T-Mobile HSPA+ Upgrade Expands
75 Million covered by June's end, says company

T-Mobile this morning announced that the carrier is pushing faster 21 Mbps HSPA+ wireless services (which usually sees speeds closer to 10 Mbps) in a significant number of new major markets, including Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston and Seattle. According to T-Mobile, the upgrades are available in more than 25 metro markets, and the company plans to have the upgrades cover more than 75 million Americans by the end of June. "T-Mobile has rolled out HSPA+ service to more than 25 major metropolitan areas in four month’s time, as we drive towards having the most pervasive mobile broadband network delivering 4G speeds in the country," says the company, again arguing that their 3G service offers speeds comparable to 4G. Recent comparisons with Mobile WiMax would seems to make that true -- for the time being.

Re: Great,

Are you saying that ATT's coverage isn't even good near the interstates? That does seem to be the case. My best friend's iphone drops calls on his commute home pretty frequently. It must be the interference from the interstate.

The iPhone is the reason for the dropped call's. It's the worst phone for making/receiving calls. Depend's on the market where your at. All my dropped call's went away when I switched phones

No, but I live in the 3rd largest city in the US. I see iPhone users complaining everyday that they are dropping calls and they can't get reception in buildings downtown. I have T-Mobile and I have coverage everywhere. I can even make phone calls on the subways. Not so much for iPhone users.

While it's not perfect, T-Mobiles quality and footprint in the city of Chicago far surpasses AT&T's. That's been my experience at least.

Re: its a give and take in chitown

I have both ATT and Tmobile ( one for business and one for pleasure) and in Chicago its really a give and take there have been times Ive gotten full bars from TMO and the ATT signal was 2 bars and then in the SW, W, & NW burbs its almost the opposite. ( PS: I have a house in Orland Park). In Kankakee (1 hr south of Chicago) ATT kicks TMO butt but there coverage maps are almost identical. However TMO may do better in Big City areas, as I have noticed but outside of that its horrible, Florida is a great example. while driving through many un urban areas my TMO b.berry was SOS but ATT b.berry was still kicking.

Took a Amtrak train trip in Jan 2010 on the Silver Meteor from NYC to Orlando and 50-55% of the time my Tmobile phone was SOS my ATT phone was only SOS 20-25%. so Yes Tmoble coverage overall is worthless compared to ATT. Id expect Tmobile if your not going to build more towers where needed to fill in the gap at least work out a roaming agreement with ATTs for tower rights. Its outrageous if there was an incident and I can not call out because Tmobile has no tower in the area, yet the person next to me has ATT and is talking away, and were both on GSM networks with quadband phones.

Compare a different phone, the iPhone SUCKS for making calls!

Thank you for looking that up, but they don't cover my exact address. I'm 7 miles outside of town, in foothills. I called TM last week and verified they don't cover my address. They offered to check into having a tower at my home, I'd happily have one added. We'll see if they call me back. I can't see my neighbors loving this idea and two are within 500 feet. I seem to remember some law about that.

Hopefully they won't put up too big of a tower so the declination of the antennas won't miss you by being too close, though I don't think that's as big of an issue on lower frequencies as with WiFi-esque gear...

Phones and Coverage

1. T-Mo needs to launch and promote a phone that can hit full HSPA+ speeds. I hear that the Xperia X10 can do this, but I'm not 100% sure, because people have been showing me MobileSpeedTest results and those aren't worth crap.
2. The carrier needs to enhance coverage in areas that have their service but are stuck on GPRS. If they hit the TX hill country with 3G+ they'd become, by a long shot, the fastest wireless carrier in the area. They *would* have to use some wireless backhauls and such, but bandwidth is cheap if you know where to look.

Looking forward to testing out their 3G+ when it comes to Denver. At that point I *might* be able to justify the cost of buying a Rocket outright and paying for webConnect service on top of that. The mobile industry is going too quickly for me to justify buying into a two-year contract with anyone right now.

They don't need HSPA + phones quite yet. All current inventory will greatly benefit from increased backhaul even if they aren't HSPA + capable.

T-Mobile currently sells more phones that are capable of 7.2 Mbps as it is than any other US carrier.

All Android phones they sell can max at 7.2 Mbps as does their HD2 and the Nokia e73 can peak at 10.2 Mbps.

T-Mobile is coming a long way from where they used to be. I hope they succeed.

Not all of us live in swamps or rural mountain top communities so these upgrades should benefit the majority of us.

Re: Phones and Coverage

I live in neither and IMo doesn't have more than GPRS in my area. As for the company not needing faster phones, I won't disagree about the number of 7.2 handsets that they have available. However they need something that can max out faster than the .Evo in order to effectively compete with it. On the high end, price isn't everything

Re: Phones and Coverage

According to some recent speed tests between Sprints 4G (Evo phone and their USB stick), their "4G" speeds were about the same or slower than T-Mobiles HSPA+.

So any phone that can take full advantage of 7.2HSPA is already on par with the EVO. Marketing aside, the numbers show 4G isn't all that super-de-dupper yet.

Re: Phones and Coverage

I agree that 4G has been crap on the Evo in areas where the network isn't built out. However in good areas 4G can hit 10 Mbps, and as time goes on there will be more and more of those areas, all without having to upgrade phones...

Great News!

Again, no word from AT&T's "planned" HSPA+ upgrades while other carriers are passing them up left and right in terms of speed, capacity, and coverage.

AT&T has said that they'll be hitting 14.4 Mbps with HSPA+ later this year, with service covering 190+ million people if I remember correctly. I want to say the story was on RCRWirelessNews.

Re: Great News!

AT&T will just release another PR stating that some independent agency (that they paid) is proof that they have the fastest 3G network. If that doesn't work, they'll blast the airwaves and TV networks with as many ads as they can before they get sued for lying.

Exactly! This still won't stop the AT&T or Verizon trolls from claiming T-Mobile has no service off the interstates in Alabama etc. but all that means is more bandwidth for you and me.

Backhaul

I wonder how much backhaul Tmobile is providing to their 3G+ sites?

I found Clearwire is apparently doing 30-40Mbps for Microwave fed sites and 100Mbps (possibly more) for sites that can get landline.
