T-Mobile 3G Launch By This Summer
CEO: 'Will be the best 3G network in the U.S.'
by Karl Bode Tuesday 12-Feb-2008 tags: wireless · T-Mobile US
Just yesterday we were discussing how T-Mobile still wasn't offering real 3G wireless broadband service, despite spending billions last year on spectrum for a UMTS network. Speaking with T-Mobile executives at the GSMA World Congress, CNET's Crave blog got the provider to state on the record that T-Mobile's 3G network will launch by this summer. They also took the opportunity to brag a little bit:

When I asked [CEO Hamid Akhavan] when the magic day will come, he didn't give an exact date but he did promise it would happen by this summer. Akhavan acknowledged that the carrier has had to work out quite a few spectrum issues...Akhavan assured us that the issues have been resolved and that the carrier is putting together a "robust" network that will kick off in major metro areas. He even went so far as to say it will be the best 3G network in the United States.

Actually having a 3G network to compete with Sprint's EVDO, Verizon's EVDO and AT&T's HSDPA networks would be a nice start. The company spent $4.2 billion last year for 120 1700Mhz licenses, but blamed Uncle Sam for taking their sweet time in vacating the spectrum.

Sprint/Alltel are the ones to compete with in 3G

"Actually having a 3G network to compete with Verizon's EVDO and AT&T's HSDPA networks would be a nice start."

You mean to compete with Sprint and Alltel EVDO as combined they have the largest 3G coverage by far, and only those two roam to each other. Verizon doesn't and has limits.

I wonder if T and ATT will roam 3G to each other?

I really doubt that AT&T and T-Mobile will roam in many areas as
1. They currently only roam in select areas on GSM today
2. AT&T doesn't have any 1700MHz 3G handsets
3. T-Mobile doesn't have any 850/1900MHz 3G handsets

NSA Use

I spoke to VP of Planning at CES who said the 3G was already in the ground but when they turned it on they were contacted by a "government agency that does not exist" and told that they had to turn it off as it was interfering with their surveillance gear.

So now just when I had made up my mind to switcth to AT&T and get an iPhone that's not hacked... this happens. Sigh.

who uses 3g?

Not me... I use T-Mobile, all I'm looking for is the phone. Their phones and plan options are OK, but I imagine that people who really care about broadband over cellphone would be using a Blackberry or iPhone.

If I did use a laptop for broadband, I think I'd rather have a card or something with ethernet out, instead of going through a phone... I think I'd like to be able to use the phone and 'net at the same time!

I like their mini-cell idea, but the coverage is good enough that I haven't needed it. I'm not adding much with this post, but thought I should comment since I use T-mobile ;p

Re: who uses 3g?

I've canceled my cable modem and use EVDO exclusively. Don't miss wired broadband, but am eagerly awaiting WiMAX.

Several million already have 3G laptop cards. There are at least 15-30 million who have 3G phones in the US alone, probably much more.

Who does? Plenty of people.

To me, it's hard to picture why a mobile itself would need 3G. Unless it's for video calls, but that's not for a long time. Few mobiles have the front camera (same side as the screen) needed for video calls. Of those that do, they are NOT cheap. Also every such phone available in the U.S. is unlocked, so you can't just go to the mobile phone store, and walk out the same day with one. Perhaps this will change later.

Although, 3G has benefits for the carrier. It allows for more efficient use of the spectrum. It's why Japan uses it exclusively. They have a lot of people in a small area, and most of those people have a mobile, so 3G is nearly a requirement.

3G as a method to connect to the Internet? Maybe. There are pros and cons.

Cons:
- More expensive than a wireline connection of similar type (residential grade, so no servers).
- The 3G isn't everywhere, so in those areas you have either 1xRTT or EDGE.
- Forget about VOIP and gaming. Latencies are horrible.
- Basically it's not a smart choice for a workstation.
- There's no option to run a server on 3G, as far as I know.

Pros:
- It's wireless, you can take it anywhere.
- Sure, 3G isn't available everywhere. But it's available in more places than just your home.
- Unlike mobile phones, there's no battery issue, as it runs off of your laptop.
- It's faster than dial-up or even ISDN.
- Unlike Wi-Fi, coverage is far better.
- Even in areas without 3G, you still have a wireless connection that's faster than dial-up.

I don't have a laptop, but if I did I'd seriously consider getting 3G for it.

Have you used Sprint's EVDO?

1. $49.99 a month for 2.4Mbps/1Mbps; the upstream is faster than DSL or Cable in many areas.

2. Its true that Sprint's EVDO isn't _everwhere_. However, it covers most urban and suburban areas, and many rural areas, too. I can get EVDO coverage in rural Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin, in areas where you can't get DSL.

3. Latencies are amazing. 5-60ms ping times on EVDO Rev A, and Sprint is Rev A nationwide.

That is amazing. I didn't know about Sprint Rev. A. I'd assume Verizon Rev. A. is the same, though the 5GB cap and other restrictions makes it unsuitable for laptop use.

It would seem that VOIP would be doable over Rev. A., even if it's not doable over HSDPA (I've heard round-trip latency for that is 300ms or higher).

Again, it's too bad the coverage isn't that great, but at least it covers some rural areas, giving access to those people.

I use 3G on my Smartphone and on a separate laptop card on top of my home connection.

I would die if I ever had to go back to using WAP or whatever that slow service was called

3g for latency

Although we may not be able to really utilize 3g without a laptop 3g would offer lower latency which would greatly help the tmobile phones. I am looking forward to a blackberry 8830 with wifi (h@h), gps, and adding 3g or 4g with free tethering. I have the 8320 but i almost hope my next phone leapfrogs 3g and goes to 4g. Might as well as 4g is so close already. TMObile could have the best 4 g network eversince they dont have above 2.5 g right now. come on tmobile wheres my 4g on 1700Mhz ?
