T-Mobile Launches VoLTE In Seattle

AT&T this week announced that they're finally launching higher-audio quality voice over LTE (VoLTE) service, even if the launch is in a handful of markets on only one device. Not to be outdone on the PR front, T-Mobile today announced they too will be launching VoLTE in their own, limited way. According to the announcement, T-Mobile is offering VoLTE via the LG G Flex and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Light for users in the Seattle market.

As with other carrier VoLTE implementations, T-Mobile's deployment promises not only improved audio quality during the call, but faster overall setup and connection times for all calls. T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray offers a deeper explanation of how the technology works:
quote:
VoLTE calls will be carried over IP on our LTE network instead of a circuit-switched path on our 4G HSPA+ network. This is advantageous because your phone stays on our wicked fast LTE network to make a call. The tricky bit in all this is the smooth mobility between our various radio layers. Enhanced Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (eSRVCC) is a new LTE Advanced function and we’re excited to be the first to deploy it in the U.S. All of this basically helps ensure that your capable phone won’t drop a call if you leave an LTE area and it switches to 4G HSPA+ or 2G coverage.
T-Mobile states additional VoLTE markets will be launched through the rest of the year. We'd be interested in hearing from any AT&T or T-Mobile user able to give this week's VoLTE launches a quick look (we'll pay for a good write up).

Volte in boston metro.

They have been testing this in boston metro for a couple weeks now. it seems to only be certain towers outside boston, but my note has had the volte icon for a couple weeks.

firmware N900TUVUDNE6 apparently added the feature for volte

Can you tell any difference? I thought I read that the firmware update required was released today.

its been available on the pc sync app for 2 weeks now... or at least it was for mine. To be honest it sounds the same to people not on tmo , but between 2 tmo users it sounds great. i do get a drop though if I roam from a volte tower to a 3g tower, which happens every morning on my commute.

Because both lines have to have VoLTE enabled for it to work otherwise your just using the regular network.

Re: Volte in boston metro.

yes , but even to another non volte user on tmo it sounds great. Off tmo to VZ and ATT especially it sounds bad... the vz and att users sound horrible they tell me I sound good though.

I think it's coming off tmo to other providers that is the sound difference, but if I remember correctly it's because other providers don't use a decent codec. It's funny because even to my fios home phone it sounds good but fios phone to tmo is bad. Go figure.

Does this count against your usage caps?

And if you hit your LTE cap, will your voice be throttled back to the 3G network or can they prioritize voice over data via QOS?

Re: Does this count against your usage caps?

My data meter doesn't move at all during the calls, except for the apps running in the back for mail.

Also there isn't a meter that shows it. so im guessing no.

Why do people think this uses your cap. texting doesn't why would calling? Besides you'd be using less than half a MB per minute

VoLTE is Unlimited, Just as UMTS/HSPA+ voice is.

It's billed as voice service, not as a data service.

VoLTE only counts as voice. They "filter" the bill based on how much of the data stream was for voice and how much was for all other traffic.

Have latency and battery issues been worked out?

I've heard VoLTE is still a battery hog and while LTE latency isn't bad for data, how will it compare to circuit-switched for voice.

Re: Have latency and battery issues been worked out?

I've used VoIP over H+, which has worse latency than LTE. My guess is that T-Mobile's VoLTE endpoints are near the edges of their network, so you're talking about only a few ms beyond the air interface latency of LTE (20-30ms). Less than 100ms of latency is perfectly serviceable for VoIP, so VoLTE will do just fine.

Why

What is the value of VoLTE? Why wouldn't I just make a regular call? I can see how converting over to all IP based technology might help the company but what does it do for the customer?

Were not talking about calling over wifi, were talking about over LTE so its still through the phone company's network.

Re: Why

They can fit more LTE calls on the tower. So you have less chance of not being able to make a call.

Nexus 5 update for VoLTE

Does anyone know how phones like the Nexus 5 will get the update to use VoLTE when it's enable in an area? Is that something Google pushes out or is it already enabled?

It would also be great if the switch to VoLTE also had an updated WiFi calling app to allow phones like the Nexus 5 to finally be able to use WiFi calling to T-mobile's network. Had to get a Galaxy S5 for the second line because of the need for the WiFi calling. Works great if you have a solid internet connection.

How about ..
