T-Mobile MyTouch3G On Sale Today
Second Android-powered phone on T-Mobile
by Karl Bode Wednesday 05-Aug-2009 tags: hardware · wireless
T-Mobile has announced that the Android-powered HTC MyTouch3G goes on sale today. The device comes in three colors and features a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, virtual keyboard, HSDPA and Wi-Fi, 3.2 megapixel camera, with six hours of talk time. The phone, available both online and in stores, costs $199 for new users willing to sign a two year contract. There's certainly no shortage of reviews for the device if you're interested. T-Mobile is using some 100 skydivers in San Francisco later today to celebrate the launch, so you just know it must be important.

Android

Please go to some other provider. I just picked up a Pre, but I'd seriously consider picking up any Android device that hit Sprint or Verizon.

Re: Android

Actually, Android is headed to another provider. Cellular South (yes, Cellular South) is about to offer an Android smartphone.

How a small regional carrier beat the likes of AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint to this is beyond me, but they did.

To answer your question I hear Sprint is getting the HTC Hero in October. The best Android phone out to date with built in flash for browsing. Here is some more info...

No 3.5mm audio jack?

I generally like HTC phones but why do they refuse to put 3.5mm audio jacks on their phones?

Re: No 3.5mm audio jack?

The phone comes with a short (4" or so) 3.5mm adapter that also has a button so you can pause, skip, etc. I actually prefer this to a 3.5mm jack on the phone - I get an in-line remote that I can use with any headphones.

I was eligible for an upgrade so I pre-ordered this phone in July and got it last week - loving it so far. It is my first Android phone, and it is light-years ahead of the Blackberry I switched from.

Have you run across any problems with apps not being allowed on the platform or on the network?

Re: No 3.5mm audio jack?

yes Google doesn't allow some apps. Such as the device being thethered. You should know that by now since it was covered before on the last GoogleOS phone.

But since it was a Google product it was okay and doesn't need any gov't regulation such as the iPhone.

FYI, Google isn't allowing it to be in the the Android Marketplace, but it can be freely downloaded on the web because this phone isn't locked down/need to be jailbroken like the iPhone.

You can easily download and use a tethering 3rd-party app outside the app store. That's why it's ok for Google to not have it in their app store.

You are wrong with your semantics. Google doesn't allow tethered apps in the Google market place, but since Google market is one of many places to get apps for the Android you can easily get the tethered apps from a number of legitimate places. The Android market place is not centralized under one roof like Apple's iPhone, and Google has no problem if you get your apps from some other market place, but it is better to get your apps from Android Market place because then you have some quality assurance.

Maybe you missed this sentence, "Yeah, smart users can still install tethering apps on their own with a little elbow grease", which is what we've been saying before you came in this thread with FUD and misinformation.

LMAO! iPhone fanboy? LMAO!

Sorry i don't use Apple Products, nor do i use Google Products. As for phone service I use Boost/Nextel. How is that a fanboy of Apple? LMAO!

Hell i wouldn't touch that iPhone nor G1 or G2 with a ten foot pole. Especially after dealing with both ATT Wireless/Mobility and T-Mobile.

And it does matter. Google pulled that app which makes them NO better than Apple. The only difference is Google for NOW lets you reinstall it. But also reserves the right to disable your device if you read that article. Now, how is that fair for the customer/consumer and any better than Apple?

Re: No 3.5mm audio jack?

I don't see what Google did any different than Apple. Both pulled Applications from their stores because either they or the Carrier did NOT want them on the network/being offered.

But Google fanboys don't have a problem with it. But when it comes to another company that does the same thing all of a sudden there are problems with it being done. Regardless if you can still download and install the product. It comes down to the fact that both companies pulled applications due to they did not what it for what ever reason! AFTER it was already on the store and being offered.

And google takes it farther by saying they can disable the phone or installing unapproved applications? WTF! you bought the damn paper weight what gives them the right to brick it? Apple doesn't do that they just want a law on their side.

Re: No 3.5mm audio jack?

Where does it say Google can brick a phone?

Google can do what ever it wants on their app store because you CAN get things outside. They don't have a monopoly regarding where you can get/download/buy apps.

Apple SHOULD NOT be able to pull apps because you CAN'T get things outside. Apple DOES have a monopoly on where you can get/download/buy apps. Jail breaking wouldn't even be possible without a 3rd party team constantly working to destroy Apple.

Do you still not understand this?

Google doesn't take it farther since Apple can disable apps remotely, too. But that's not an evil thing. As far as I know, neither Apple nor Google have used this capability.

Here's the policy that you're referencing, and note that it only applies to stuff you see in the Android Market"

Product Removals: From time to time, Google may discover a Product on the Market that violates the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement or other legal agreements, laws, regulations or policies. In such an instance, Google retains the right to remotely remove those applications from your Device at its sole discretion. If that occurs Google will make reasonable efforts to recover the purchase price of the Product, if any, from the originating Developer on your behalf. If Google is unable to recover the full amount of the purchase price, it will divide any recovered amounts between the affected users on a pro rata basis.
This reminds me of the kerfuffle that Amazon finds itself in over the Kindle and 1984 and some other title. Users are so angry, I bet that they wish they had that decision to make all over again! But that was a copyright flap. What should Amazon do if one of their ebooks caused something to execute that damaged the Kindle. Or what should Google do if one of their Android Market apps ran code that damaged the phone? And we know what Apple could do (and should do) if one of their apps begins to go postal - blacklist it. Beyond that, Apple seems to be leaving existing installs of AppStore-removed titles alone. I haven't heard of anything disappearing from Androids, either.

So far, I can't name any applications that Google has forcibly removed using the above policy. (Can you?) Until then, the worst we can do is "we'll see when it happens."

Here's the big difference: As far as I can tell, Android doesn't need a "jailbreak" to run "unapproved" 3rd-party apps, Apple does.

By the way, thanks for pointing that removal clause out. I wasn't aware of it. I was aware of Apple's blacklist (and I've seen similar registry entries in MS Mobile). After thinking this through, I have to hope that they're well-intended but we'll see if and how they're actually used.

When will they learn.. if its a touch screen, whats the need of those 4-5 buttons at the bottom?

In this case 6 with one pointer ball. All it does is act as a dust collector and scratches from wear in 3 months.

Got my answer on the cost

T-Mobile's data+text plan is about $35 a month. You'll need a voice plan, too, and these start at about $30. The phone is $199 plus a 2-year contract.

Android is coming to Verizon

Or at least according to a page I read the other day. I am due for my upgrade soon and looking for something to replace my Omnia which I purchased out of pocket. Its a phone from Moto, you can check the link out below:

I love my Omnia but there are two things I can't seem to get used to. One of them is battery life, mine is terrible. I don't use the WiFi, Bluetooth or the Opera browser that often but it still needs to be on the charge at least once a day or it dies as I sleep. The other is I have found I can't text nearly as quickly as I can with a physical keyboard. I am an avid texter and could blast out messages way faster on my Venus with T9.

Longtime Verizon user who likes it.....

I know these types of threads always get the trolls touting that carrier XXX sucks or something like that... I guess it's to be expected when anyone who knows how to type is allowed to post?

I use arguably the best network out of the bunch but you know I was pleasantly surprised how well T-Mobile works in my area and how good the voice quality was compared to my Verizon phones I've used.

Now that I think about it, I've come to realize that I don't need national cellular coverage I only need it to work in the areas I travel to most. There was a point when I had to use a landline or payphone somewhere for service..... now that was spotty service.

I think as a former VZW employee I bought into the whole coverage thing and became blinded to the over priced MRC and draconian polcies they had. Is having coverage in areas you'll never need it worth the extra $50 per month? You decide.

Anyways, this device is great and looks much better in person. My boss picked up one on Pre-order and let me have it for a few days to test it out so naturally I was stoked to have this opportunity.

It's small, compact and syncs effortlessly with your Gmail email, contacts and calendar functions. POP3 email access is a breeze to setup for other providers and it supports Exchange email out of the box.

The onscreen keyboard will take some acclimadation coming from a full qwerty keyboard, but the challenge is small change in exchange for a much better OS and awesome HTML browser.

I can tell by using this that a lot of thought was put into the details.

If you're a huge lumber jack with gigantic hands, you probably won't like the small size of the keyboard. (Thank God not all of us are) If you are a photo enthusiast, you may be annoyed at the lack of a flash for the camera. Not a big deal to me though.

The App store has all the apps anyone could need including the coveted Google Voice one. T-Mobile throws in a Free App Pack which gives you LBS Sherpa, Visual Voicemail, Enhanced My Account Access, Hot Spot Locator and more.

I'm hoping that in a future update they will improve the virtual keyboard so that the buttons near the corners are more responsive.

I got the white one. I've had a lot of compliments on the way it looks but one girl did say it did look a bit girly Oh well to each his/her own, right? I had two people at the gym come up to me last night and asked me if my phone was the new "myTouch?" People are definitely aware of this phones existance regardless of how some industry employees (Sprint, ATT, Verizon) employees try to spin things.

If you are a T-Mobile sub wanting an advanced touchscreen smartphone or an user from another provider looking for a better value, I'd recommend this device. Just don't be too easily swayed against the onscreen keyboard. It will take a while for you to get used to it.

In conclusion, I challenge all you haters to give this device a chance before you start spreading FUD. If T-Mobile works poorly in the areas you need it that's one thing, but if you're experience is 5 years old and/or you just have a poor understanding on how wireless mobility networks operate, step outside your shell and into the light.

Re: Longtime Verizon user who likes it.....

You're right about T-Mobile service. I've had nothing but great coverage here in San Francisco and everywhere I've traveled with my G1. T-Mobile seems to be very strong in California and my bill for unlimited voice/data/text is only $94 a month including taxes.

How is your battery life with the myTouch? That's my biggest complaint with the G1. I can't get through the day without charging my phone. Luckily I have an extra battery that T-Mobile sent me for free after complaining about the horrible battery life.

My wife's had her myTouch for a week. Battery life is the same as what you've said, ie: poor. If she's using it often (she texts quite a bit) and checking email, it can't get through the day.

Re: Longtime Verizon user who likes it.....

My battery lasts all day.

As you can imagine it's new and I'm constantly touching the screen and checking my various email accounts. I use Yahoo, Gmail and Exchange.

I also stream lastFM at work. Throughout a full work day with WiFi on, I keep around a 50% battery life. Not bad for the amount I use it.

Left idle on a full charge this thing hangs on to the 100% mark for a long time.

If you get one, and are tech savvy

I can't recommend rooting your Android phone more. It can be flashed back to its factory condition if there are any problems, but you can do so much. You get a lot more options for software to run (Backup for Root Users is invaluable for free backups of apps, text messages, etc) and you can add new themes.

For example, the HTC Hero theme, to me, is heads and tails better than the standard Android theme.

»android-unleashed.com/2009/06/ht···-g1.html

Though I have no idea if rooting is possible yet on MyTouch3G.
