In Texas, as in every other place that allows forming cooperatives, the co-op charges its operating cost plus a small reserve. Anything above that amount (and the reserve is usually set by the bylaws, which can be modified by a vote of the members) must be returned to the members either as cash or a credit against the member's bill.
It's not so much "fair market" as it is "where you live costs more to serve but we're not making a mint off of you, either." -- Opinions expressed here are mine and not my employer's. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

From what I can tell, this is pretty much a company built to serve those who can't get service anywhere else. (at least that was the original plan, they have probably expanded since) Their pricing would be high in most major cities, but they are doing this in places where no one else will even run the line. Those higher costs have to get paid somehow. And with that in mind, the prices seem pretty reasonable. -- Intel Q6600 @3400Mhz/GA-EP35-DS3P/4x 2048Mb G.Skill/WD Raptor 300Gb/3x WD20EADS 2TB/2x PNY GTX 260/Silverstone 850W/Custom water cooler/Antec Twelve-Hundred

| above average pricing once you get beyond 50 megabits.. the price should be around $1 per megabit. instead this is $2.50+ per mbit as a monopoly that's what you get for having no competition, but if there's a cable or other telco overlapping, these prices can come down cause I know verizon's FIOS price per mbit is somewhat lower than that | |

Yes, Verizon has faster speeds and lower prices than GVTC, however Verizon only offers DSL in areas GVTC serves. They've given up on rural areas from a wireline perspective, so the premium over VZ's product is worth it since, you know, you can actually get FTTH in the area where you want it, versus otherwise.

| Speed... even if... Even if they achieve the speeds that they are aiming at, the US will still be back in about the fifth row somewhere where internet speed and availability are currently sitting on the world stage. The only answer to this difficiancy will be to borrow some more money from China. | |

| Who cares about speeds - what about caps? Who cares about speeds anymore? There's nothing here about unlimited caps for this service, so I bet that all this 80/20 service does is allow you to hit the cap faster.
The 12/2 service I have is the lowest price that Comcast charges, and it's fast enough for almost most current Internet applications. The killer app for me would be online backup, and that does require a higher connections speed. I would subscribe to a higher service plan, but there's no point in paying for their "extreme" 100Mbps package when you just hit their caps faster - and you can't use online backup with caps.
Raise the caps, and I'll pay for 80/20 service or whatever these ISPs are willing to offer. Otherwise, these sort of press releases are garbage to me.
