T-Mobile, Android Announcement September 23 HTC 'Dream' phone to ship October 17 Tipped by Chosen1
Google this week showed off their new Android OS at the Google Developer Day event in London yesterday, giving a slightly better glimpse at the OS interface. Meanwhile, VentureBeat says that the first phone featuring the new OS, dubbed the HTC "Dream", will be officially unveiled during a T-Mobile press conference on September 23rd in New York. The new phone will ship on October 13th and arrive in stores on October 17, according to sources. Combined with whatever Verizon is cooking up, next week looks to be an interesting one for wireless broadband.

Friend got an iPhone which I like better than my Sidekick3.

The iPhone is setting the standard for the mobile market.

I have a desk job mostly and when I am not, I will be back in front of a computer within a few hours. Computer screens are so much more pleasing to look at than cell phone screens. And with the typical price, it would have to replace my home broadband just like it almost replaces my home telephone. -- dnoyeB "Then said I, Wisdom [is] better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom [is] despised, and his words are not heard. | | | | Re: Still cant pull the trigger Some people require push email, which uses data, especially in a corporate environment.
Other people might want to use instant messaging on the go.
I agree that viewing websites from a PPC isn't the greatest and I don't care much for it, but its nice to check email download attachments, IM, etc.
I'm getting an AT&T Tilt today and there's no way I'm going to pay $50/month for their PDA Personal plan just to use the internet. The phone has WiFi and I plan on using that when I need the internet.

a) SSH client b) Terminal services client
I do remote support, and this is much more practical than dragging along a laptop.
Still - it is a bit expensive, and WiFi does work. I just wish that there were more WiFi/3G devices. -- Canada = Hollywood North

I don't know if I would use the word practical. Unless you're going to GUI'd environments, I can't see using a command line and being able to read the output on the phone and call it practical. Maybe useful if stuck in a jam, but there is no way I would 'leave the laptop at home' since I had the Tilt. -- I'll try being nicer if you'll try being smarter.

| | Move to other carriers Maybe by the time I need a new cell phone (which is a long while) Google's OS will have floated over to Verizon. But then again, why would Verizon use Google's software... they like to put on their own buggy, slow, limited software to cripple phones. Now, I'm not upset that much about it all, but there is definitely room for improvement on Verizon's part. A phone like the Dream would be an excellent phone to have if everything is unlocked on it (aka Wifi) and sold at a reasonable price. | |

EV-DO/WiFi phones are very rare for some reason... WiFi is less necessary on EV-DO but it's still nice to have. I would like to see something like the Dream/G1 on VZW, but I doubt it will ever exist- Sprint isn't even going to get the Dream, it will get a different Android phone (hopefully not called G2).
| | | | I am completely aware. The RAZRs from Verizon are notorious for being buggy and slow (I had one). And then the GPS crippled phones. If I could get a smartphone with WiFi, I would (and without having to pay for a data plan). | |
| | | EPS join:2008-02-13 Hingham, MA | Re: Move to other carriers Well RAZRs in general are notoriously buggy and slow, the CDMA RAZR moreso, and the Verizon RAZR the worst...
The only CDMA smartphone I know of with WiFi is the very new Palm Treo 800w, which is currently a Sprint exclusive. The BlackBerry Storm 9530 is believed to not have WiFi (probably troubles shoving it in along with both a CDMA chipset and a GSM chipset), though on Verizon (not sure about Sprint) you have to buy an email data plan with a BlackBerry anyway.
I think as time goes on it's going to be harder and harder to find a smartphone without having to pay for a data plan you're going to be sorely disappointed- all American cellular carriers have stated that they are counting on data revenue to help continue growth as the market moves towards saturation.
