Don't usually say this, but

decent job AT&T. I hope they go in to all the crappy clink areas with decent wireless. My parents are still stuck with 1.5m dsl when comcast has a few hundred m about 7 minutes away. Good wireless could help there, but not everywhere.

Re: Don't usually say this, but

What if Grandma only does email and looks at Grandkids' pics?

Why should she be forced into something more expensive?

Who said anything about forcing? I want more competition and choices.

Re: Don't usually say this, but

They will raise the price of the 1.5 mbps connection, forcing grandma to switch to fixed wireless. Then, after a year, they will hike the fixed wireless price and no longer offer the wired connection. Unless Centurylink or Frontier are allowed acquire the copper, this will be the most likely outcome.

Re: Don't usually say this, but

ATT will raise century link prices?

Ether way, that still better than letting the copper stay on life support any longer. Plus dsl rates raise yearly anyway, just like everything. Heck century link's slow dsl costs about what time warner's 50m plan costs in this neck of the woods.

Look we need a way off of dsl and its limitations, regardless of what it is will have the same effect as what you described(look at verizon in it's fios areas) thats no reason to hold everyone back.

Re: Don't usually say this, but

Ideally, we need DSL to be upgraded. Given that this is not happening, we need to at least ensure that DSL is not shut down. A fixed wireless alternative is welcome as long as a wired alternative is still made available. Unless FTTH is in place, a copper connection needs to be preserved.

Re: Don't usually say this, but

I disagree, wireless isn't as good as fiber, but modern fixed wireless is worlds better than copper. Just look at webpass.

Re: Don't usually say this, but

Webpass is not intended as a substitute for FTTH. It is for large buildings. At best, fixed wireless will serve as a temporary band aid while fiber is being deployed. However, I doubt that this "best case" option will materialize, this is why we still need DSL.

Re: Don't usually say this, but

Even everything but satellite beats dsl these days, its time for dsl to be replaced, and all but satellite can do the job. Fiber should be preferred, but eh if its not dsl or satellite it'll be usable.

Just read the Residential FAQ on Webpass:

»webpass.net/faq/residential/26
quote:
It's not economical for our customers if we bring Webpass into single-family homes. Therefore, we service buildings with at least 10 units.
Fixed wireless may work OK with dense environments, but it's not going to be just as easy for single family homes.

Not to mention, Webpass is starting to expand more fiber where they can. Fixed Wireless is a band aid.

Re: Don't usually say this, but

I agree its a band aid, but my point was its better than dsl. Heck even 4g is better. dsl should be replaced, and anything but satellite is better. Everything but fiber is a band aid, but most of its at least better than dsl.

Centurylink and other ilecs gonna get eaten

verizon (with the xo backhaul dea) and at&t want to become the telco duopoly as well as the wireless duopoly, so they've been hiding their fixed wireless initiative to nip other telcos in the bud and eat their markets as they struggle to upgrade their useless copper with fiber that is too expensive because they didn't develop a fixed wireless technology and wont have access to one until the 5g standards come out, and by then verizon and at&t can eat a good chunk of their territories. I say centurylink needs to buy sprint fast and jack some fixed wireless technology and use sprint's recovery to finance the upgrades, but frontier and fairpoint got tricked into buying tons of deadend copper and are now flat broke idk what they can do...

Re: Centurylink and other ilecs gonna get eaten

We have Century Link DSL and it does us just fine. At least the idiots have learned we don't want the whole package. Not interested in games and movies.

Now if Golf puts out a good subscription service a la MLB, we might have to think. Otherwise, Roku is good enough.
