T-Mobile Gets a New CEO
Company Hires Former Global Crossing CEO John Legere
by Karl Bode Wednesday 19-Sep-2012 tags: business · wireless · wireless
T-Mobile has found themselves a new CEO. The company today announced that they're hiring John Legere, who has spent 32 years in the industry -- most notably as the former CEO of Global Crossing. Back in June former T-Mobile CEO Philipp Humm resigned, having successfully completed his foresworn duty to navigate the SS T-Mobile directly into the giant iceberg known as the failed AT&T merger. Jim Alling, who had been serving as interim CEO since Humm's resignation, will be returning to his position as T-Mobile’s Chief Operating Officer. Legere takes the helm of a precariously perched carrier that has been engaging in significant layoffs as it tries to keep pace with AT&T, Verizon and Sprint -- with an LTE network build looming on the horizon.

New CEO good choice; but success depends on DT plans for TMO

Legere looks like a good choice for CEO. But he can only be successful if the parent company Deutche Telekom lets him. The future of T-Mobile depends on what DT's plans are for the company. If they want expansion and profitability, I think Legere can do it. But if he is limited to finding a way to dump T-Mobile at a good price and nothing more, then T-mobile will never become competitive in US market.

so true, DT's can pull the plug on any profits if they so do wish, and Legere cant do or say anything about it, T-Mobile has improved and I hope they continue to improve but the fact of the mater is that DT is over their shoulder at every moment and holding back on anything that T-Mobile wish they could do, I'm surprised that they allowed T-mobile to spend 4 billion or so on their network.. I just hope its enough. Cause we all know DT def wants to sell this and if they cant now they will next election...

Here is what the new CEO has to say about his plans for T-Mobile:
»news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-575161···1_3-0-20

T-Mobile continues to face challenges in catching up to its rivals and slowing down the loss of its most lucrative contract customers. A few months ago, the carrier set out a new roadmap to upgrade its network, move to 4G LTE, and introduce more aggressive mobile device plans as it works to curb its losses. Legere doesn't intend to mess with the plan, saying that he wants, rather, to simply add a "maniacal focus" on execution.

That includes bringing back the "coolness" factor to T-Mobile, which he believes the company still embodies and which has allowed it to stand out from its larger competitors.

While critics have questioned T-Mobile's spectrum position and Deutsche Telekom's commitment to the business, Legere believes both are much stronger than perceived. Between the spectrum it got from AT&T from their failed merger deal, to the airwaves it plans to purchase from Verizon Wireless following its cable deal, T-Mobile has a swath of spectrum "that rivals anybody," he said.

I think they should focus more on improving coverage more than worrying about LTE at this time. Does not matter if you can download at 20MB/sec in one area but have EDGE in the next. Consistency is key here.

LTE should give a little better coverage.

While I don't like it, I'd say switching to LTE is needed for marketing reasons. If they don't switch, people will jump ship just because every other carrier is running LTE. It would make TM look like they were not "upgrading" their network.

Re: New CEO good choice; but success depends on DT plans for TMO

You make a good point considering most sheep who talk about faster services only purchase a new phone with LTE services because it has 4G. Yet they have no clue how it benefits them or what they can use it for.

I still will go with coverage first and speed later because not only should it be easier to improve on coverage with a network that's already in place but they will know how to properly setup the LTE network right after with those same coverage improvements.

Major cities will see the biggest benefit for LTE when it comes down too coverage and speed because of the amount of users per tower.

T-mobile is still a guessing game for me though, you never know how they will swing.

And there is the issue. Both T-Mobile and sprint have the potential to be so much better than they are. Yeah...but they won't.

Let's see...

I hope his idea of turning the ship around isn't more like backing it up to hit the iceberg again. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves me wrong. I like TMO. I really do. I've been a client for years now, after multiple issues and lies got stacked up as abysmal treatment by VZW (who before they became VZW, had my business for 15 years). TMO's customer service has been stellar. Let's see it stay that way or improve.

Agree. I'm on T-Mobile's network here and I have few issues and like the coverage and service. Most the area is HSPA+ but there are some 3G or even 2G areas. It's very rare I hit an area where there is no signal for data, and in areas where I originally noticed it it appears to have been "fleshed in" now and they have service too.

Illinois has a LOT of gprs areas. a LOT. They barely even cover the bigger cities like Peoria with 3g.

Re: Let's see...

Yeah, they have areas that lack.

Verizon and AT&T have the best coverage networks but even their networks have deficiencies in some areas. Sprint and T-Mobile have a lot more, but it works well for me here.

I sure hope they don't pack up.

Definitely. Several smaller cities down here (less than 23,000 pop.) are still stuck on T-mobile's 2G network. It's aggravating because a few miles east of where I live, 3G and 4G are both available.

There are simply too many areas around here still on the old 2G network. On top of that, I think, at least around here, their network is running at nearly full (or over full) capacity. Even at 4-5 bars my download speeds are less than 60 kbit/sec, typically around 35 kbit/sec. Very disappointing when their network runs magnificently when I'm out of town.

I chose t-mobile because of one of their attractive prepaid data/voice plans. Shame on me for thinking they had good coverage all over the area though. Verizon and AT&T seem to rule the roost here or so it seems. Both of them have 4G everywhere on the coast but T-mobile is still stuck on 2G. Lame. What's even more depressing is that there's a T-mobile booth here at the local mall, advertising 4G smartphones and people actually buy from them. I recall seeing a few angry customers too, heh.

Is that the best they can do?

Somehow, recycling John Legere back to the top of a telecom seems like a questionable move.
Yes, he has experience, part of which was riding Global Crossing down from it's peak to bankruptcy.
The factors invovled weren't all his doing but he never pull out of the nose dive either.
surely there are equally qualified execs avaliable without the negitive history attached.

Your sentiments and concerns mirror mine exactly. For those not familiar with the situation / what tshirt See Profile is referring to, please read: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Cro···y_filing

Putting this guy back into the head seat of a cellular company seems like a really, really bad move. Of course only time will tell, but as any of us actual "blue collar" workers in the industry know, shitty CEOs have a tendency to repeat history over and over and over as long as it continues to benefit themselves; a realm where type-A personalities run amok.

Best Wishes

I hope Legere and TMO make it happen.

After reviewing equipment, plans and coverage of the four wireless companies with a national footprint, I found myself liking T-Mobile best. My wife and I are considering switching. If we didn't have a $120 ETF on our current carrier hanging over heads, we probably would've done it by now.

doubtful, they need more people on their network to make a profit.. other wise what good will it do?, T-mobile problem is not enough people for their coverage

iPhone

THey also need to fix this Apple feud and get the iPhone. If a low credit carrier like Cricket can get it, so can T-Mobile. This is a saving grace, though some of you may not like the iPhone, it shows that T-Mobile isn't "good enough" for the iPhone.

Still will suck

T-Mobile will still suck Why?

-Unlimited 4G = Unlimited congestion just like Sprint.
-Poor coverage that will never change just like Sprint.
-Crappy customer service that outsourced and doesn't care.

I had T-Mobile Prepaid NEVER again.

Verizon IMO is still the best Wireless provider due to the coverage and not allowing unlimited 4G. Only reason why they are better.

>I had T-Mobile Prepaid NEVER again.
Did you get one of their low priced 4G phones like the Exhibit II? When I signed up for prepaid in January the Exhibit II was the best one they had and I though it would be great. It does work well on wi-fi but it doesn't get 3G and they don't have much 4G coverage so there was no data anywhere, just Edge. I upgraded to a better phone, the Galaxy S-2 and it works great. BTW, one of the firmware updates changed the display on the phone so it only says 4G all the time now even if you are on 3G so it looks like 4G all the time. 3G can be as fast as 7Mb though so it still works well in most places. There isn't any congestion on either 3G or 4G as far as I can tell.
