T-Mobile HSPA+ Hits 19 More Cities Next Week
As well as a redesigned webConnect Rocket 2.0 USB modem
T-Mobile continues to quickly deploy their faster HSPA+ upgrades, which theoretically provide speeds up to 21 Mbps -- though in the real world users report speeds somewhere closer to 10 Mbps. The news dropped yesterday that T-Mobile's about to expand this software upgrade to an additional 19 cities starting on July 21, including Cleveland, Austin, Baltimore, DC, Portland, Hawaii, and Minneapolis. T-Mobile's also supposedly getting ready to offer a newly redesigned webConnect Rocket 2.0 USB data stick on July 21st as well. They're also going to be continuing the trend of offering subsidized netbooks, and will start selling a discounted Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook in select HSPA+ markets.

10 mbps still not shabby!

That is amazing, to me. More than 3 X faster than my home DSL connection.

Explain your logic...keeping in mind this is for a 3G wireless service.

Backhaul?

The question, will T-Mo have enough backhaul in place to support it? I've read elsewhere that here in ICT Cox is providing backhaul from T-Mo's towers to support Plus. Apparently T-Mo has been striking backhaul agreements with cable operators all over to get this up and running. I guess multi-carrier T1 just isn['t cutting it anymroe.

Re: Backhaul?

T-Mo was using 4xT1 in some markets to backhaul HSPA 7.2. For HSPA+ they're using whatever big b\w they can find, seems like.

Where did you read about Cox being a b\w supplier btw? I've heard that T-Mo is using Zayo for bandwidth in markets where that company has a presence.

Hmm, wonder if, with cheap enough bandwidth, T-Mobile would be willing to upgrade their GPRS network (yep, not even EDGE) in my hometown to HSPA+.

Re: Backhaul?

TMO has deployed 3g in numerous areas that previously only had GPRS (I can think of some areas of California). It's pretty likely - assuming they can get the bandwidth.

And yes, they're using Zayo where possible.

Hmm, I wonder who I need to call to get that sort of thing going? Pretty sure they could get $15/Mbit bandwidth here without any problem...

Re: Backhaul?

If you have TMO, just call 611 and complain to Customer Care.

Re: Backhaul?

lol, and they're going to do that for one customer (I do have a prepaid account, and wouldn't mind getting a Vibrant on Even More Plus). Thing is, not a lot of people use T-Mobile here because

1) No local numbers
2) Coverage is lower than everyone except CricKet (though there's a BIG difference between the two)
3) Data is slow

Re: Backhaul?

Uggh. Yeah i'd avoid TMO too, lol. TMO has 3g in dozens of places along I-70 between Denver and Grand Junction. Their coverage map shows 3g bumping up against Golden, but since you're on the fringe of coverage maybe upgrading a single tower up in Golden could expand 3g coverage for you. It's not like you're that far from denver.

Maybe if you can create some ski slopes on your property they'll get you 3g!

Re: Backhaul?

Okay, so my profile location may be deceiving. Golden is where I go to school, and there's a smattering of 3G in town, though it's mostly EDGE. Where I hang out the rest of the time is in the TX hill country, which is what I was talking about on the $15/Mbit bandwidth side. AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and CricKet all have 3G in town, however both local carriers (West Central Wireless and Pocket Communications) are non-3G and T-Mobile doesn't even have EDGE, though T-Mobile GPRS is actually faster, last I checked, than WCW's EDGE (though with WCW you can get a voice signal ANYWHERE).

Get less spotty coverage

I live in the 7th largest MSA in the United States. However, T-Mobile coverage before 3g was spotty. Now I am told and have seen firsthand 3G service is very spotty. Contrast this to AT&T where I get 3G service 99.9% of the time.

Re: Get less spotty coverage

Can't be perfect everywhere. In fact, TMO's network in the southeast is notoriously weak. ATT's is understandably strong since there considering the prior presence of bellsouth.

I live in the 18th largest MSA and service has been stellar. I've also lived in the 29th and the 4th largest, and service has been great for me in those cities too.

As always with cellular service - YMMV.
