Even our Constitutional rights, e.g., to free speech and to bear arms, could be taken away by another amendment to the Constitution. 'Permanent' laws can always be reviewed and changed, there's just no pre-set time for the arguing to begin.  | |

But the question is, with so many representatives voting for it, why not create a permanent version of the ban? There is obliviously big support for the temporary ban on both sides of the fence, at least in the house. What is preventing the Congress to make the ban permanent?
Hopefully if the temporary ban passes the congress can work on a permanent broadband tax ban and pass it before the next deadline on November 1, 2011.

I think I remember seeing on my COMCAST High-Speed Internet bill something about state & city sales tax under INTERNET taxes, surcharges and fees.
Why do you we pay taxes on services anyway? I thought you only paid taxes on parts and retail items not items like labor and services.

Why do I pay state taxes on my DirecTV service when they don't have a physical presence here?
They don't use right of ways or tear up roads, all they do is beam their signal to me but I have to pay the taxes anyway.
I will tell you why I pay these taxes, it because the greedy little bastards want my money any chance they have to get it. And what are they going to do with it? They are going to waste it on some nonsense or give it to some low life that thinks the World owes him something who has never done a honest days work for an honest days pay in his life, but instead he just waits for daddy Government to fork it over to him.
That is the Government's Great Plan to redistribute the wealth of those that do to those that won't. That is why every year I keep track of everything and jump through every legal loophole that I can to see that the least amount of my dimes go to people that won't hit a lick, if it were up to me I would let him starve to death and if he had children they could starve to death too. Maybe seeing his children starve to death would give him some incentive to do something instead of wait for daddy Government to hand it to him on a silver platter with a note that says "Complements of those that do.", wait a minute what am I thinking they don't get a note every month when they get their check telling them that their money comes form those that do, but that would never happen because he might get his little feelings hurt and we wouldn't want that now would we.
Just how much pride can a man have that has never done anything for himself? | |

I was the third person to have DirecTV in my town, first was the owner of Crabtree Furniture Company, second was the Mayor of our town, and then me. I also installed theirs too. I bought two deluxe receivers with deluxe remotes, dish with dual output LNB, and a self-install kit that came with wiring and a cheap little compass.
I have had DirecTV service since day one and I think that I paid about $1200.00 for all of my equipment.
It is not that hard to do because it comes with a manual and as a side benefit you can even see the satellites at night.
All you need is a little common sense and some mechanical aptitude and the will to do it. | |

Let's see, one of the two who voted against it was Anna Eshoo (D-CA) - author and lead sponsor of the PERMANENT ban on internet taxes that wouldn't allow taxation of iptv and many other web services, unlike the bill that passed, and hmm.. her bill had 240 co-sponsors.
This bill was forced through because the state government defenders like Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and John Conyers (D-MI) were doing everything in their power to block the efforts of Eshoo in the House and Wyden in the Senate.
Perhaps when the tech community shows an inkling of situational awareness when it comes to technology issues, they might actually have a useful impact on the process. Until that time, every time a public policy decision goes the wrong way for good technology policy, look in the mirror. | |

| Whats wrong with paying taxes? I love people who are opposed to new taxes no matter what. As we continue this so called war on terror and iraq disaster where is the sacrifice? During WWII this nation came together for the common good of defeating Nazi germany and Iperial Japan. We sacrificed. yet as we spen 40 billion dollars per month there is no call to sacrifice. Why not implement the Internet tax say 2 dollars per connection and call it a war on terror tax. Who would be against that? The money is to be used only for funding war on terror. 18 years ago when crime was out of control in NYC Then Mayor David Dinkins asked for New Yorkers to sacrifice and pay a safe streets safe city tax. They did and although it took time to hire and train the additional 20 thousand new cops they produced remarkable results. Oh yeah it was not Guiliani who did this as the media would have you beleive. | |

Maybe people are against funding something that shouldn't have been. And if you give an inch, they'll take a mile. Don't complain when you're drowning in taxes.
Also, what purpose is the tax for? In case the senators want to increase their six-figure salary, more dead soldiers, or to help broadband companies? | |

HOWEVER... you cannot just make up your own facts and create your own history to bolster your opinion. Your statement that I quoted is not demonstrably true and you have no facts to back it up. It just ranks up there with the other "blogesphere" falsehoods and conspiracy theories, and I couldn't let it go.

Let them sacrifice, cut thier pay, make them pay for travel, make them pay taxes on "donations".
How about cutting some useless programs?
How about instituting a flat tax and axing the entire IRS? That would wipe out and entire dept or the government AND force the workers to find jobs where thier salary is not a drain on the economy but a contributer.
The more "services" that are cut from the government at all levels the better. Yes I mean welfare and food stamps too.
There is far too much fraud, waste, and abuse.
People actually need to read the constitution.
From the preable: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Notice that it does not say "provide the general wellfare" but promote.
In the past, if you were having a tough time of it, your family, neighbors and friends were the ones you turned to. If you were an A-Hole, well your provisions were likely to be meager.
Notice also it does say "Provide for the common defence".
Just a question, now that the crime rate in NYC has dropped so drammaticly, SURELY the taxes have dropped too? RIGHT? | |
