Symantec Deems AOL Traffic 'Malicious'
Botched update disconnected AOL users
(old news - 10:36AM Tuesday Mar 21 2006)
tags: security · software · Oddities
Symantec's Norton Security Suite began cutting some AOL (broadband & dial-up) users off from the Internet last week after a botched security update determined all AOL traffic to be malicious, reports Computer Weekly. Symantec discovered the problem and sent out an update - but alas, since the users were cut-off from the Internet, many couldn't access it. The Symantec support document can be found here.

Actually, it wouldn't be the first time Symantec did something stupid like this. All "we hate AOL" aside crap...

Norton AntiVirus and Symantec products used to be very good. Now these programs are used as tools against other businesses. Don't like the competitor? (who uses McAfee) disable them.

Symantec used to be good when they cared more about stopping viruses and at a reasonable price. Now it's all about the bottom dollar and getting that renewal.

IMO, Symantec became a POC after 2003.

Re: But...

OK, NOW AFTER ALL THE AOL BASHING, LETS TURN AND LOOK AT SYMANTEC'S PRODUCTS. I use Norton A/V, but none of the other crap, as I have often encountered major conflicts with other software, or mysterious situations like the above, where a Windows Update, or even Symantec update, kills internet connectivity. I'm not talking about 1 PC in a hundred, but more like 1/4 stop working until a System Restore or else netsh winsock reset catalog. I never had that problem before OEM's started putting their junk on every PC they sell. Now, you have to fight with someone and show them "YOUR CRAP IS CRAP".

I was wondering why my 200+ pieces of junk mail has slowed to 30 or so. Maybe not related....maybe so?

I've had to fix this 5 times already, and am staring at a box with Dial-up doing the update as we speak. It's so painful... damn you Symantec... Damn You!

Could this have also affected Netscape and Firefox? Starting on Saturday I was not able to connect using those two browsers. IE was working fine.

Ho hum.

While this is significant in that people were inadvertently cut off form online access, there is at least a little bit of delicious irony in the crappiest AV solution cutting off those who use the crappiest online solution.

Now that you're a robot, a good book to read is "I Robot" by Isaac Asimov. The movie was pretty good but it only covered one short story.

You would think these idiots would bother to test out patches with numerous system configurations to see if they actually worked first!

So what you're saying is, they should have verified that the real conditions and the actual situation was analyzed using real information by people who actually knew what they were doing, and who's primary interest was making sure the end result was true and accurate and did not reflect any personal bias?

I agree wholeheartedly!

Exactly. This type of blunder is unacceptable. I didn't cut McAfee any slack after their f'd up patch last week, so I certainly won't cut Symantec any slack either.

When you're right, you're right. In fact, this type of gross negligence should never be tolerated from anyone, ever. Further, the people responsible for foolish mistakes like this who are charged with the duty of making sure they DON'T happen should be held personally responsible when their incompetence affects so many people.

Re: Symantec = Fools

I stopped using Nortons Internet Security because of their blunder two years ago (less two months) when a botched update resulted in 50%-100% CPU usage when using any browser. Thanks to the great people here at BBR we found a solution in a couple weeks, took Symantec a month. This was one of the times that the people I know who never update their programs were lucky.

McAfee? You mean the same software maker that Comcast uses for their customers that routinely eats computer operating systems?

Like it has two of my systems and my roomate who is an IT project manager for United Health Care and has other companies like US Bank, Best Buy Corp, and the USPS under his belt? Or the number of other customers that had it on their system with the same issue? McAfee is a POC too and Symantec is no better. My god, when are these people going to stop being so corporate and start making software that works like it used to before they turned AntiVirus into a billion dollar industry?

I tend to dislike Synamtec for making overly bloated software nowadays, but I have to give them kudos for this one!

Re: Norton 1 - AOL 0

I switched from Norton to AVG 2 months ago. My PC is noticeably faster! As a matter of fact, I moved 3 PCs over to AVG. I haven't caught a single virus and my PC is much quicker. I'll never go back to that bloatware.

Oh yay an anonymous user saying he/she hasnt "caught" a virus... You might think that would be telling you something. Despite popular belief it is possible to get virus despite what a/v you use.

Man, it appears no one likes AOL lol. Not even Symantec. I think AOL should get a clue and just finally die instead of dangling off a hook till they croak.

They should "get a clue" because Symantec crippled their software?

Bravo! What an intelligent statement!

As much as some people hate Norton stuff, at least we can be fairly sure that the people testing the updates aren't using AOL. Thats gotta be worth something

I do feel for all those cut off, the sad thing is the AOL people will continue to use it. I am still having a nice chuckle from all this.
