I have been with t-mobile for 7 years, and this is the only major service outage I am aware of. Seconded. Besides a serious outage during Hurricane Katrina (name me one provider that didn't have issues in the southeastern US) it's been very solid for me.
One thing that really bothered me last night were how so many people's first reactions to the outage was to threaten running to another carrier. No one guarantees constant, uninterrupted service. The reason for this is that there are things that happen that are beyond anyone's control.
That being said, I'd much prefer that T-mo had been a little more open about what actually happened. Just level with us, and you'd find us more willing to accept things.

| Re: Usual service? We have had at least one phone in our house with T-Mo for the past 9 years. This is the first interruption of service that I have heard of - no we were not affected, having been using the phone without issue.
I can state that their customer service is heads above everyone else (I also have AT&T and VZW - so I know how they compare).
As others have said, their 3G coverage is lousy but the phone we have is used only for voice calls so I don't care.

| T-mobile is not a re-branded VoiceStream, they were bought out by DT in 2001 to plant the base for DT's wireless arm in the us (T-mobile usa). This was mainly to counter rival vodaphone's verizon wireless partnership. This was 2001, 8 years ago.

I think bashers/whiners need to learn to put some "i am happy with this aspect" in with their "oh my goddddd it suckssss" because yea they wouldn't be in business if they were "that bad".

| That happened third time this week NYC was affected in evening hours, I would not be able to make or receive any calls by either immiediate disconnect or all circuits busy message. However, my outage didn't affect data service. I was still able to browse net, send/receive text even if signal showed no bars. Temporary solution that worked sometimes was to disable 3G. | T-Mobile Sucks I had a T-Mobile company phone for 3 years between 2003 and 2006. I must say it was the worst service ever. Lots of dropped calls, spotty coverage, and this endless hum that switching phones and SIM cards couldn't get rid of. Plus everyone said I sounded muffled. You couldn't pay me to use their service. Maybe it's better now, but I hated it with a passion when I had it.
My Alltel service (now Verizon) is MUCH better, although I have considered trying MetroPCS to save some money; my bill would be cut in half. Plus they have no contracts, so if it sucks I'll stick with Verizon.

| Only 5%? Doubtful I just don't buy into them saying it was only 5%. I know a LOT of people with T-Mo (myself included) and they were ALL suffering some sort of outage yesterday. | T Mobile has one tower in my area I live in brooklyn new york and when the one tower that was close to me went down or had an outage i had no signal. i tried to search for another tower on my phone none it couldnt pick up another tower. so then i tried to roam onto att wireless towers and the phone in the list said att so i pressed on it to roam and it gave message restricted no access. so i called t mobile they told me to take phone and walk to another tower which is riduculous then they said they have no roaming agreements with att wireless in tHE NEW YORK area. one manager had the gall to say to carry a tower on my back which isnt funny since you cant get no service.i want to let people know anytime you cant pick up a t mobile tower or if there is an outage you cannot roam onto ATT's towers why and this is for the entire 50 states they have no roaming agreements with ATT wireless anywhere. so that means you a sitting duck. for those people who experience an outage try and roam and you will get message restricted no access to att network's towers. so for those who had an outage imagine if you could roam onto att's towers during tmobile outage you could make a call. that is the truth cause i spoke to friends who have tmobile in other states same thing happens. now i will tell you why you get more minutes for your money cause if there towers or network goes down you cant roam onto another carriers network. you are stuck with no service. they have less towers than sprint , verizon and att. thats why you get more minutes for less money. i went to another location to try to pick up another tmobile tower and no luck. t mobile told me to travel 50 blocks from where i am to pick up signal from another tower are kidding me. i waited for tower close to me to be back up. i also got an error on my bill for 200.00 billed and i didnt cancel service my phone was active i spoke to manager to get credit and correction it took over 1 month to get credit back they tried to rip me off and managers just keep lying so do the customer service reps they kept telling me in 24 hours credit will be applied. folks they lie manipulate and deceive customers. as soon as my contract expires i am switching to another carrier. it won't be sprint cause i hear and see people having horror stories with them. i am thinking either ATT or VERIZON. i wonder which is better coverage in new york? anyone know. | |

| Outage a lot more than 5%!
In NYC. All phones either had no service (0 bars), all circuits busy, or just silence. There were bursts of connectivity amongst the outage (on the bus 5 people's phone ring at the same time). Sometimes it was possible to force a reconnect by going into settings and choosing Scan for Networks.
Incoming calls went to silence, not to voicemail.
