| Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The blurb seemed like it was leaning toward what the Cableco's say, that everybody wants premium speeds since most Telco customers are also going with the higher tiers (my read: stats like that could push the Telco's to eliminate the lower tiers). What I should have said was why alienate people the way the Cableco's do. The article claims the majority of their customers are on higher tiers, but last I checked, 42% and 31% are not a majority, so the majority of total customers are still on lower plans, but the majority of new subscribers are going for faster speeds (as stated further on). | |

| People want faster speeds! HELLO! Kick it in the pants! Providers are dragging their feet on something that is a no-brainer.
I don't like Verizon, but I will give credit where credit is due - at least SOMEONE is pulling the stick out of the mud!
Far superior transmision medium and faster speeds! Kudos Verizon!
Now, if some of the other ISPs would wake the f*** up and start dishing out some more horsepower, things might get interesting...

| If you upgrade some RTs.... Just imagine how much higher that percentage would be. I have DSL from AT&T and I'm on the edge of the distance range and I can barely hold 1.5Mbps without any trouble. I would love to go faster but it's impossible until the upgrade the RT that my POTS is on. -- "Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do onto me!" | They can thank Youtube and Myspace Kids are maxing out the home network making mommy and daddy frustrated with the cheap speed tier they originally signed up for.
I've had 6mb DSL every since they came out with that speed. It was $140 when I started. Now I'm paying $27 from AT&T.

I would upgrade but can't get over 950 down on a 1.5 tier now.

| Contradiction Wait a minute, I thought the impression of the Telco's and cable companies is people don't need fast speed or that people don't want it. Doesn't that contradict the article? They only give fast speeds when there is competition but when there is no competition they tell you what is fast enough. | |

| Re: Contradiction My telco doesn't offer faster speeds in the face of competition. The telco deployed fiber and a 1.5x256 marketed solution when there wasn't competition. Then three years ago the cable competitor started offering 3Mbps service, and a year ago upgraded it to 4 at no additional charge.
Last I heard the telco will upgrade from 1.5x256 fiber in the 2008 or later timeframe. So, I do not see the telco competing in my neighborhood, or any of the neighborhoods that make up the ~250,000 households enslaved by this telco.

| Like DuH! Like we just want 1.5Mbps? I have 3 Pcs and 2 Laptops on my network in my home and when all 5 are online, I like to have a fat pipe to handle the load. Try sharing that many computers on a 1.5Mbps line. I have a need for speed! Zoom, Zoom! | |

| Faster was cheaper than slower for me When faster is cheaper than slower, I'll take faster.
I was paying $14.95 for 1500. That would have expired in Septemer 2006 and my rate would have gone to $19.99. They solicited me at $17.99 to go to 3000, so I signed up for that for one year. We'll see what they're offering next summer. -- USNG:16TDN2870 Find your Lat-Long: Geocoder

| Amazing What you buy and what you actually get has a great deal to do with your state and your city and how whell they enforce the contract they have with the telco and cable guy.
The hot 3 mpbs is actually more like 512 where I live; I'm paying $60 for it and basic cable. I'm moving to a new location where telco offers 8000/2000 and a complete phone bundle for the same price. Since I will be sandwiched between two metropolutan areas I might acutally win. What a deal. -- Mac: No windows, No gates, Apple inside
