of weeks and the video is not bad. Comes in handy when out of the house on Sunday.

This isn't the first time the Super Bowl will be streamed live. It's the first time to be legally streamed live.

But will it be available outside the US, with the same commercials as seen in the US? Only Slingbox and pirate streams can guarantee that.

So.....

.... in addition to wasting cable TV bandwidth on this business event, we will now also be wasting internet bandwidth.

A sad turn of events.
