T-Mobile 3G Goes Live In Philly
Staggered HSDPA deployment moves forward
by Karl Bode Monday 08-Sep-2008 tags: coverage · business · wireless
Users over at Howards Forums report that T-Mobile turned on their HSDPA network in Philadelphia over the weekend. T-Mobile recently launched the service in New York City, Las Vegas, Dallas and Houston, and a leaked launch list suggests that more than twenty cities should see service before the end of the year. T-Mobile will be the first mobile operator to offer phones featuring the Google "Android" mobile OS, with the HTC Dream dropping sometime this fall. Hopefully, the company can get a few more city launches under their belt -- lest they be assaulted by grumpy bloggers and users who suddenly realize a next-gen phone is only as good as the last-gen network it runs on.

Re: Los Angeles is scheduled for

I doubt that includes the GREATER LA area, maybe Downtown, Hollywood and the West Side may see it on the 17th, but I'd be extremely surprised to see it turned on in the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys.

Re: Los Angeles is scheduled for

Not that I don't disagree with you on this one... I remember AT&T's 'Los Angeles' debut that didn't go past Studio City for almost a year, and didn't cover west L.A. at all, or most of the San Fernando Valley.
Their rep did tell me that all sites have had 3G hardware for months now.. but haven't been activated, and the only place to be left out in CA will be Bakersfield.

map

Where is the map with 3G coverage? TM doesn't show it since its the worst carrier in the US.

Re: map

I just want to say they have the lowest 3G penetration, but they are not the worst cell carrier in the US IMO. I've had T-Mobile for years, and back in 2002 they weren't very good, but now, they have excellent coverage, price, and customer service.

Typical rant from Pat. Anything else new? Did T-Mobile deny you a line of service due to your credit history or something? Geez.

Everyone else released 3G maps, Verizon, ATT, Sprint, Alltel, what is T-Mobile's disfunction?

For T-Mobile to release a 3G coverage map would be more fair to its customers, than saying
this "market" has 3G coverage, please buy the service". Customer buys it, then goes home, its only at EDGE speed, and the Customer is screwed over since T-Mobile never gave him any warning where it would or wouldn't work. Also consumers thinking of getting T-Mobile can't since they can't judge where the service exists and where it doesn't.

I've never had, or tried to get T-Mobile service, but I've been eyeing it for a while as a dialup replacement for a no-broadband in the boonies friend if the coverage is ever built out there (only 5 miles from the nearest blotch of coverage). I don't believe in caps, so I won't go with Verizon or ATT 3G datacard service.

Re: map

So if you've never had T-Mobile, and have not even tried to get their service, how can you call them the worst?

T-Mobile was a pioneer when it came to releasing street by street voice coverage maps so I give them credit there.

Word on the street is that they will release data maps sooner than you think. Cut them some slack though. They haven't had 3G out long enough to cover all bases.

This site is still under construction, they have not started Upgrading the existing sites on any large scale yet.
I have been all around Philly over the Weekend and even Today.

I own both the Sony Ericsson TM-506(UMTS+HSDPA) and the Nokia 6263(UMTS), and there is no sign of 3G service from T-Mobile, up and down the I-95 corridor, I-476, US1, RT 202.

I even have the Nokia OEM Firmware flashed to my 6263 that provides a 3G indicator icon beside the Signal meter, but it's NOT ON because there is NO 3G Signal.

Maybe they turned on a single site somewhere, but that does not constitute a 'Launch' by any stretch of the imagination.

Their newest sites are being built to accommodate UMTS/HSDPA in the 1710-2100MHz AWS band, but the equipment has not been deployed yet by any large scale.

The Sony Ericsson TM-506 HSDPA phone was just released on Friday 9/5/2008, but it still only finds a 2G GSM/EDGE signal in the Philly area.

Anyone with pictures of 3G upgraded sites anywhere in the Philadelphia area, please post some examples here on BBR.

Thanks!

It is good to see T-Mobile doing more to play catchup to AT&T and Verizon.

tmobile 3g

well I am just here to let all the people posting here thinking that they know everything that many of you are wrong. I work for a company called zao telecommunications. We run all of AT&T's network and T-mobiles network. AT&T buys and makes us use far more advanced technology than T-mobile. There is NO 3G service for t-mobile even planned for philadelphia yet.
