T-Mobile To Buy SunCom Wireless
$2.4 billion deal including debt....
by Karl Bode Monday 17-Sep-2007 tags: business · wireless · T-Mobile US
T-Mobile has announced that the company will be acquiring SunCom Wireless in a deal worth about $2.4 billion (including debt). SunCom Wireless, which has roughly 1.1 million customers, offers service in the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. T-Mobile CEO Robert Dotson sells the deal in a prepared statement:

"The strategic fit of the SunCom operations will make this a near-perfect acquisition. It will round out our domestic footprint, allowing us to serve 98 of the top 100 markets, and will significantly benefit our financial position by reducing roaming expense. Furthermore, it will add a talented group of employees that will enable us to serve more than one million new SunCom customers with industry-leading national products and services available under the T-Mobile brand."

Great. Can American customers get a 3G wireless broadband network now?

What a waste....

Pretty crappy company. I hope they didn't buy them for the customers because they'll just go to ATT (Suncom got most of their properties from ATT back in the day).

Sounds quite right. I went to Myrtle Beach this summer and while I was there and on my way there I never once was on a T-Mobile tower. 95% of the time I was roaming on SunCom (the other 5% being Cingular). They seem to have excellent coverage in the Carolinas.

Waste eh ? Do you realize the #1 complaint so far among tmo users ?

When vacationing to the "islands" they get horrible coverage because tmo's negotiated contracts are only allowed so many roaming minutes before they get a huge price jack.

This kills off the complaint and the providers roaming agreements to many quality resort islands, as well as the Carolinas where they have a big coverage gap.

Even T-Mobile prepaid has roamed on Suncom and AT&T for more than a year now in the Carolinas.

I suppose postpaid users might have to pay extra, but prepaid users were very happy with the ability to roam for free.

Now we can get local numbers...

SunCom's SEC filings indicate they have 1,900 employees at this time.

I have no idea how many work at their Corporate HQ in Berwyn, PA, just outside Philadelphia, but you would think they would be the first to go.

I just hope the people in the current SunCom coverage area don't get to go through a year of,

" SunCom's Name Is Now T-Mobile " commercials.

UH, I did notice the transition from Jamie Lee Curtis to Catherine Zeta Jones, as the Voicestream Wireless, to T-Mobile Spokesperson.

That was a life changing moment for me.

They could run those commercials for 20 years and I would never complain.

We would never see it if we lived elsewhere, but folks in the Carolina's and Puerto Rico would love to hear SunCom's name is now T-Mobile from Scarlett Johansson for the next year.

Man, I sure hope they don't go with that line of "Can you hear me now!!"

I just dropped that crap a** Verizon and their "CAN'T hear me now, can ya?" service this past weekend for T-Mobile. Although I haven't hit a T-Mobile tower yet, and probably never will until T-Mobile moves a little closer to me, but my connection is 10 times better than Verizon's ever was, even on a good, clear day.

Does this mean that I won't be roaming if I go on vacation to the Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico now?

You'll still be able to roam. All they said was that in the SumCom areas, T-Mobile won't have to pay roaming fees anymore because it will be their network.

Forced move

This is most likely a response to at&t buying Dobson. T-Mobile needs to grow or else be rendered irrelevant as a national carrier.

Unicel serves most of Northern New England: Western, Northern & Seacoast New Hampshire, Northeastern New York, Western Massachusetts, all of Vermont, as well as most of ME.

They were bought out by Verizon for the CDMA coverage of those pesky winter vacation spots like Cannon mountain. Verizon was paying so much for roaming out there that it was simply smarter to buy the company and add more profit to the Wireless behemoth.

I beg to differ. There are many regional gsm providers that can and will be bought by tmo or AT&T in the future.

Alaska is a rather bustling area of growth now. And most services there are indeed GSM.

Caprock in texas is a small company that is probably next on the purchase list for TMO, just for the towers. As well as dtcwireless and iowa wireless. Unless they have already been sold. But I don't remember.

There are many hole tmo can fill here if they choose to keep buying. then again AT&T now has enough capital from wireless to keep engulfing the local wireless carriers to fill it's gaps as well.

Win win in the end , customers get better rates from the big guys then the little guys and the company gets more customers. Instant growth for the company.

Yep. It doesn't make much sense economically for all of these little independents to be out there. This way the big boys can put together a huge unified network and eliminate roaming charges that they pay.

In the future I see at&t and tmo increasing their GSM footprint with Sprint and Verizon duking it out for a national CDMA footprint by buying out the small fry.

I agree 100 %.

In fact I see sprint/nextel being sold off to Verizon wireless for quite a bit of change in the next 8 to 10 years.

The only place sprint can compete is on data. And that alone won't keep them in the game.

Re: Forced move

I actually think that their partnership with TMO is a long standing one so far. They've been a partners for some time now. Roughly 3 to 5 years. I don't see TMO cutting the deal only because TMO gets a cut of the sales. Either way its a win win for both companies. Its basically like reselling Cable modem service, either way the actual company is keeping a customer weather it be from the ISP they're wholesaling to or the customer buying direct.

iWireless is a regional provider though there and have plans for the most part targeted to their users such as prepaid iWireless (the prepaid cards) or unlimited iWireless like Revol or MetroPCS or Cricket.

Re: Forced move

no. iWireless is a private company owned by a bunch of co-ops. The link i posted tells about them and who they're owners are and what the purpose of them doing business. They're customers of T-Mobile and iWireless is all GSM. Why would Alltel want them? iWireless doesn't own anything.

I predicte this 2 years ago

I predicted this two years ago, I wish I could have had money on it, here is the deal T-Mobile does not offer service in the Carolina's they have roaming here, but they do not have local phone numbers or local stores, those stores and employees will probably keep their jobs as the stores will be re-branded.

The network here is GSM and it is fairly new it was built by AT&T Wireless, Suncom owned a GSM network in VA which they built with some help from AT&T Wireless When Cingular bought AT&T Wireless they gave the AT&T GSM Network in the Carolina's to Suncom in exchange for the Suncom network in Virginia, basically becuase Cingualr had it's own GSM network in the Carolina's and didn't need both, but Cingular had no VA coverage. The Current Suncom stores here in the Carolina's were originally AT&T Stores those were traded as well, these employees all kept their jobs.

Re: hate when this happens

If Suncom is in the area, and T-mobile just purchased them, I would stand to reason, T-mobile will become much better. Yes, they may not have a 49.99 service, but for a few extra bucks, you get a bigger network. Pretty soon you will be able to roam the country, and most of Europe without having to switch carriers. This is why I left Cingular, before becoming AT&t, and Verizon for T-mobile.

I have a Verizon phone for work and a personal Sprint phone. I am surprised by the amount of places I canget service with Sprint but not with Verizon. There are a few where I get Verizon but not Sprint, but they are few and far between. I also get unlimited internet for $15/mo and I can tether for that price, can't do that on Verizon. I know it is the old slower data service, but it works great for email at the airport. I almost went with Verizon for my personal phone, but I am glad I didn't.
