Telcos Invited to Make Use of Tru2Way Although it's not considered very useful as of yet Tru2Way is an invention of the cable company which is intended to allow for the integration of set-top box functionality into TVs and other viewing devices. These devices can be used with any cable operator. And the president of CableLabs has also invited the telcos to go ahead and join in as well. "The bottom line here is that tru2way is open, he said in prepared remarks. It is not exclusive to cable but is available to any multichannel provider that chooses to implement it on their network and in devices." This offer has the potential to create a series of new applications for interactive TV viewing. However, initial tests of Tru2Way called it a disaster so the telephone companies may not be rushing to get on board.

| | Big disaster! I love it when non-programmers think you can write software that is bug-free. Makes me chuckle. | |

If (as is more likely) it's "open" to anyone who wants to license the technology, then it remains to be seen just what, if anything, that's worthwhile gets off the ground. -- "Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea."

From the users point of view, its a black box, as closed as one can get. The users are totally controlled by the people its "Open" for.

| | | glad it is a 'disaster' I sincerely hope 'Tru2way' fails.

Cable companies have stated that two way communications by third party devices on their networks will require them to support OCAP. The Consumer Electronics Association and other groups argue OCAP is intended to block features that compete with cable company provided services and that consumers should be entitled to add, delete and otherwise control programs as on their personal computers.

I want choice of gui, epg, etc, not just what the cablco decodes to foist upon us... Exactly! It would be awesome if the interface ran on apache/php so that users could tweak it.

1 edit | Why not have 1 master box in each home + mini boxes or other Why not have 1 master box in each home + mini boxes, cable card, qam, or other stuff on each tv. You can put the dvd in the master box. You can use WIFI, cat 5 / cat 5e / cat 6/ or cable to get to each tv. You can also push out analog to the tvs as well.
Direct Tv is working on a full home DRV system and some said it's wifi based.
