T-Mobile Playing 3G Catch Up, Fast
Quickly moving to 7.2 Mbps HSPA, then 21 Mbps
by Karl Bode Wednesday 11-Nov-2009 tags: business · wireless · hardware · bandwidth
Being the first carrier to launch a phone with the Android OS got T-Mobile lots of attention, though it also drew attention to the fact the carrier's 3G HSDPA network footprint was a little lacking. T-Mobile faced delays in getting the network up and running, and in 2008 blamed Uncle Sam for being slow to vacate the 1700MHz spectrum they purchased from the old fellow. They've since been playing catch up, and are doing a rather good job of it. Glenn Fleishman offers a good refresher on the company's plan to move quickly to HSPA 7.2, and ultimately to 21 Mbps service. HSPA+ should see deployment in 2010 on a "fairly broad-scale" basis, T-Mobile tells Fleishman.

Better Technology

If they still have a 5G caps they should take their time and come up with a better technology.

I believe they have 10 GB caps which is double everyone else, but still lame.

Re: Better Technology

The cap is still 5GB, but the price is between everyone else and CricKet ($50 vs. $60) and you can get uncapped through Millenicom on their network for $70.

The cap is 10GB and it is a "soft cap", they don't cut you off or charge extra, they just throttle your speed.

I pay $24.95 for "unlimited" data that includes 400 text messages and tethering.

You're using the Wichita server, not Chicago, and the results are still nice.

Re: Better Technology

yea wichita for some reason is the preferred server when on t-mobiles network. i'm guessing it has to do with how they pool bandwidth or something

i just think its so awesome that ookla finally made an app for android.

They haven't caught up...

They haven't caught up unless they fix their dropped calls issues with 3G. I had the G1 and calls dropped all the time. I replaced the phone twice. Eventually I broke my contract and went to the iphone. While AT&T service is more spotty than TMO in Chicago, at least my calls don't consistently get dropped in the 3g-2g handoff.

Wow, I just left AT&T because of dropped calls for 3 years running!

So far in 6 weeks, not one dropped call on TMO.

Ditto, AT&T: Suck it, Tmo has been nothing but smooth sailing

I had drops all day but it was actually due to having multiple towers in the same area of similar strength, one being GPRS and causing everything to drop. Running cyanogenmod fixed that problem for me. Also a chicago guy here.

Great so far

I've had my G1 for about half a year now, and T-mobile service (voice and data) has been stellar. (Switched from ATT). While I've done quite a few trips, I seem to always end up in a 3G coverage area.

1700 MHz

my problem with tmobile is that they are using spectrum not supported by many 3G phones ... including iPhone.

I take that as a positive, because it means these airwaves are not being plugged up by hordes of roaming iphone users.

OTOH, the G1 of course supports the other frequencies just fine and I've even used it in Europe with a local SIM card. (T-mobile will unlock the phone at no charge on request).

The only phone that people are complaining about not having 3G on T-Mobile is...you guessed it...the iPhone. T-Mobile has done wonders for their 3G selection to the point that it's probably just as good as your average CDMA carrier's 3G lineup, which seems to be fine for the Verizona nd Sprint hordes (all 140 million of them) out there.

Re: Playing catch up???

TMO should skip their build of 3G and move right to something else. a nice chunk of Clear could do the trick. Network being build NOW and already has customers on it. Proven to work (still not in "lab testing" like LTE) and can be upgrade to LTE IF needed.
