TechTV: How Profile4 Compares to iMac (old news - 02:33AM Wednesday Sep 04 2002)
Story here"Overall, the Gateway Profile 4 is a great attempt at an all-in-one LCD-equipped PC, and it has a reasonable price. But Gateway's attempt to pit it against the iMac, a sleek and well-designed piece of hardware with an excellent feature set and reasonable price, isn't a great idea...."

Umm... actually, IBM and Gateway had all-in-one LCD computers a year or two before the iMac.

| Cow vs. Apple? Even I think they're dumb First of all, who would want that Profile4? those profile PC's are absolute trash, and gateway's reputation isn't exactly as good as some others. The form of the Profile 4 seems to scream rip-off in some aspects, like having the integrated LCD monitor compared to the LCD iMac.
Though I mostly use x86's, Apple at least is doing good with the PPC platform. At least with the iMac, there is some degree of speed, even with only 256MB's of SDRAM and MacOS 10.1.5 (what I'm using at this moment to type this post on school campus). With the profile4, it's integrated everything, and all those integrated parts (NIC, video, sound) are very big memory hogs. if it's a Celeron, I could only beg to wonder how they would have the gall to charge even $1k for one of those. For a P4 inside, it would still suck, since what performance it would've had would be sucked up by the other components.
Also, you have to compare one big thing: Profile4 has floppy drive, Apple iMac has a Super drive, which could burn DVDs. An external floppy drive isn't that expensive anyway.
Though I typically use x86's, I have to side with Apple on this one. What was the cow thinking? I happened to see the new commercial where they were directly pitting the Profile4 vs. the LCD iMac, and even I thought it was stupid and ridiculous. Given between the two, if I had no choice for anything else... gimme that iMac instead. -- Everything AOL touches just plain sucks. End of Story! | |

Actually, the Gateway Profile was one of the first all-in-one LCD computers. Gateway and IBM had theirs out for a year or two before the LCD iMac, so I have to disagree with you there.
Not saying the iMac isn't better than the Gateway or IBM NetVista, just saying who made one first.

You wanna hear something funny?
When I first saw that commercial, I thought it was an Apple commercial.
I never expected the cow to come out, and for it to be a Gateway commercial.
Certainly the iMac is cooler.

Apparently everybody has forgotten Apple's 20th Anniversary PowerMac, introduced May 1997.
