T-Mobile Confirms G2
'Limited quantity' pre-orders begin later this month
by Karl Bode Thursday 09-Sep-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware · alternatives
Hinted at for some time now, T-Mobile has officially announced the HTC G2 -- the first smartphone to operate over their HSPA+ upgraded network. The device sports a 3.7-inch screen, QWERTY keyboard, Snapdragon Qualcomm MSM7230 processor running at 800 MHz, 5 camera with LED flash and 720p video, Android 2.2 (Froyo), 4 GB of memory and a 8 GB micro-SD card. While T-Mobile made the device official, the couldn't be bothered to state its official launch date or price, only saying the device will be available for pre-order "in limited quantities later this month." It's the first U.S. smartphone to run via HSPA+ -- theoretically capable of speeds up to 21 Mbps.

Not a Snapdragon

The phone comes with an underclocked 800Mhz Scorpion Processor (Qualcomm MSM 7230) which is much faster than it's 1Ghz Snapdragon counterpart.

Re: Not a Snapdragon

They're still calling it Snapdragon:
Adding fuel to the G2’s speed is its Snapdragon™ MSM7230 mobile processor which combines Qualcomm’s new HSPA+ capabilities and second generation applications processor. The Snapdragon MSM7230 offers an 800 MHz CPU and is optimized to deliver exceptional performance, long battery life and leading edge multimedia and web browsing — with download speeds faster than other solutions currently in the market.

Re: Not a Snapdragon

TMO maybe calling it a SnapDragon but the model doesn't go to the Snapdragon.

Re: Not a Snapdragon

Odd. You're right. Qualcomm calls the MSM7230 something else. Why?

I cannot wait for this...

I want to replace my jailbroken iphone so badly but have been waiting for the G2 to come before making decision on an Android phone. I had the G1 and miss it dearly (lost it while on vacation in California last year). I really hope this phone is bad ass and runs stock Android.

Just get a nexus One and be done with it. I know a few people in Tmobile that have been trying this phone out for evaluations the last few months and I haven't heard many good comments. I head it feels really cheap compared to other phones.

Personally I got Nexus One on Tmobile and it works great, sure the screen might not be as nice as a Vibrant but it is a work horse and a flagship Android device so it will get updates first and has a lot of options.

Where can I get a N1 these days? Google already ran out of their last shipment. I would have loved to get a N1 since it can use almost all of the custom firmware avail.

The Google Android Developer store still has them, all you have to do is pay the $25 to get in then you can get one. Or hit up ebay and get one from there.

Pre-orders of limited quality?

I'm guessing its a type-o, but did anyone else notice the subtext under the article title says "'Limited Quality' pre-orders begin later this month"? If it is true, what idiot would pre-order the phone?

Re: Pre-orders of limited quality?

People like this guy who read too fast. That's a great scheme, when they bring in their HTC that only lasts 30 min on a charge, they can say "We said limited quality!"

It's most certainly a typo. The press release says "limited quantity". Guess Karl was typing too fast lol.

That would indicate a limited quantity, not a limited qua"L"ity (implying it's a crappy phone)

HSPA+ is "only" 14.4 Mbps

The G2 doesn't do the full 21 Mbps. It's fast, but not that fast.

Btw I had a chance to mess around with a friend's Samsung Vibrant last night. Speed tests of 3.5 Mbps down and 600 kbps up while travelling down I-70 out of Denver. I'm betting that when HSPA+ comes out that'll hit 5 Mbps. Sweet

Re: HSPA+ is "only" 14.4 Mbps

On my MyTouch 3G Slide I'm getting 5277kbps downstream, 1595kbps upstream here in Atlanta, with 64ms ping times. That's awesome speed on a phone.

If the G2 is faster, that would be really amazing.

You'll never get it. 21 Mbps is per cell, not per user...
