Verizon & AT&T face uphill build-out battle
(old news - 09:04AM Friday Dec 08 2006)
tags: dsl · Fiber · competition · cable · stats
Light Reading reminds everyone that while it's nice to see the ILECs upgrading their networks, they've got a lot of work left to do before we can bask in competitive utopia. "It's important to remember that Verizon's FTTH-based FiOS and AT&T's DSL-based U-verse are very different animals, and together, they will only cover one-third of homes passed by US MSOs by the end of the decade," says analyst Michael Harris. "Not exactly ubiquitous." As for AT&T's threat to cable, he suggests that offering 30Mbps as a standard speed "ought to put a damper on Ma Bell's bundle," since the telco is only offering 6 of the 25Mbps VDSL2 pipe for customer data.

Competition....

Once a competitor offers something, the other services have to follow suits. "Ma Bell" always keeps a tradition of following their customers...rather than providing new services ahead of the need. If only one of the providers upgrade the other will follow suit.

Competitive Utopia

We will never be at a competitive utopia because by the time they get FTTH to "every home" there will be a better technology there that everyone will then want.

so the bottom line is....

don't hold your breath waiting for the benefits of competition from fiber or VDSL+, because there won't really be that much competition?

And in 2/3 of cable's coverage area there won't be any competition at all from advanced telco services?

I guess duopolies move slow and monopolies don't move at all.

I wonder if local wimax ISPs some time in the near future will not bring about some change in that? Thoughts?

Re: so the bottom line is....

Clearwire has just started offering wimax service to much of the Seattle metro area. But with a top download speed of 1.5mbit, it's not much of a competitor to the local DSL or cable offerings. It would be attractive if the only alternative was sat-based offerings, but it's not really much of an option to the local duopoly.
