Sweden Launching First ISP For Pirates
'Pirate ISP' to thumb nose at U.S. copyright law
by Karl Bode Tuesday 20-Jul-2010 tags: legal · Fileswapping · world
Sweden's Pirate Party recently made headlines for not only agreeing to be The Pirate Bay's bandwidth provider, but for deciding to use Parliamentary immunity to run the site from inside the Swedish Parliament. Now they're working with several technology companies to launch "Pirate ISP," an ISP that will openly support the exchange of copyrighted files while thumbing its nose at the draconian nature of both Swedish and United States copyright laws. The ISP is set to launch by the end of this summer, and is currently engaged in a limited trial of about 100 residents in the Swedish city of Lund.

On the flipside...

While I feel this is overkill, it exemplifies the backlash against draconian copyright laws that aren't in the best interests of the public.

No justice, no peace as they say.

Good point. Though usually they try to hide that fact.

So does our government as they use the federal reserve to print all money they want, making who ever they please rich. Considering the powers of the world can create money out of nothing but paper, then we should be able to at least create our own crap out of thin air to.... Screw the rich, really your not going to make to many people broking hearted that 50 cent or who ever can't buy that extra Porsche!

I got news for ya: *EVERY* bank, from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York down to the smallest community Credit Union, creates money "out of thin air" in the normal course of operation. That's what banks do: provide liquidity to keep the economy running. They're not simply safe deposit boxes, they create money everytime they write a loan.

It's funny that some Fox News celebrities have dragged up the tired old John Birch Society idea that this is some sort of sinister plot in order to generate ratings. 'guess the educational level of the citizenry is now so low that many people are cluelss of monetary and currency policy that they actually buy it hook line and sinker. Buy gold!!!!!!

That is quite a stretch. A loan has to be backed by actual cash, when the seller cashes the check that money isn't fake its quite real and tangible.

But it isn't. That's the point of a bank; the loans they make are *not* backed up by actual cash; they are backed up the community's faith in the bank and its belief that the bank is a sound one. Utimately, it's backed up by the FDIC insurance that the bank pays for.

If everyone with a checking or saving account in a particular bank showed up at the same time and wanted their money, the bank wouldn't have enough to pay them, and the bank would fail; e.g., that's a "run" on the bank. Banks work because people don't do that; the bank only needs to keep a "reserve" of cash, to cover normal operations, about 10% and determined by gov't regulators. In other words, they loan out about 10x what they take in as deposits. Every bank does this.

This bank-created money is what allows the economy to function; e.g., when the gov't reports on the money supply, only a small percentage of it is actual currancy in circulation. Without this bank-created money we'd be a much poorer country; no one could get a loan to buy a house or a car, or fund a business. As the Big Boy in charge, it's the Fed's job to control how much money is created (primarily by setting the short-term interest rates it allows banks to charge each other). Create too much money and inflation gets out of hand. Create too little and economic growth slows and they trigger a recession. Right now inflation is very low, a sign the Fed isn't "printing too much money".

Re: Nice try

I'm fairly certain that it was an abuse of a CP clause in swedish law that allowed the first raid of Pirate Bay way back when.

Not really. Sweden is a signatory of the Berne Convention (full name the ‘Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works’), a multinational treaty to coordinate copyright protections across countries. So is the U.S.A., which is why we've adjusted some of the terms of our copyright laws over the years.

As a country, Sweden has agreed by treaty to protect the rights of copyright owners to about the same degree as other countries. If Sweden doesn't do something about this, I suppose they could eventually get hit with sanctions in the WTO. When IKEA finds out they need to pay tarriffs when shipping into other countries, this will get cut off soon enough.

Good Concept

While I definitely wouldn't encourage intentionally thumbing my nose at content holders; I would agree that it would be nice to be on an ISP somewhere that is truely "neutral" and doesn't monitor its users' traffic.

Bad idea

"....run the site from inside the Swedish Parliament."
I can just see it now "Swedish parliament saying we fooled them all," now that they think we are on their side we can nail them all for file sharing. We collect all the IPs fof users and we nail them.

Expelled?

I'm no expert on Swedish law, but every parliament I've ever heard of has a right to expel members. Unless they win a large plurality of seats, how do they intend to stay in parliament?

Freedom Lovin' Swedes

I love the Swedes.

I lived there for six months last year, what a beautiful country! Sure, they're a little socialist, but they sure do understand freedom of information.

suggestive pricing & speeds

(in US dollars)

100/100 megabits $9.95
500/500 megabits $24.95
1gbit /1gbit $39.95
10gbit 10/gbit $49.95 (obvioulsy, your biggest cost will buying the network equipment to support 10 gigabit connections & distributing it wire/wirelessly in your home).

That's why I switched

I support my artist by buying tickets for their tours. That's where most of their income comes from anyways. I don't feel like supporting a large corporation that had nothing to do with the music and giving them my money. I.E. you honestly think the vice president over at interscope really sits in the studio with lets say 50 cent. So until their business model changed I use the new site piratefan.org
