T-Mobile Expands HSPA+ Into DC, NYC
100 markets to see upgrade by year's end...

T-Mobile took their opportunity under the spotlight at CTIA today to announce that the company this week is pushing faster HSPA+ wireless broadband service outside of its initial test market of Philly. Users in both the New York City (including New Jersey and Long Island) and Washington DC markets should now be seeing the faster wireless broadband speeds (let us know in the comment section below). According to T-Mobile, the company says they'll be offering the faster speeds in 100 markets before the end of this year -- and the next market to go live should be Los Angeles. From the magenta horse's mouth:

T-Mobile successfully launched its HSPA+ network service in Philadelphia last fall providing customers access to one of the fastest and most modern wireless networks in the U.S. T-Mobile now has made HSPA+ commercially available in new markets including major areas of New York City, New Jersey, Long Island and suburban Washington, D.C., with deployment in Los Angeles coming very soon. The company will continue to aggressively expand the availability of HSPA+ in additional 3G markets, putting the necessary backhaul capacity in place to support the very fast speeds. Today, its 3G high-speed data network covers more than 206 million people.

T-Mobile says they should have about half of those 100 planned markets up and running by mid year. The total upgrade should cost T-Mobile between $200 million to $300 million, according to executives at CTIA.

OK

I am in Houston area and they promised to make HSDPA 7.2 available by last Christmas and yet we are waiting. I will believe it only when I see it is working.

Did you actually try to see if it's working?

T-Mobile has a large area of Houston covered with 3G, as you can see above.

Re: OK

Yeah, we have 3G and for more than 2 years in Houston. I was talking about 7.2 speeds, and it is not here yet. Although they did upgrade the infrastructure to support the speeds. But I am not sure when they will be turning it on.

Re: OK

chances are they need to get the backhaul upgraded then.

All TMO 3g towers are 7.2 upgraded. They just don't have the backhaul to support faster speeds. A technicality for sure, but them's the facts.

I think every customer has HSPA..but not all have the backhaul to support the speeds. We have it here..but don't have the backhaul. I know because my rooted Nexus One phone shows "H" when I send heavy data then goes to "3G" and so on down the line to E. (Edge)

I guess from my understanding T Mobile is upgrading to HSPA+ instead of HSPA 7.2 now.

How about bringing 3G to the rest of your service area first?!!!?

No kidding. I'm betting it'll be a year before Golden, CO (rigth outside Denver) is fully covered, and three before Frebericksburg, TX gets service.

TMO is continuing to expand their 3G footprint into formerly EDGE territories. The area around Madison, Wisconsin is one example.

behind sprint..

tmobile is losing customers at least at the rate of sprint and this is because of the lack of real price cuts and upgraded services. this is too little too late especially in very competitive ny metro.

orly? Last I checked, Sprint has been losing customers for years. TMO's only customer loss (so far) was Q3 last year.

Re: Speed results

That's more like what a 'typical' 3.6Mbps connection will get.
I've only twice beat 3000kbps.

Before AT&T's 7.2 upgrade my speed's were only around 2000kbps but now it's hovering around 3,500 down and 1000 up on my Nexus One on AT&T. If the backhaul was competent then the speed's would be around 5-6mbps.

Philly Service

Philly service is awesome, consistently get 5mb/s and above download speeds on my nexus one, just wish it had the 21 mb chip in it. Unfortunately my job takes me both towards center city and away, so I see both sides of T-Mobile coverage. GPRS signal is a real buzz kill.

What to look for to determine if a particular phone has a 21Mbps capability?

Lemme help you out: It doesn't.

There are no 21mbps capable phones in the USA right now.

There's only one device that supports T-Mobile's HSPA+, the T-Mobile webConnect Rocket data device.

My N900 supports HSPA+ just fine, granted you can't get a subsidy for it but the no contract plan savings pays for it in 2 years anyways.

It is however hardware limited to ~10mbit, the same cap it has on wifi. I think you will find similar limits for awhile given current available chips that have to get by with an ARM cpu and a cellphone battery.

The webconnect "cheats" using the laptop cpu/usb power, although I wouldn't be suprised if some anemic atom netbooks can't handle full rate during actual use either.

(I also knew I wasn't crazy seeing the 3.5 icon around greater I495 starting in Feb)

Edit: Apparently the alphabet soup of GSM standards is not quite so clear, but if you're going to nitpick like that then "true" hspa+ is a lot more than 21mbit and nothing qualifies. My main point would be there are a handful of >7.2mbit phones (3.5G) that can be used in the US already, the network upgrade applies to more than dongles.

Bad coverage + = still bad coverage :(

I understand T-Mobile's desire to get the "speed demon" crown but...
- Their network in some areas still sucks (and I'm being gentle here ), it'd be better if regular 3G was working everywhere
- They're lucky that Clear isn't in those areas yet (though there were rumors of expansion in NYC) or that HTC Evo + Sprint would pretty much beat them into pulp.

Oh well. PR and marketing...

Yeah, i will never switch to T-mobile because their network is the worst (tied with Sprint/Nextel).

But they do have some awesome phones. The HD2 just got released a few days ago. Amazing phone, probably the best in the market right now.

Their customer service is pretty good also.

If only they invested more money into their infrastructure.

Seen it in a couple places that are a good bit west of DC, at least as far out as me in Manassas/Dulles

(seen it meaning 3.5g service, speeds = nothing specific yet)

Philly HSPA+

Getting 8-12 down here with HSPA+ on T-Mo. 3G footprint is very large around Philly Area. I live 40 miles west of Philly in Chester County and I have 3G including HSPA+. If I recall, all new 3G installations will include backhaul required to support higher HSPA+ speeds. Service is great here in Philly and surrounding suburbs. Less gaps than Sprint and both better sound quality and less dropped calls than AT&T. Only weakness is lack of service under ground in the train station while making the hour commute into Philly for work. Both AT&T and Verizon have service down there. Everyone likes to complain about T-Mo but truth be told, they simply don't have the cash to upgrade as fast as Verizon or AT&T but I feel with the cash they do have they are doing a great job. They have the best phones (short of IPhone), best value plans for larger carrier and best customer service.

4Mbps+ in Jersey City, NJ

I saw ~4Mbps down in Jersey City, NJ two days ago on my G1. I'll post some more bandwidth test results when I'm back there tonight.

Of course, my G1 isn't an HSPA+ device, but it does have HSDPA 7.2Mbps, so those speeds aren't out of the question if the signal is good enough (pegged in my case), there's little congestion (it was 2AM), and the backhaul is there (it seemed to be).

Re: 4Mbps+ in Jersey City, NJ

There is no real need for a HSPA+ device until the Q3 handsets start coming in. Average user speeds expected are to be ~10-12 Mbps.

I have an HD2 and would be more than happy if I could have 5 Mbps by the end of the year. Wouldn't mind trading that overhead for better latency and stability.
