DirecTV apparently setting the pace...

With satellite and cable operators continuing to ramp up their HD offerings, the phone companies will obviously need to keep pace. AT&T is preparing to launch a handful of new HD channels starting October 15. However, even with these channels included, their HD total is only 26 national channels -- DirecTV launched that many new HD channels in just the last few weeks. Meanwhile, many of our forum regulars are annoyed by Verizon's sluggish deployment of HD, and some sites try to explain the delay.

Re: sux

It's too bad that DirectTV has to blast rockets into space and deploy expensive satellites to deliver channels to you.

That's why wires are always better and more reliable than wireless.

Maybe in 50 years, wireless tech will outperform wired tech.

jackknife,DJ_Kismuth must think that the cable go from his home out to a poll, then arcoss the nation or through the Forrest & under the sea to the station doing the actual broadcast station & the world is flat,

I hate to have to tell him the world is round

Easy. I can get all my HD channels through one wire, along with phone and high speed internet. On the other hand, it apparently takes about 12 satellites to get all the channels down to a single customer, WITH a 33% cut in HD resolution.

In simple terms: satellite bandwidth sucks.

We're already paying... This, to me, is not added service. It is REPLACEMENT service. That's called the cost of doing business.

Better give the fuel to DirecTV, because NASA hasn't done a Commercial satellite in a long time. Try Sea Launch.

What HD channel?

Why do we keep hearing about HD channels and there are very few actual HD shows. Who cares about watching upconverted reruns of "Quantum Leap"? Is there a place to find out which channels have 100% HD content i.e. Discovery HD Theater. AT&T is smart by not following Comcast and DirectTV off a cliff. Let these two lemmings fight it out, then swoop in take them both down by offering "REAL HD" channels that people actually watch and want.

Gotta put the infrastructure in place before people start to use it. Now that the channels are HD capable to a growing audience, there will be more HD content. Kind of hard to do it the other way around.

Awesome range of movies show on these stations

Those are just the stations I watch. Not to mention the scores of Discovery channels offered, MHD, and what's still to come.

Most of the shows on these stations are not upconverted. If anything, they're actually being shown as filmed (which is already a good quality). The additional shows that are filmed in HD look amazing.

I don't know, I checked titantv.com tv listings for HD only content and I see only 16 channels. Even less depending on time of day and cable/sat operator.

The problem with the "100 HD channels" claim...

DirecTV gets their 100 channels claim by including all their "spot beam" *local* HDTV channels.

Basically ABC HD in Boston counts as one, and ABC HD in San Deigo counts too. No one user will actually *get* 100 channels. Plus they include their HDTV PPV.

So you can cut that number about in half. But still 50 is pretty good, considering before this launch they had I think around 13 (including the 4 major broadcast networks). Now they've added another 32 channels.

If only DTV didn't have such a big head...

Actually that is NOT true at all - D* has ALWAYS claimed 100 NATIONAL HD channels, which those "spot beam locals" obviously do NOT count toward. If this WAS true as you claim, they could have ALREADY done this w/out even adding much national channels, as they already ARE probably over 100 HD feeds with all the local HD markets they are already carrying.

Now, what they ARE probably counting toward the "100 NATIONAL HD channels" IS the RSN's that are moving to national beams. Of course, while everyone "nationally" CAN get all these if they so choose, (via the sports pak) they will NOT get any of the pro & college sports outside their designated markets.

The 100 channels only counts one of each local, so one ABC is counted once in that total.

I think the number of locals they said will be 250+ not counting the 100 national channels.

So if you want to count it that way they currenly have over 250 HD channels. which wouldnt be fair to do.

Not counting locals the current number of HD channels on DirecTv is 46. (Notice not counting PPV or NFL\NHL\MLB\Nascar like some people do)

Re: The problem with the "100 HD channels" claim...

ok one more time- not true.....There are national channels...There are 46 today and there Will be as many as 100 (if there are that many HD channels to broadcast) around the end of the year. Then there are local channels- at some point directv will provide 4 to 5 channels into each local market (all 210 of them)

The total of ALL channels is around 1500 channels of which each local sub can receive around 105 of. Next year they will have the ability to add another 50 national channels...taking each persons total to around 150.

Charter will follow, maybe

I haven't heard a peep from Charter, and I expect I won't be seeing any new HD channels for probably another 2-3 years, at the speed they improve anything they do.

And I just left DTV in June...I'd consider going back if I wasn't now living in a heavily forested area with next to no DTV line-of-sight, and Charter wouldn't rape me for breaking their little bundle.

Sheesh. Article should be titled "Is anyone keeping up with DTV?"

Re: Charter will follow, maybe

At least Charter has added a few channels over the past couple of months to some regions. My area just gained MOJO, History-HD, and A&E-HD last week. I would never have asked for two mostly Stretch-O-Vision networks and one which airs even more fluff than it did under the InHD moniker, but Charter has at least done something. Will that pace and selection keep the bulk of their customers from defecting to DSS systems in two years? Nope, but their debt status and lack of imagination will not allow them to save the sinking ship.

I also wish that I had a line-of-site to DirecTV's birds, but that isn't the case. I just have to hold out for the eventual Charter system sale to another company or the availability of UVerse in my area (which is probably at least a year away, hopefully in sync with the line bonding implementation).

Meh on DirecTV

I just got Verizon Fios and I truly love it. Granted I wish we had TBS HD (so I could see the MLB games in HD) along with others. However, the service that is provides has been pretty good. Yes DirecTV has a junk load of channels (I think the guide says like 9000 or whatever), but there's a reason why they advertise the amount of channels. Wired is the way to go. What good is having 100 HD channels if the feed turns crappy from a little drizzle?

If you got Fios in the area, get it. The HD channels will come. Just be patient and enjoy all those features for a good price. Oh and Multi-Room DVR is so sweet!

Directv HD - Awesome PQ

Since the new channels arrived, the picture quality has been awesome. Better then before. I think people now realize that what directv did, was a legit move in being the leader.
