T-Mobile Claims Fastest Mobile Data Network
According to vague, secret data by secret research firm
by Karl Bode Monday 20-Dec-2010 tags: competition · business · wireless · bandwidth · T-Mobile US
Tipped by Gbcue See Profile
A few weeks ago, AT&T released a study (but no raw data) funded by AT&T and conducted by Global Wireless, which proclaimed that AT&T operated the fastest wireless network, hands down. According to the study, AT&T's network was the fastest by "a wide margin," with competitors T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint lagging "by 20 to 60% in national average mobile broadband speed." Now T-Mobile, whose marketing department is punching a little harder than usual, has released a study claiming they offer the fastest wireless data performance in the top 100 U.S. markets. Interestingly, T-Mobile not only doesn't bother to offer any data, they don't even note who the research firm was:

Click for full size
T-Mobile now delivers the fastest wireless data performance in the top 100 U.S. markets according to results of a new, independent third-party study.1 In the study, T-Mobile’s overall network outperformed all other nationwide networks tested. . .The study results are based on national drive testing conducted between June 2010 and November 2010 by a leading third-party research firm, which downloaded and uploaded files to test data transfer speeds on laptop data sticks for each of the major carriers.

Neither AT&T or T-Mobile are "showing their math," so to speak and are keeping their test data confidential, though T-Mobile's latest marketing department effort has taken things to new, murky heights. Are we talking average speeds? Peak speeds? What about upload rates? You don't get to know.

AT&T and T-Mobile's almost-but-not-quite-scientific findings were (for obvious reasons) released right before Verizon launched their faster LTE network in a third of all U.S. markets. While Verizon's offering speeds around 5-10 Mbps, initial reviewers on a largely-uncongested network are seeing some speeds upwards of 20 to 30 Mbps. You'll note that T-Mobile's super-secret study stopped testing in November.

Yeah, it's not Catherine Zeta Jones, but I would definitely buy a phone from her. Or anything else, for that matter:)

T-mobile does that. Catherine zeta jones was another example.

This news is nothing different. At&t has pulled this off before. If your looking for mobile data, use things like dslr speed tests for help. I may get around 6000-7000 down 1500 kbps up on 3g here in chicago and seattle but someone in milwaukee may not.

I agree with that. The Motorcycle Pink outfit is not bad to look at.

As for the Speed of the network its hard to say. I now have T-Mobile and it obviously is much faster than Sprint 3G and VZW 3G. It seems to be at AT&T 3G and alleged 4G HSPA+, if it can be called that.

Now the big thing is it faster than WiMax and LTE. My G2 operates at a faster D/L here in Minneapolis/St. Paul than my boss Wimax Epic and Mifi Spot.

Until data is released who cares. The question of speeds will continue to be what market group can spin the facts to their carriers way.

dont know where your standards are at .. I dont think she is half as hot as most of the girls in the school I went to...

Anyways, back on topic ... I had T-Mobile for 3 years. Their network is stark slow and their agents are misinformed, rude and to talk to them you need to hold the line for an hour!!!

Take T-Mobile's "even more plus" everything plan - its $90. The same plan from H2O (shares ATT network .. .and this SIM card is available at best buy stores) - is for $50. Go to albertsons and look at the "gift cards" section. You will find some more providers - $50 for that plan using T-Mobile network. When I showed this to the tmobile store agent and told her they use tmobile network, her reply was "their network is bad, ours is good" ?!?!?!??!?!? Common sense FTW! And not only her, the whole store said the same thing.

Network: T-Mobile sucks. I didnt have reception in many palces where verizon had a clear reception.

Call drops: This is an everyday routine with tmo. Sometimes callers get sent directly to my voicemail. No, its NOT my phone's fault. Mine is an unlocked Nokia handset -and I used this in 3 continents (europe, north america, asia) and it works perfectly.

The positive points of tmo:
1. The mobile internet is $10 a month. Works on 3G.
2. Cheap international calls.
3. Better than ATT.

Re: T-Mobile Chick

T-mobile sucks where your at. They are perfectly fine in seattle, chicagoland, and western illinois where i go. Have not dropped a call in over a year. When i visit my family in tampa, i have no issue with dropped calls, speed, or anything down there either. This is on various devices. Mostly HTC or t-mobile sony ericsson or my european k850i sony ericsson.

T-Mobile signal just sucks where you're at. It's the same for me at the office (deep inside the concrete and steel dungeon), and sometimes in the boonies.

At least they're doing something about it such as WiFi calling for no extra cost -- unlike AT&T.

Network is fairly solid in Ohio as well. Also H2O uses TMO and of course they'll tell you that the H2O network sucks. They don't want you using an MVNO they want you as THEIR customer directly.

Simple mobile is also a t-mobile mvno. Same coverage as native t-mobile service. NO roaming. (Thats a huge loss. I wouldn't be shocked to hear that tmobile has more coverage thats roaming than native)

TMO does NOT cover anything outside of the metro markets that is a given and has been said for years. And they NEVER will. ATT is the same way.

There are areas they do but its not the norm. Usually covered by a roaming provider or coverage on major expressways. Where I don't have tmobile here, I do with att or other local gsm providers. But if you go to georgia, TONS of area with nothing.

TMO does NOT always roam. That is up to ATT. There are areas in Ohio where TMO NEVER roamed onto another GSM network until just now. You could pick up the T network in certain areas but only 911 calls were able to be completed. NOT actual voice calls.

Lol. no. I was in LA and moved to canada 3 weeks ago. ATT sucked in LA - their 3g was ... well worse than dialup.

TMO was also bad but I was stuck with them because I owned my phone.

In my opinion the best of the lot is probably sprint - since they use verizon network and doesnt tamper the phones. Also, verizon was the fastest I ever saw in wireless internet.

I understand most of you are GSM fans - in that case go with a TMO reseller. If you arent a GSM fan, then sprint / verizon ...

Re: T-Mobile Chick

Sprint had their own network and 4g is done in partner with clear. They may roam on verizon but that's not uncommon with the carriers. I've roamed on att's network quite frequently myself along with alltel's gsm network. (did that go to verizon?p

And I tried sprint here. They sucked here in chicago for data speeds, connection reliability, and crappy coverage in the more rural parts of the state where my tmobile phone worked fine.

On an interesting note, I use both Sprint and T-Mobile. While Sprint is relatively good, I still prefer T-Mobile hands down. Of course, that's always dependent on location. Everywhere I've been from Austin to Chicago has had pretty good TMO service.

Not the top 100 cities.

As it's been said once, I'll say it again.

T-Mobile is in the business to make money, not stretch their network paper thin (ala AT&T) to every corner of the country. As such, they focus primarily on major metropolitan areas and a wide surround.

If you have 800MHz spectrum in a market - then you will be deploying to many rural areas - its a requirement of having cellular / 800MHz spectrum (higher percentage of users per market requirement). 1900MHz (T-Mobile/Sprint/MetroPCS) carriers have a much lower requirement.

Pick a market where AT&T / VZW have only 1900MHz... their coverage is of that area is limited to more urban areas (think Northwestern California) - AT&T/T-Mobile/Sprint all have limited coverage. Cell carriers USCC/VZW cover most of it as a requirement of holding the cellular license.

Re: Claims

At&t is strictly 1900mhz where i go in illinois (galesburg, IL). Pretty poor coverage there. Most people don't use at&t there. It's mainly a verizon or sprint for them. More are switching to a local provider who offers gsm service. (Yay! Roaming provider for t-mobile i can use now!)

Given statement "Based on independent, third-party drive test data for Top 100 U.S. Markets(on a population-weighted basis)" they could have selected top 100 cities with fattes...er.. most weight-challenged population. And technically they'd be telling the truth

These discussions are pointless

All you get is people claiming to either agree or disagree with the results based upon their 2 year old experience with said carrier.

Then everyone chimes in with their anecdotal claim how T-Mobile only had GPRS data in their grandmas basement last year when they tried it last therefore the results are rigged or invalid.

In my area T-Mobile is the fastest but that's probably cause Verizon doesn't have 4G here yet, Sprint doesn't have 4G here yet and ATT's network is completely overloaded and overcapacitated. But that is the case with all carriers depending on your area.

Re: These discussions are pointless

I must not be in the top 100 markets. T-Mobile voice is OK, BUT the data service (supposedly 3G) is very poor. Strangely enough, about a year ago, it was fast and reliable. To get decent data speed and reliability, I have to go to the west edge of town, (Different Cell) or enable Wi-Fi. The problem seems to be location/cell related, and even thought the signal indication is 3-4 bars (4 is max on a G1) the data service is almost unusable.

I totally agree with you here! I have had a cell phone since I got my first one from Bell Atlantic mobile when I used to live in Plattsburgh, NY. I been with them since of course after the merge with GTE and Airtouch through the years. I work on the railroad that doesn't follow major interstates. Through all the years I have owned many different phones as technologies evolved. Worked with many other fellow workers on other carriers. To tell everyone the truth as far as cell coverage and 3g coverage nationwide Verizon Wireless is king! I currently working in Willard, OH with perfect 3g signal and a co worker here has no service with AT&T what so ever! But to tell you the truth the Verizon 3g in most big cities has really slowed in the past year with all of the infusion of all the droids but as far as I am concerned the coverage is what I consider a big plus. My two cents.

My T-Mobile connection is pretty good - I am almost dead center between NYC and Philly so that would account for the decent connection.

As for corporate telecom, I'll take that over government owned - if the government handled all facets of telecom, we'd probably still be using rotary phones with party lines and having to turn a crank. Thanks, but I'll take corporate telecom over that any day.

Re: 3G in NJ

I'm NJ too, 3G is spotty. Along with their poor voice signal indoors, I wouldn't use them if I had a choice. T-mobile drops more calls here that Sprint, Verizon and at&t. It depends on where you are. Everyone is not going to have same experience. The WIFI calling is a plus where I don't get a signal.

T-Mobile is desperate. They lie about having 4G. They have a tiny network. Even though their prices are lower, people continue to choose Verizon and AT&T over them.
