The problem is quite simple- the large companies that have the financial resources to deploy such connections to cities also have massive rural and suburban areas that they have to serve, and prefer a one-size-fits-all (or as many as possible, at least) solution. The city-only carriers like RCN are too small to do anything, and are struggling to survive anyway.

I don't think it's a matter so much of the ISPs wanting to have a unified network. They don't want to have to justify why Town X isn't can't have gigabit symmetrical where City Y can, or even why Customer A can get it in a highrise, but Customer B across the street not in a high rise can't.

| You've got to be joking. You think it's difficult to become a legal citizen in this country? I have a great deal of experience in this area. I watch people who barely speak English get coached on how to answer the questions in the interview. Then they go in for their interview, and even though it's quite clear that the applicant truly has little command of the English language, and is simply reciting answers to questions based on rote memorization and no true understanding of American History or the structure of our Government, they're still easily granted citizenship.
Our process for granting citizenship is a joke these days. Sure, it make take some time. But these immigrants know how to play they game.

I especially love the [citation needed] part of the last sentence in Wikipedia.
I know a significant number of non-native Japanese who live there. All of them are either 1) exchange students, or 2) highly skilled workers (all tech-oriented). To which I say... so what?
We have both anti-immigrant and pro-immigrant attitudes in the United States -- and I would say say our immigration laws are too open. I'd like to see programmes like H1Bs seriously reconsidered; I have great qualms with how businesses abuse cheap labour. I can't "blame" the H1B programme for this, because the fault is ultimately with those businesses -- but we all know it's impossible to change a corporate mentality.
That said, as a Caucasian American who has great interest in Asian cultures (studied Mandarin for 5 years + lived with a Chinese family, and am currently learning Korean), I can assure you that said immigration discrimination (sounds like an 80s pop song!) does not upset me or make me think worse of Japan. Different culture, different history, different environment.

There is no cap on downloads as well which makes it all the much sweeter. The problem with uploads is that Japan's anime industry is in hot water due to the users uploading and seeding anime all day and night or else those caps wouldn't be there either.
It's our government that needs to step in and help the broad band in this country, not some crappy failed company like aig.

| Terabytes does not equal food Listen to all you talking about your TB's of saved shows and huge networks when we have people in the US that are homeless and children on the streets not getting enough to eat. Whats really funny to me is that for all those tv shows or movies recorded, you can only watch 24 hours of that stuff a day. Your life expectancy will shrink from lack of sleep and lol, I can stream for free most of what I watch for FREE! So enjoy wasting all that cash! As for me, 1 laptop, 1 s-video cable and 1 hdtv does the trick | |

| This article isn't completely true I would like to remind everyone who "wishes" they lived in Japan that our military men and women stuck over here in Japan don't have access to all this great technology. We could have this technology in the U.S., but the powers that be are simply too greedy to allow it. In Japan most people are more concerned about staying honorable and becoming better, back in the U.S. we all care too much about getting results now and being selfish. Population density has very little to do with the issue of FTTH when you think about it. | |

Plain and simple, if the bandwidth is available and there is a market for products that can take advantage of the bandwidth, people will package it and sell it. I can name many products that haven't taken off because of bandwidth limitations.
Most of the things that we now get on DVD or CD could easily be transported to us quickly over a pipe that large. There are many people that love the convenience factor (myself included) that would love to have a service that could essentially eliminate the need to have hard copies for copyrighted materials such as movies/games/software apps as well as the other streaming apps like HD IPTV and the works...the possibilities are endless!
