T-Mobile Plots LTE CourseWill milk HSPA software enhancements, then jump to LTE ( old news - 02:58PM Wednesday Nov 05 2008) tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · T-Mobile UST-Mobile barely has their third generation HSDPA network up and running, something highlighted by the recent launch of the HTC G1 with Android. Given they're so late to the 3G game (not their words of course), T-Mobile tells Unstrung that the company will not deploy high-speed packet access (HSPA) evolution (HSPA+) upgrades, but will instead spend those investment dollars on LTE. Companies like AT&T, who also plan a HSDPA to LTE migration path, have stated they intend to milk HSPA with software and hardware upgrades, offering speeds up to 20Mbps downstream. T-Mobile says they'll stick with HSPA software upgrades only, which still allows them to offer speeds up to 14Mbps. Their first order of business, however, remains getting HSDPA into more markets. join:2004-08-07 New York, NY | By 2014 I doubt Tmo' will have any LTE gear deployed commercially before 2014. There are companies who are already deploying 4G here in the US, and Tmo' just deployed 3G. I really dont see LTE coming from them any time soon!

| LTE vs WIMAX Wimax is going to dominate 4G. Who wants to pay 80 bucks for a laptop card when you will be able to pay 50 bucks to clearwire for multiple devices. Since the merger was approved Wimax will be first to market and there will be nation wide network by the time the first LTE tower is up. | |

It will be up to the wireless operators to fully leverage that advantage however, so its unclear what will happen. Since Sprint will be the force for Wimax, I have to doubt it will become dominant. Their track record is abysmal and somehow they will find a way to squander their early rollout advantage. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. In my case, I have a Blackberry with a data plan, which I tether to my laptop when traveling or desktop when my home internet connection goes down. Also, Clearwire only provides service in 16 states. My cell phone works in all 50, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and several overseas countries.
LTE vs. WiMax is apples to oranges.

Well there are already Wimax cellphones, and theoretically as a 4G service it should be no different than any other 'cellular' service. Sprint is supposedly replacing their EVDO network with Wimax, so if you are in a Sprint (Xohm) service area in the future (assuming of course they actually deploy) any device will be able to use it. -- Комитет государственной безопасности

| Re: LTE vs WIMAX said by tiger72 :there *could* be a nationwide network, but all but one of the cell operators are choosing LTE... Verizon, T-Mobile, Alltel and ATT are going LTE. LTE is also the upgrade path for a vast majority of GSM operators around the world. Without that backing, WiMax doesn't have a chance. I dont disagree with you. However, if Sprint gets their act together they "could" take advantage of the multi-year lead they have on LTE. As TK mentioned though, they dont seem to do much rigth these days so who knows what will happen. -- Комитет государственной безопасности
