Super3G: 300Mbps
NTT DoCoMo wants it by 2009

Gizmodo notes that Japan's NTT DoCoMo is working on a new "Super 3G" system that should make EVDO look positively prehistoric. According to the company's press release, the provider has begun testing a new experimental "Super 3G" system for mobile communications they hope will be capable of 300Mbps downstream:

"DoCoMo will begin with an indoor experiment to test transmission speed using one transmitting and one receiving antenna. The company will then expand the experiment to examine downlink transmission by employing up to four Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas for both the base station (transmission side) and mobile station (receiving side); the goal is to achieve a downlink transmission speed of 300Mbps."

The service makes use of the MIMO antenna configuration, which is also at the heart of 802.11N gear. The company hopes to have development of the technology completed by 2009.

I'll be a while before it's deployed outside of Tokyo

That's similar to the documentation by GSMA
»www.3gamericas.org/English/news_···01&s=ENG

I think it'll be a while before anyone will be deploying it.

1. Spectrum (anyone have 40MHz of available spectrum?)
2. Backhaul - anyone able to afford running GigE (fiber) to each site ? 300Mbps... assume 3 sectors = 900Mbps min.

When something like this is availble (yeah it will exist eventually), I don't see it outside of dense urban areas for a while. Who knows... maybe AT&T will run this off their VRAD's

With Bandwidth like that, it could BE a backhaul. Seriously, Mr. Internet Swed Legend gave his Mom backhaul bandwidth just to show it could be done. Looks like it's more a matter of will than technology.

4 years ago, we were neck deep in CDMA doubting that 3G would ever come. Seems we normally get about 10% of the promised final product so, 15-30Mb sounds ok.

I guess it'll do.

so.....

about the time we get 100Mbps wired connections, the world's broadband leaders will be using faster wireless connections.

I feel like telling America's broadband incumbents "heck of a job, Brownie".

FiOS

is making a lot cents right now. Thats why I never banked on fibre. Wireless is the way to go.

Dude, fiber will always be required for the backbone of the internet, let alone for end users, Mostly because of its virtually endless bandwidth capacity and also nothing moves faster than light.

Re: FiOS

Yes, fibre for the backhaul but not for the casa. Too costly.

I have fiber to the casa. It's not AT&T or Verizon either.

Apparently even smaller companies (not driven by stock prices) realize it's the future.

Re: FiOS

but as the multimedia demands grow....fiber will be in the casa...because wireless will never be able to deliver the kind of bandwidth required without making males everywhere sterile. (hehe)

Re: FiOS

what exactly is a bad thing...

fios in casa is definitely a good thing...
but trying to pull 30-100 Mbits (per client) wirelessly will require so much energy to pose health problems??? NOT good at all

don't get me wrong but broadband through the cell towers such as EV DO and 3G are awesome, but that's only a max of 800Kbits (per client) ...and for cellular devices, that's adequate...but if you have a full computer and need those 30-100mbits, stick with fiber and/or Wi-fi (802.11g/n are short range that only put out about 30miliwatts to 2 watts)

This has little to do with the US...

This will,as usual, be for the domestic market. The US business culture will simply not allow these advancements to migrate until every last penny has been milked from old technology. You'll be perpetually one to two generations behind and there is nothing the American consumer can do to change that. The best thing may be to not even read about about it and save yourself the frustration.

Just Say No to MIMO

I don't know who dreamed up the pseudo-engineering behind MIMO, but I'd like to see that person fall down a deep well. There's no need for multiple antennae for multiple channels, and you certainly can't re-use the same channel at such short distances. Same thing for antenna diversity. Having an antenna farm can be nice when it serves some good purpose. Marketing is not a good purpose.

Re: Just Say No to MIMO

You can use MIMO on the same channel, as long as all antennas are exactly synchronized; it would even be beneficial for extending range, throughput, and/or reliability. I agree, using MIMO on multiple channels, is irresponsible and greedy. I don't know many people that would appreciate someone hogging/blocking all 4 lanes of an interstate highway. Hopefully, they will take similar considerations when using the RF highway.
