TDS Telecom Launches VDSL2 Service
$70 a month for 25/5 Mbps
by Karl Bode Thursday 09-Dec-2010 tags: business · TDS
TDS Telecom this week announced that the company is now offering a new VDSL2-based broadband tier that offers 25 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream for $70 a month in seven states, including Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, Vermont, Tennessee and Wisconsin. According to the company they'll be deploying the faster tier in 13 more states in the first quarter of 2011. According to the company's website, TDS has reduced the price of their 15 Mbps tier to $35 a month, and the price of their 5 Mbps tier to $20 a month. The company largely serves rural markets, but does offer fiber to the home in a few select locations (symmetrical 50 Mbps for $50) -- most notably markets where they're seeing pressure from municipal fiber deployments.

TDS owns a large part of US Cellular

TDS(a publicly held company) owns both 100% of TDS Telecom, and 80+% of US Cellular (the wireless phone company).
All of the above areas in the US Cellular coverage area.

Would love to see them deploy this in my area.

But how much of footprint can get those speeds

The real question is how many of their customers can even get those speeds? Distance from CO probably heavily limits those speeds to those near the CO.

Re: Hey TDS

all DSL is that way...stop crying over DSL when you can have it but your neighbor can't---or your neighbor gets it and not you....its all about the loop and the copper inbetween.

Re: Hey TDS

every service always has a controling company.

Phone: the local ILEC, Cable? The local MSO. It's a fact of business. Indie ISPs (Covad, Speakeasy and the other CLECs) had a chance to build out their network (and was required) but decided not to---it's not the IlECs fault that they didn't so you can only blame them not the ILEC.

Hrmmm..

Here in Michigan, all I'm still seeing is 2/768, 4/1 and 6/2 service. Of course, the fastest I could ever get was about 1/1 with their 4/1 or 6/2 service because of AT&T's crappy telephone quality...

Re: Hrmmm..

I have the exact same problem. I am lucky to get 1/400 on a good day. I am less than 2 miles from the State Capitol building and cannot get high speed anything. It is not like I live in the sticks.

BOO AT&T or Michigan Bell as is once was called. I think they haven't done anything except basic maintenance since the 80s.

Well thats nice and all...

But when will they be upping the speeds in the Metrocom division areas? I'm still sitting at 1/384.

vdsl(+?)

this PROVES that at&t is holding out on the upstream, theirs is what, 2-4mbits? might as well raise it, many cable companies are moving from 1&2 mbits upstream to about 5 even for entry level tiers.

TDS Download speeds

I'm a TDS customer in NH and they are charging me 49.95 for 7 mbs download speeds. For some reason right now are running at less than 1 mbs but usually run about 3.5 mbs. I would love to be paying less for faster download speeds. Maybe it's time to call TDS and see what is going on here. My guess is the infrastructure from the company they just took over in my area might not be all that great. But they have two substations less than 3 miles from where I live.
