T-Mobile CEO Demands End to 'Despicable' Practice of Overages

Earlier this week Verizon Wireless proclaimed that customers really don't want unlimited data plans, arguing that adoration of unlimited data was just a "gut feeling" that results in broken networks and dashed dreams. Rather unsurprisingly, Verizon found itself pretty soundly mocked by the Internet at large, consumers annoyed by Verizon telling them what they want, instead of simply giving it to them.

Click for full size
Last year around this time, T-Mobile launched a petition urging customers demand that AT&T and Verizon give up on overages and return to offering unlimited data. Needless to say neither company cared much about T-Mobile's petition, so T-Mobile CEO John Legere is back with a new blog post and video entry.

In it, Legere claims that "dumb and dumber" are hitting consumers with billions in surprise overage fees annually, part of the reason Verizon's so eager to insist that consumers don't want more value-oriented, unlimited plans. This will only grow as bandwidth intensive apps like Periscope become the norm, Legere argues.

"The carriers dirty little secret about overages is that they slam you for using your device exactly like you’re supposed to, and these penalties often hit the people who can least afford them," argues Legere. "If you’re going past your data limit, it’s probably because you don’t have a big data plan to begin with and are operating on a conservative budget."

Of course with a combined domination of 80% of the retail market and 85% of the special access (cell tower backhaul) market, AT&T and Verizon still don't have to care much what Legere thinks.

New form of advertising...

Pretty smart to advertise this way, I mean obviously this is more of a ploy to get people to switch to T-Mobile than a true desire from him to get Verizon and AT&T to change their practices. I am sure he is hoping they don't change.

AT&T and VZ are too stupid and blinded by their massive coverage to make such a ploy work.

McAdam and Stephenson will not change anything until the ship has long sailed. By the time they react T-Mobile and Sprint will have made great progress on their networks, closing the gap.

Besides, would you believe either AT&T or VZ if they were to do this? You know what would happen? 2 years later - no more unlimited, higher rates, etc.

HAHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Great progress on their networks...

PUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHLLLLLLLLLEAAASE!

In the last 5 years alone VZW has improved to fill gaps, and eve in the rural areas has moved to LTE...

tmetro and spistoostgin... have DONE NOTHING TO fill the same gaps they've had for 15+ years. Not one bit has changed. NOTHING.

BULL FEATHERS! The tmetro coverage has not filled in gaps that VZW has over the last 15 years. The same gaps they've had from the start are still there. And they won't fill them till the INVEST $$$ to put up towers to do so! Same sprigoostgin... if it were NOT FOR VZW they would have no coverage! Hell they are actually worse than tmetro in this case..

COVERAGE COVERAGE COVERAGE!

Doesn't matter what speed or price these two loosers have if there is NO COVERAGE. And crApTT and the dropped calls, garbled calls, or what not... NO THANKS. And that is with all the coverage you want.. still sucks!

I'll keep my VZW.

Well.. it seems you don't understand me so well.

I am for A STRONG VERY STRONG FCC. One with SOME HUGE TEETH AND BITE!

I am all for competition, have been since the 80's when I wanted to have as many crapble co's build in the township as I could corral. It did wonders to drag Adlephia then to get things done.

It still should be done. NO MONOPOLISTIC SINGLE BUILDS! Period. EVER. Put as much fiber on the poles till they bend or the ground wells up!

Multiple companies build networks, and multiple companies operate on them, possibly the same. At worst maybe it is time to REQUIRE 100% each village, town, city or waht not to build a fiber network to cover 100% of their jurisdictions and then let various companies operate on it to offer what ever data, video, phone, etc.. This is where that STRONG FCC kills off all the anti muni jerks..

As for healthcare. You have the rights to have all the healthcare YOU CAN PAY FOR! That is it. The government should not be in the healthcare business. Period, except for VA. And that needs a HUGE OVERHAUL, so maybe not even that!

FREE HEALTHCARE is NOT FREE!!!!! Just ask all those commie social countries about their tax rates! That is what PAYS for that FREE HEALTHCARE and other nonsense. I have no problem with making it law that companies offer healthcare 100% to 100% of employees. OFFER! Doesn't mean they need to purchase it. OFFER IT. BUT as for anything resembling OHIP or NHS.. NO *(@$(*!&$(!*&$(*@ WAY!

So you don't know me so well!

Have to feed the troll here. Countries like the UK pay less per head than you do, and everyone is guaranteed a minimum level of coverage. I won't deny that the NHS isn't perfect, because it definitely is not, but given the choice between the UK and US systems I'd go for the UK any day. Especially since UK private healthcare is actually reasonably priced if you want something to top up the state provision.

The fact that the NHS can more or less dictate pricing on drugs is a tremendous advantage. And since the drugs companies still sell to the UK, most have some sort of sales or R&D operation here, and some are HQ'd here, they can't be too bothered about that. We also don't have the ridiculous overheads that US healthcare has.

We know it isn't free, but it is "free at point of use".

Went from VZ to T-Mo about a year ago. One of the best moves I made.

Great coverage (for me), more data, less than half the price, wifi calling, unlimited music streaming, unlocked bootloaders.

Your little rant about Verizon being a superior network is funny because if you asked anyone in my area (Cleveland, OH) they would pretty much agree that Verizon Wireless is garbage. AT&T is better in my area.

Sure, AT&T's network speeds may not be the greatest compared to Verizon but at least I have better coverage with AT&T than with Verizon Wireless. More often than not I was on slow-ass 3G on Verizon then 4G LTE. On AT&T I have more LTE in more places than with Verizon.

Verizon may not be the best network everywhere.

Been there, no issues.

I've yet to find that in any area, ESPECIALLY in any area of the NE aka the former BAM areas.

A good network with useable coverage is not cheap. Would I love a better price, DAMN STRAIGHT! Would I like my NE2 back? DAMN STRAIGHT! Unlimited data back, DAMN STRAIGHT!, Rollback minutes BACK (thats right losers, BAM had that in the 80's! I had months worth of minutes piled up).

No amount of savings makes up for coverage when I need it to make a call, receive a call, or data. And I've been there done it enough when those around me have crappy or no coverage, and I do my thing and move on! I'll take that any day.

If a bird flew over my house I would drop a call on Verizon. I practically had to stand on one foot and whistle Dixxie in hopes that the call wouldn't drop.

I talked to Verizon and they said that my area needed another cell tower but they had no plans to install one any time soon. They confirmed that the tower was severely overloaded.

Seriosly Sprint may catch up on coverge for at least voice and text with slower data with the 800 spectrum. I was surprised I had native Sprint in a couple places recently and it was on 800.
Plus when the rural agreements start kicking in. If the rural agreements include the unlimited data that would be great.

Not a myth, perhaps if you live in the city, but where I live in Massachusetts, I can get acceptable coverage from all the providers except T-mobile. I hope it changes as I think they are doing some great things but if you are an on the road salesman and drive even on major highways through more sparsely populated areas, I found T-mobile to be the worst of the 4 in the Northeast.

The problem is that Deutsche Tekekom, whom owns T-Mobile US, is still partly owned by the German Government.

In the US, the marketplace is much more entrepreneurial and competitive.

Because of these roots, and being part of the German Government. it's worthwhile to think of T-Mobile as a branch of the government, similar to the Post Office.

Imagine if the US Post Office started an ad campaign featuring the Post Office General who says FedEX and UPS prices are too high. That's similar to the culture of Germany-based T-Mobile US brought to the US.

Still, companies are in the US market are here to make money for shareholders. Profits T-Mobile US funds Germany-based retirement plans and pensions for Deutsche Teleko's union-based workers in Germany.

Also, I read that this year, T-Mobile is going to pay John Legere what the CEOs of Verizon and AT&T make combined. That is very interesting, and likely why he was caught staying at the Trump Hotel last week. I guess if your rich, you can live in a hotel. However... Donald Trump said he threw Legere out of his hotel.

Some companies charge a little more, and invest into providing network services and providing a strong signal. T-Mobile US seems to prefer investment into hot air.

Re: New form of advertising...

This is all nonsense. T-Mobile has literally ripped and replaced most of its network in a time-span of 3 years.

3 years ago it was almost all 90's/early 2000's EDGE equipment. Now LTE is allover.

First you have to upgrade your existing network before expanding coverage...its hard to expand coverage when all you have is high frequency licences (although now with the 700mhz licences in some markets this will be fixed with time)

No. it just means you have to BUILD MORE SITES.... its called CELLular phone for a reason!, since those crap frequencies you have don't cover and penetrate as well as the old 870MHz A/B and the new 700Mhz. Yeah it means you are going to have to really work your site geometry to resuse the limited channels you have as the more you cellularize.

Can't agree with this at all.

I live in the UK. It's the fact that what were 4 out of 5 networks weren't wholly British that has made it one of the most competitive countries around for mobile telephony. Including T-Mobile UK, who when they were a separate network operator were fairly innovative in their own right (including industry leading 3G coverage through merging network operation and expansion with a competitor - 3 (Hutchison)

In fact, it's the merged company (owned jointly by Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom after T-Mobile UK merged with Orange UK; although BT are in the process of buying it) that leads on 4G rollout coverage and quality.

Deutsche Telekom is not owned or controlled by German government . German government has no more influence on them than on Ford . Yes, it was different- a couple of decades ago. It would be nice of the right wing propagandists got their facts straight.

P.S. In Germany, DT behaves almost as badly as Tea or Verizon in the US- You do not want any big corporate in any place to be in the driver's seat.

Hipocrite much?

Unless Legere is going to moderate his throttling rates up from the ambiguously defined but generally unusable "2G", to something more acceptable (or let us opt-up), and unless he's going to stop discriminating against tethering and hotspot use, I'm afraid his pitch is lost on me.

Speaking of change, is it just me, or did anyone else notice that Legere seems to be channeling Bruce Jenner?

don't even

don't even get me started on Verizon Wireless. I manage my company's business account for VZW. And they really do suck on their plans. I'm having our plan changed to get better rates and T-Mobile blows them out of the water. It seems like, to me, that Verizon took the bureaucracy of their landline business (a million options and plans) and applied it to wireless. I've never seen so many crappy, over priced options since i was a Verizon Landline customer.

I have execs that travel overseas and rack up thousands of dollars in data usage charges because the best plan VZW can offer me is 100MB for 25 dollars. Really VZW? Really?

And domestically, forget it. I can get twice the usage (400GB) with T-Mobile for half the price than I can with VZW. I can even go unlimited for a little bit more.

Unfortunately I do not have much pull with switching the account. But I'm going to get T-Mobile sim cards for exces to use when they go overseas. I think once people see how nice T-Mobile is, and that their network doesn't suck, we may switch everyone over.

I say keep it up John Legere, you're going to mop the floor with your competitors soon enough.

T-Mobile US isn't as cheap as it used to be

I have both T-Mobile US postpaid (grandfathered Unlimited 4G @ 70$/mo + taxes/fees) and Aio Wireless (2.5GB @ 35$ to 5GB @ 45$/mo, or 10GB @ 55$, no extra taxes or fees).

I used to get the Student Rate discount on T-Mo, bringing the after-tax fee back to about 70$/mo; now it's 79$/mo, plus, being grandfathered, I can't even go back and forth -- the newest cheapest Unlimited 4G plan is now 80$/mo, likely bringing the after-tax total to some 90$/mo -- almost 100$/mo for just one line!

I guess the extra money are good for the company, but consumers are the ones paying the price. I rarely go over 10GB/mo nowadays, especially since having to use Cricket, so, not sure it's justified staying with T-Mo anymore... My only hope is that with all this extra money they're getting, perhaps they can finally close those coverage spots now.

The hell with Verizon

The hell with Verizon.
When I left Verizon for T-mobile last year, My monthly Verizon bill with tax( and company discount) was $110 a month. For that ridiculous price, I was only getting a measley 2 gig of data and 700 anytime minutes and unlimited texts. One year later, I am with T-mobile and I am extremely happy. My wife and I and on the 2 unlimited lines(unlimited talk, unlimited text, unlimited music streaming services and unlimited data including free tethering) for only a $100 a month. This is a great bargain that Verizon can’t touch. T-service is very fast. I was in NY recently where T-mobile has Wideband LTE and I was pulling in 80 megabit down inside my parent’s house. That just incredible.
Of course, since I left Verizon they have lowered their price and is now offering more data. Too little too late.

If you can get T –mobile, try out the service. It’s a nobrainer.

OK T-Mobile guy

two HUGE differences

A)T-Mobile can throttle down speed. Lower 700c rules prevent Verizon from doing so. So if Verizon can't throttle like T-Mobile and they are suppose to get rid of overages, how do you stop people from going over? Say please don't go over?

B) T-Mobile's "unlimited" data actually has a 5 GB cap on tethering after which it is cut off. Not even throttled, straight up cut off. ( which is why they can offer "unlimited" data. No one is gong to use 500 GB a month just on their phone ) Once again lower 700c rules prevent Verizon from having a cap on tethering if data is unlimited and they also can't throttle data on tethering.

Heck Verizon tired to start "throttling" last year and everyone including the FCC had a cow. Now T-Mobile genius guy says Verizon should just throttle like him. Does he read the news?

So is T-Mobile going to have Verizon's back if Verizon asks the FCC to relax the lower 700c rules?

I demand TMobile to unlock their phones even if I don't have an account. ATT unlocks ATT phones as long as the phone is clean and not tie to any account. I demand Tmobile to have better coverage, why are there so many uncovered area in mountain time zone. Look at Verizon coverage blanketing nearly the whole US. I demand TMo bring back Carly as their spokesperson. I demand Tmo ...

Come to think of it, I'll just stick with MVNO that offers best value.

Absolutely not true!!!!! I purchased two AT&T branded phones within this year (by the way, I'm never buying carrier specific handsets, unlocked or not, ever again). I was told both in person at an AT&T store and via telephone that as a non-customer I MUST sign up for at least six months of service to be eligible for device unlock - again this is for handsets that I paid FULL UNSUBSIDIZED price for.

Legere is moron

Ok let's say all his wet dreams happened. Verizon and at&t either offered unlimited data or much higher caps with no overages and lower prices. Wouldn't that HURT T-Mobile? Say if Verizon's 10 GB $100 tier was instead 250 GB with 128 kbps throttling instead of overages( Verizon can't really throttle because the FCC says they can't do that due to lower 700C rules but for the sake of argument let's say they can ). Wouldn't the number of Verizon customers leaving for T-Mobile drop considerably? I'm sure his bosses in Germany are wishing he just STFU already.

If you take this statement: 80% of the retail market and 85% of the cell tower backhaul is owned by AT&T and Verizon, and then add the protected territory leased or owned by the same, it is easy to see how the two continue to collude to keep others out of the most densely populated areas. Until a radio airwave system is established in the mountains, cell communication will continue to be poor.

One February my cousin and I traveled 500 miles from central Illinois to Grand Lake in Oklahoma using 1-55, I-70, and I-44. I took my Sprint and Verizon phones. She took her AT&T phone. Verizon was no-fail up or back except Rolla, MO which is dominated by AT&T.

What we learned was AT&T dominates town and cities with state capitals, large colleges, large hospitals and dense population. Verizon dominates the state and federal highways. USCellular takes small rural towns Verizon and AT&T refuse. T-Mobile which is awesome in California, probably picks up the rest.

The other part of the equation is the phone and cell tower. The phone is only as good as the tower. A poorly constructed cell phone coupled with a weak signal is a recipe for disaster. A well constructed strong phone with a weak signal will be okay for talk but not much else.

I live in a very hilly area where cliffs are tall, forests are deep and traffic is sparse. A 3G /WiFi phone is mandatory for text and talk. .

CEO John Legere

If he truly believes in no overage, why does T-Mobile offer data stash plans. Run out of rollover... overages.

The plans don't charge overage. The speeds are throttled until the start of the next cycle. Might want to check your facts

Money grab

He is right that overages are a money grab. If VW and ATT simply throttled to 100 kbps it would not hamper their network. Throttling would solve VW claims of perceived congestion. Fining subs is more profitable.

While we're at it....

How about we end the despicable practice of padding profits under the guise of "compliance fees" ?
