T-Mobile Undecided On 42 Mbps HSPA+ Upgrades Though HSPA+ HTC Android drops in September Wednesday Jul 07 2010 18:02 EDT Yesterday we noted that a leaked slide from a Seattle T-Mobile manager meeting indicated that the company was looking at pushing HSPA toward 42 Mbps. While it's certainly possible (42 Mbps HSPA+ upgrades have been embraced by Australia's Telstra and Japan's NTT DoCoMo), it requires new multi-antenna base stations and not just software upgrades. T-Mobile is staying mum on the rumor of their own 42 Mbps ambitions. According to Light Reading, T-Mobile owner Deutsche Telekom isn't confirming the upgrade one way or the other: quote: According to the Deutsche Telekom spokesman, the carrier has not made a decision on that. "T-Mobile USA has not decided yet if they will use the new 42 Mbps standard or maybe rollout LTE for the US," he said in an emailed response. "This decision will be made at a later point of time after having considered all necessary aspects and the experiences made with both HSPA+ and LTE in the other markets of Deutsche Telekom."
The company is confirming that they'll launch the first smartphone (an HTC Android) for their evolved High-Speed Packet Access Plus (HSPA+) network this September. |

But with the choice of the onscreen keyboard only a touch away, I find I use the physical keyboard less and less. Seven months later and its only when I have to edit something do I sometimes slide it open and use the hardware keyboard. The big screen of the Droid-X is going to be very hard to stay away from.

I also used to be a hardware keyboard junkie... But then I realized that I'd rather have a device that's 1/2 as thick, and I now enjoy being able to fit my phone in my pocket so much more easily.
| | | | |
Re: New Phone TimeAgreed, I was also a need a keyboard junkie, no longer, I've found that I've adapted to my virtual keyboard which I now prefer to a physical keyboard, many keyboards are much much worse than my virtual iphone keyboard.

Re: New Phone TimeI am the opposite.
I thought I didnt need a physical keyboard and I thought I would be fine with a virtual keyboard.
So I went ahead and got a Hero.
The phone is amazing, BUT i hate the virtual keyboard. I have found that texting, or any writing for that matter, becomes a shore that requires all my attention, instead of before that i typed without looking.
I cant wait to get a new phone, and SURELY it will have a physical keyboard.

They should do at least 1 marketIt would make for great commercials like the ones Sprint runs for 4G in L.A. even though there is no 4G coverage here, or anywhere in Cali that I know of.
| | |
Re: They should do at least 1 marketthose are nationwide commercials. Ohio doesn't have the 4G service yet either and they're played all the time.

Sprint/Clear are rolling out 4G in LA right now and it's unofficially active in some areas. Probably won't be officially announced till later this year but many are able to use it... » forum.androidcentral.com ··· les.html

Do it!If T-Mo takes the plunge they will have to upgrade stuff on the tower, however the tech is completely backward compatible with their current 3G handset portfolio, in stark contrast to LTE and WiMAX. This already puts them ahead of the game, particularly considering their rather sparse spectrum holdings compared to Verizon and Sprint, as well as AT&T.
Another bonus is that if TMo wants to do so they can amp up speeds to beyond Verizon's advertised LTE throughput. Throw in a reasonable usage policy (compared to VZW) and you've got 3.99G for the price of 3G (consumer win) and a network that actually has phones built for it (network win)...with an upgrade price that is probably a good bit lower than LTE (balance sheet win).
WiMAX is great and LTE is just peachy, but incremental upgrades are quick upgrades, and that's good for a populace ravening for next-gen speeds.

Re: Do it!said by iansltx:If T-Mo takes the plunge they will have to upgrade stuff on the tower.. The tower upgrades are already there, the cables are already run, and they have installed Radio Frequency Systems (RFS)"Dual-Pol" antennas, which are two slant 45' polarized antennas in one sector panel. The cabling and MIMO antennas are already part of their 3G HSPA 21+ system, so the HSPA 42+ upgrades should be really based in software upgrades, and possibly some transceiver swap cards in the existing cabinets on the ground. A few antenna swapouts are almost free, opposed to the concept of gutting everything and starting over from scratch with LTE, as Verizon plans to do. Back-haul problems are already being put in place via multiple Zayo networks OC-48(2.4gbps) fiber connections, and a OC-192 (10gbps) core network. They already are implementing a 5G capable back-haul solution, although 5G standards have yet to be defined. Maybe they should skip 4G altogether, by concentrating on 3.99G solutions today, and jump the rest of the industry on a 5G solution in a few years?????

Re: Do it!Coming from someone who used to be on the inside with T-Mobile as a Switch Network Operations Manager, I can say that what ever way they go they will have a good balance between the cost and the quality.
T-Mobile internal policy leans heavily on giving the customer a quality network.
Note: I should be a disgruntled ex-employee as I was downsized out of my job. Not long after winning T-Mobiles two highest awards (Peak Performer & T-Mobilizer). I was the guy that stayed in the New Orleans Switch during Katrina, ensuring we stayed on line.
I am not, because I saw the corporate wizdom (sic) in what they did. It allowed them to cut cost without any sacrifice to customers (quality)
I am still a T-Mobile paying customer; and as I tell my family and friends - If T-Mobile covers 90% of where you talk, you can't them. If they don't then go with who does or with Verizon as they also seem to be concerned with quality of service.

Re: Do it!spot on. I love tmobile in the city of new york. their 3G is phenomenal everywhere (well everywhere except maybe my home area which gets good 3g reception but probly a bit too saturated with 3g devices). i was with them since the time of voicestream. but i jumped ship when cingular came around and started sharing spectrum with tmobile). then at&T did their buildout of GSM/EDGE network. and then AT&T and cingular became one in the same. and then we migrated to the newer at&t spectrum. and then i experienced dropped calls. and then i didnt like it very much. so here i am back with Tmo 3G and loving it.

T-Mobile should put up one 5G tower (even though the technology is unknown) just so they can say we have the first 5G network!

I was a keyboard is a must but not any more. I have Droid and never use it except when flashing the rom or to root it.
I say if you want a physical keyboard get a Blackberry and keep them off the really smart phones like Android.
