Admits to lying to competitors about full exchanges...
08:50AM Tuesday Aug 11 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: legal · competition · business · world
In a bit of candor you'd simply never see Verizon or AT&T caught making, Telstra has admitted to an Australian court that it has been blocking competitors from accessing to their exchanges in order to add customers. According to a court filing, Telstra refused access at seven of its metropolitan exchanges by claiming they were full and there was no capacity left for rivals to install new equipment. The company also published lists of capped exchanges on the Telstra wholesale website. Telstra's new CEO David Thodey is apparently eager to "clear the deck of any embarrassing anti-competitive misdemeanors," as he takes over from former Telstra boss Sol Trujillo.

At least he's starting on the right foot...

So far he's doing things right by exposing the idiocy of the former boss and actually making an attempt to right what was wrong. Rather then just creating a massive coverup that leads to his eventual force out for not making things known.

I'm in agreement with you. This is quite possibly the first time I've seen a CEO take the honest approach rather than the "what's our stock currently trading at?" approach.

Not to say this wipes the slate clean for Telstra, or for this new CEO's image (I have no idea about his history), but it is a step in the right direction.

There are many CEOs that take the honest approach. You don't hear about them as the news about the dishonest ones drown out the regular, everyday "right thing to do" news the good ones make. Plus often the good ones also stick around at a company for a while and don't jump to dishonest companies to begin with.

Well then we need more positive coverage of CEOs' actions. When it comes to press coverage, negativity always makes the headlines...

Not that Sol cared what the Telstra share price was anyway.

At one time he even admitted he was pleased that he had caused the share price to drop. So much for looking out for the share holders, as he so often claimed he was doing...

AT&T would never do such a thing....

I went to the largest site in our LATA and got to see the Clec room. 50% of the space was taken up with gear that dated back to the late 70s to early 80s. Some of it still had a few lines so they could claim the gear was still in service. The guy that took me there said that AT&T would leave this stuff in place so they could claim they were "full" or use it to limit the space that the CLecs could occupy.

AT&T would do no such thing? AT&T would sit back and laugh.

I live in a fairly small city and we have a CLEC here operating on Verizon's line. They are called Richmond Networx. A bit expensive, but have heard many say the service and support is good enough to warrant it.

For Telstra:

"Honesty Is Not The Best Policy"

At least, apparently, not when you're a CEO. Telstra's new CEO David Thodey, after only 3 months in the position, has resigned due to "health complications". Despite concerns by some public advocacy groups, former CEO Sol Trujillo has again taken the reigns at Telstra.

never would happen in USA

It should be clear that this is a lawsuit that would never exist in the USA. Its "Australian Competition and Consumer Commission" vs Telstra. When was the last time the FCC or FTC sued Verizon or AT&T for something that didn't result in gift certificates and drastically changes the business model/strategy?
