T-Mobile Quietly Reinstates Handset Upgrade Fee
Price break lasted all of four months for consumers...
by Karl Bode Thursday 23-Apr-2009 tags: competition · business · wireless · hardware · T-Mobile US
If you recall, T-Mobile made a big deal last December about the fact that they had eliminated their annoying $18 "handset upgrade fee." Well, several users tell us it's back from the dead, one user noticing the re-established fee when he went to upgrade his sister's line. A slew of other carriers often jam consumers with a nonsensical handset upgrade fee, though there's usually ways around it if you jump through whatever hoops they've established (upgrading online, in person, through a big box retailer, or via carrier pigeon on the second Monday of each month). Such nonsensical fees are part of the cost of doing business, but are broken out below the line to milk more revenue from customers while keeping the advertised price the same.

Oh No!! I was going to upgrade my phone

today! Yikes! Well, maybe when I go into the T-Mobile store they won't have received that memo yet. My handset is two years old and the keys are almost worn out. I've become used to getting a free phone every two years.

Re: Oh No!! I was going to upgrade my phone

The 2-Year contract does not pro-rate until 18-months into your contract, which is ridiculous. The Big 3 should be all on the same page. I think T-Mobile needs to re-think their contract terms along with the $18 handset upgrade.

T-Mobile has some nice features with their product but the terms are suckering the customers.

So far so good...

Even though I'm with a different carrier (VZW), I haven't had to deal any of that. One way around that fee (if it's possible) is to buy an unlocked phone from eBay and just insert a SIM card and voila activated without any fees.

I bought the LG CU500 for my best friend from eBay unlocked. The phone is for AT&T but when my friend inserted the SIM card, it was active. He loves the phone and has been working for him since.

Re: So far so good...

I think the best response is "You're going to charge me a fee? In that case, forget it. You'll get my number port request later today."

Absolutely ridiculous on a GSM provider where all you do is put your SIM in the phone you want to use. I'm on their prepaid service and I've swtiched phones several times without even needing to contact them. Hell, that "handset upgrade fee" is more than I pay per year to keep my service going ($100 90 days after I got the starter phone gave me 1000 minutes and all minutes thereafter as long as I don't let it expire are good for 365 days. So every year I buy the cheap $10 refill, add 35 minutes and renew the carryover for another year. 4th year in and I still have over 700 minutes). Not quite the coverage of Verizon but far better than Sprint and AT&T in this area, and I rarely lose signal.

Re: So far so good...

So let me ask you this, after you tell them your port request will come through later make sure you also tell them that how smart and slick you are for getting out of paying att $18 for the upgrade but paying the new company you choose $36 to activate there. Real smart dude!!!

Now let me ask you this, If a wireless company didn,t charge activation and upgrade fees, give away free phones or discount them close to free, may I ask you where do you think the funding to improve their network comes from? Let me guess you are going to say the monthly service fee that you pay. That maybe be true if you are a local ma & pa wireless company or still operate an anolog network, but when your network spending in one state is larger than the GNP of most small countries you need to get the funding else where to stay on top.(kust look at what they spent in NY, over a Billion dollars) Lets face it technology is not cheap and if you want the best that technology has to offer you are going to have to pay to get it.
The fact that you are prepay doesn't even give you the right to even comment on this subject.

The customer(s) must have upgraded at an indirect.

Because the call center rep I just talked to has not been notified of this. Also nothing on HoFo or Tmo news.

yes there is. It's just very old news.

That said, more recent TMO/Android news is this:
T-Mobile USA And HTC Have Sold 1 Million G1 Android Phones
»www.informationweek.com/blog/mai···d_1.html

"The G1 remains as the lone Android handset available to consumers in the U.S. and around the world. While some may be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the HTC Magic, one million people have taken to the G1 in the U.S. Shipping one million units is a clear indication that the phone is a success."

No, I was upgrading on the website which clearly listed the fee, and I called 611 to inquire and they confirmed.

I Want To Love Them

I have been a TMO customer for years and I am happy with the service I get but they keep doing things that really make it hard to love them. As the number four carrier, they really need to stop acting like the number one and number two carriers. If Deutsche-Telekom is wondering why their US division is doing so poorly, look no further than how they act. Yes, they may have good customer service but the nuisance fees and surcharges are just as bad as the big three. If I really want to be annoyed and gouged, I will go with VZW or AT&T. At least I will get better coverage in the rural areas.

Not hard...

When companies do that crap to me, I just escalate the complaint and during each escalation, I remind them of how much of their time I'm taking and keep asking if it is worth it to them...... On these small, non-government fees I always win.

Trust me. The reason I left T-mo is due to their "Executive Customer Relations" department - the place you end up at the end of the road, the so-called highest level. Those reps are the most rude, incompetent people I've ever dealt with in my life. Some of them are just vindictive against you. They just have unprecedented authority to do whatever the hell they want to your account and leave you powerless. Be ready to get the FTC, FCC, BBB, and AG involved.

Virgin mobile

Exactly why I use this company. Prepaid phone, If my balance gets below $5 they add $15 automatically. If I don't use it they add $15 every 3 months. No fees, no funds, no rip offs like this article talks about.

Re: Virgin mobile

no phone upgrades either on Virgin Mobile either. What you're describing is just like TMO's FlexPay package.

Re: Virgin mobile

18 every 2 years for a new phone isn't a big deal, considering that's almost the difference you save every month for not having AT&T or Verizon lol.

But don't you have to commit to another 2 year contract? I'm old fashion, you keep me by satisfaction not obligation

no big deal

not to defend tmobile (I'm not a customer) but processing upgrades is a hassle for the carriers in store. upgrade online. no fee. what is there to complain about?

AT&T has an upgrade fee.

VZW has an "early" upgrade fee of $20, waived if you do it online.

If you want the best deal, STFU and upgrade online.

I just got 3 upgrade fees waved by AT&T, because according to my plan I do not have "Upgrade Fees". YMMV

I was TRYING to upgrade online, and they were charging me the fee ONLINE. Maybe YOU should STFU and stop talking about things you know nothing about (since you admitted you're not a T-mobile customer).
