T-Mobile Revamping Their 3G Coverage Map
Will soon show where you can get 'Very Fast Mobile Web'
by Karl Bode Friday 05-Mar-2010 tags: coverage · business
T-Mobile is getting ready to revamp their wireless broadband coverage map starting on March 14, according to internal information obtained by TmoNews. As we noted in January, T-Mobile is slowly upgrading their HSPA network, so in many markets it will offer downstream speeds of 7.2 Mbps. They've also promised to upgrade the network by year's end to HSPA+, which theoretically offers maximum downstream speeds of 21 Mbps (though you'll see something closer to 7-10 Mbps). Apparently, the map will indicate the locations where you can get "Mobile Web" (EDGE), "Fast Mobile Web" (HSDPA) and "Very Fast Mobile Web" (the latest HSPA+).

Good news

That's good news, was hoping this information would be accessible so I can see what my town is getting.

I just hope they stay on it for upgrading the maps to reflect the real life counterpart, in a timely matter.

..Now if I can only get 1mbps or faster download ..stuck between 500-900kbps download and like 400-560 upload, on 3G.

My test history

Here's a snapshot I did on some previous tests while on 3G in my area.

With the actual dates and times. I however don't seem to get 3G at home.

This is on my rooted Nexus One with T Mobile.

And yes, I'm bored.

Can't Wait!

I'm glad they're doing this. This will give users a more accurate assessment of where they can expect faster or slower speeds.

I'm really excited as an Angelino that we're getting upgraded to support HSPA + this year.

We truly will have the fastest wireless broadband network. We're just shy of AT&T's 3G footprint and growing rapidly.

If anything, we'll offer those on the fence an alternative to the other carriers.

I embrace more competition.

Re: Can't Wait!

I wouldn't say that comparing T-Mobile's 3G network to AT&T's is valid quite yet, though in another year or two that might change. For all its faults AT&T has 3G in a lot of places these days, and T-Mobile frankly doesn't.

What good is having a 3G connection when the speed still sucks? It's like having a fiber connection to your house but having a dialup uplink at the other end of the fiber.

Re: Can't Wait!

Some 3G (even slower) is better than no 3G at all (if you ask me)
Stuck on edge in my area still....

Actually, my experience with AT&T has been that it was faster than T-Mobile. That said, that experience was about three months ago...

Re: Can't Wait!

I did an informal experiment with AT&T and T-Mobile. I used an identical blackberry device in the same physical location but on 2 different days. With AT&T, I could not download apps or updates to apps using their 3g service. The downloads would time out. I finally contacted customer support where they informed me that there were no outages or issues in the area to explain it. I tried the exact same thing with T-Mobile and the downloads were shockingly fast.

Re: Can't Wait!

I don't doubt it. However my experience has been that T-Mobile's 3G service hsn't expanded out all that much, and that speeds are lackluster. Here in Denver, and back in Fredericksburg, TX AT&T can t times do 2 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up. We're talking about data cards here though rather than BlackBerries...

Well AT&T boasts today that they have 230 million Americans covered with their 3G network.

T-Mobile claimed at the end of 2009 that they had 205 million Americans covered. They've since added several new cities.

The gap is closing in.

I believe AT&T will get so caught up in a PR and advertising pursuit to stay a few steps behind Verizon's LTE network that they'll start to lose their footing more and more with their current HSPA network.

Start By Making the Coverage Map Accurate

Bringing T-Mobile's 3G coverage map into sync with their actual 3G coverage would be a place to start. The map says the two T-Mobile towers nearest me have 3G coverage. A modem placed at the boundary fence around each tower says they don't. And I'm not the only one to experience this.

Re: Start By Making the Coverage Map Accurate

SO TRUE.. I wish there actual voice map was at least accurate ! there coverage is still only 65% of what ATT overall coverage is. I hate when my blackberry goes SOS in less urban areas but the guy next to me still has signal with ATT service. Maybe they should be working on tower roaming agreements or new towers in general and supplying basic 3G coverage everywhere before they start looking to upgrade the current 3G speeds.

Re: Start By Making the Coverage Map Accurate

You need to add the tower bands to your network list. My old phone was imported from Europe and would not work outside the tmobile network until updated the network settings in the phone. Once I did that it would pick up any network the hardware could find.

None of my phones, imported or otherwise, need to have this done. Sometimes forcing a network scan will speed up the process, but even without intervention it will eventually find and connect to a network.

Can we get some 3G for starters?

I wouldn't mind if T-Mobile actually had 3G in my area It's the only carrier to not have it.

It doesn't do much good....

It doesn't do much good when there aren't even enough towers in your area to get a signal. Every single carrier works at my home (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Etc) except.... you've guessed it... T-Mobile.

I was a T-Mobile user for 5+ years until I moved into my new home. I had even just renewed months before moving into my new home. T-Mobile waved all the ETF fee's and closed my account due to no coverage. Of course, I had to provide a copy of my electric bill but no biggie.

I like T-Mobile, but I really think they need to improve their coverage before improving their speeds.

That says a lot for Tmobile.
I couldn't get service with ATT.
They made me pay the ETF.

Re: It doesn't do much good....

T-Mobile is a great company. That's why I kept them for so many years despite having coverage issues in my area and lacking behind in data speeds.

However, there came a time where I said "enough is enough". I could live without coverage at work, but at home too? That was enough for me. Plus the lack of 3G really killed it too.

Either way, still an excellent company with an excellent choice of phones
