Good for Tampa residents waiting on fiber, bad for Tampa residents who also enjoy architectural stability and working sewer, water, and gas lines: A Tampa user writes us: "These stories have been filling the local media for the past week; Apparently Verizon crews are breaking a average of one to two sewer, water, gas and reclaimed water lines each day as they lay fiber through the Tampa area." A Verizon spokesman says: "we are going to suspend operations and talk with our contractors and get to the bottom of this so we can minimize this sort of thing."

Is it really Verizon doing this?

Or is it out-sourced subcontractors?

Re: Is it really Verizon doing this?

I guess it's subcontractors but Verizon is owner of the line and may have to pay for damages.

@Level3.com

Florida has one of the nation's worst Utility On-Call systems, providing utilities and competitors a difficult challenge to be able to locate their facilities (the paint on the ground). On top of that, with the very high water table, it is difficutlt to get a decent tone on the cables and lines to locate them properly.

This is nothing new new Florida. If you researched any utility doing work in Florida, along with any other state, the number of utility strikes in Florida are nearly 50% higher than outside.

This has nothing to do with Verizon, their subcontractors - it is the support systems and geographic issues.....

Oh,boy here we go again....Did bellsouth pull out of FL or is it only in certain areas? Still actual deployment is well into 2005, maybe 2006...

Here in the Kansas City area

We have a company called Everest that offers phone, cable, and internet connectivity. They laid fiber throughout the city for their network. Everyday you would hear stories of them doing the same thing. Seems in our area alot of the older lines were not marked very well or were way off from their spots on the maps.

I for one would not want to be guessing about the location of that gas line.....

Re: This just in from the Verizon Press Office.......

your a retard, the funds are from investors in verizon, not from the goverments or any other places. When they break a pipe they will have to pay for it, that in turn means a higher bill for the customers to offset the cost of replaceing the pipes. I don't use verizon but I can tell you this I would rather they do it right the first time than have to pay more money to do it over again. If this had been a muni tax payer scam like some people wanted I am sure they would have continued to dig away breaking every pipe they can so they could milk more cash from the tax payers. You should give 2 secs of thought before you post such nonsense.

Why are people complaning about getting fiber already? What is wrong with you guys? SBC says 26 mbps for 18 million people in a few years and nothing but complaints about the slow 26mbps speeds. I suggest you filter your water and lay off the pills.

Re: This just in from the Verizon Press Office.......

justncredible works for RR or SBC. cause for some reason anything that comes up with a fiber system for the public he starts ranting and raving over it.

he did it with the Iowa story and now again with this story with VZ.

it maybe better that VZ is doing it but they have a higher risk of blowing up a neighborhood by hitting a gas line and breaking it than what the Munis have with failing.

Didnt we all learn never play with gas.

Hardly any gas lines in tampa. Almost all homes run on electric heat for the whole 2 months that the temp drops below 80. They are hitting water lines for the most part.

You might want to look around a bit. There is a lot of natural gas in Hillsborough County.

Where's the problem?

I don't care if I have to wallow in my own feces in the cold while thirsty... Give me 15 Mbps/2 Mbps internet, and let me worry about the small stuff.

Sure I'll sign up for it if it is faster than Charter - but just don't expect me to do any troubleshooting if there is a problem with the connection.... haha

Call before you dig

The problem in locating utilities is non-metallic pipe. Utility locator's are great at finding metal pipe, but vitrified clay soil pipe and plastic water and gas piping are very hard to find. There are ways to find non-metallic pipe be they are very time consuming and some like the rattler can damage fragile pipe. Not all pipes have ports to send wires down to trace a pipe. It takes a very quiet day for a "listener" to work - certainly will not work on a busy street.

The above information comes from work related conversations with a site utility locator's service person. I am not a utility locator service person.

Re: Call before you dig

This happens a lot in Florida. With all the construction in my area from the hurricanes, it's happening daily.

The problem isn't Verizon, it's Florida's problem. As usual, they are absolutely inept at anything that requires more than a high school diploma to perform.

They come by once a year and mark the water lines on my street. And every year, they are in different places. Either they are totally incompetant, or someone keeps mysteriously digging up our watermain and moving it in the middle of the night.

Plus, good luck finding an up to date map on important things like this. We had our fiber trunk that goes to our office across the street cut. The contractor had the most up to date maps supplied by the county. Our fiber wasn't on that map. It's been there for 6 years...

BS, GPR is very simple and extremely effective in finding all types of pipe, metal and non metal and it can be done in minutes.

mistakes happen

They will be digging again before we know it. At least they better be, they messed up some peoples yards already (and they are close to my house) They met on Saturday to get everything straight.

If they did it without breaking something that would be a miracle.

Running fiber through gas lines.

I recall reading articles that claimed it would be possible to run the fiber lines inside existing gas lines, eliminating much of the expense of running a separate line.

Did Verizon think it would be a bad idea to do that? Probably a maintenance nightmare...

Re: Running fiber through gas lines.

Verizon probably doesn't want to do that because they'd have to pay some sort of leasing rights to the gas company as well as the cities/counties.

I work in the Telecom industry in Tampa, and have been greatly impacted by Verizon contractors apparent disregard for underground utilities. Getting underground permits are very difficult these days with timeframes for approval sometimes averaging 60-90 days!! A permitting agent for the county told me Verizon averages one utility strike every 400'!!! So they put every other company through the ringer to get a permit, when Verizon does most of the damage. Must be nice to be the local LEC and get special treatment....

Hmmmm, I wonder how many times a day/week Verizon's cables get dug up by contractors. I know for a fact, that it is too many times!! As people have said above, Florida has a problem with utilities not being marked properly for various reasons.

Also, it is not Verizon per say but contractors hired by Verizon to do the work, it is those contractors who must take the responsibility. I also suspect that it isn't all their fault either as they can only go by what is marked out for them by yet more contractors.

So please spare us the Verizon bashing please, at least you guys are getting FIOS where as most of us will be waiting for some time. It just goes to show that people like you will never have anything good to say about certain companies even when they are trying to do something good.

Jeeez.....

Heres how it went for me.

Click for full size
In mid October Verizon subcontractors began horizontal drilling in front of my house. They started by drilling to the north and a couple hours later I noticed I had no water pressure. Looked outside and saw my street flooded like it had been raining solid for 40 days and 40 nights. I saw the water shooting up from the ground about 5 or 6 houses away.

I guess it took awhile to get the county involved to get the water shut off. Eventually it was shut off and later they were digging up the ground between the sidewalk and the street to replace a twenty-foot section of eight-inch water main. As you could image this takes awhile.

Now while the county is busy fixing the blown water main down the street, the Verizon subs decide to turn their drilling rig around and start drilling the other direction. This time they would be going under my yard/driveway to continue on to wherever.

Now time passes and its time to turn on the water from the break down the street. They open up a fire hydrant to help flush the lines and water is everywhere. At this very moment I happen to be standing at the end of my driveway and begin to notice water bubbling up from UNDER my driveway.

Yup you guessed it, they drilled into the water main under my driveway but had no idea that they did because the water was shut off from the first "incident". So I stand there waving my arms trying to get their attention like a maniac to get them to once again shut off the water. At least this time the county is already on the street.

They finally see me and head over to what is going on and signal one of the county workers to shut down the water. Well since it is damaged under the driveway, yes thats right they had to dig up my driveway from the sidewalk to the street. They dig it up and down to the water main and find the damage, which by chance is at the same spot damaged once before (maybe 20 years earlier).

After a number of hours they spice in a new section of water main and then have someone turn on the water one more time. Moment's later water is spewing from the ground where the new splice is. So they shut it down and find some of the hardware just was not tight enough. Once again they turn on the water and once again water is coming from under ground again. This time it's not the splice but they find an another damaged section under my mailbox.

So once more they go through the whole dig it up and fix it routine. They finally did get it all going and water was working.

It all started at about 10am and I had water again that night about 9pm. Oh and of course the whole boil water for two days thing because of a water main break. It took almost two weeks before they poured a new driveway for me. Fortunately I had neighbors that let me "share" their driveway during this time.

Now on the plus side of all this the driveway that they had to bust up to fix the water main was in bad shape so I did get a free driveway repair out of it.

Verizon water

Our local water company has been adding heavy chlorine into our water system since October. The smell from the kitchen faucet gets overwhelming at times and you have to use filtered water for drinking.
We've been told this will end in December.
