Texas ISP GVTC Offer 80 Mbps
Bumps Fiber Speeds in South Texas
by Karl Bode Friday 27-May-2011 tags: Fiber · competition · business · bandwidth
Tipped by iansltx See Profile
User iansltx See Profile directs our attention to the fact that Texas's largest telephone cooperative has just launched a new 80 Mbps downstream, 20 Mbps upstream fiber broadband tier. The move comes on the heels of the company deploying 40 Mbps service back in 2009. According to the GVTC pricing page, the new 80 Mbps tier is being offered for $210 standalone, $205 if part of a double-play bundle, or $200 if part of a triple play bundle. The company still offers 20/3 service ($75, $70, $65) and 40/10 ($100, $95, $90) service for users who don't need the 80 Mbps. According to the company, these tiers come without usage caps. According to the company's website, they're running a sweepstakes that offers the first 25 existing customers who ask a free upgrade from their current tier for 30 days (their Facebook page says one of those gets the upgrade for six months).

Never heard of them, lol, but at least they are upgrading just like Suddenlink has done. Although there prices seem a bit steep for the speeds

Co-Op=NOT for profit. Meaning they're charging fair market and usually what they're paying for it.

Re: I Live in texas and...

In Texas, as in every other place that allows forming cooperatives, the co-op charges its operating cost plus a small reserve. Anything above that amount (and the reserve is usually set by the bylaws, which can be modified by a vote of the members) must be returned to the members either as cash or a credit against the member's bill.

It's not so much "fair market" as it is "where you live costs more to serve but we're not making a mint off of you, either."

GVTC

Only offers FTTH in the hill country i.e. north of San Antonio. I dont understand how they do it. My cousin that lives around the middle of nowhere gets FTTH now. Why? Because they started building mansions out there. Even then theres not that many people around him. I am jealous.

Prices

Are there any normal price points (i.e. $50)? If there aren't that is just bound to be a failure, or have very limited subscribers. I guess it also depends on the competition.

Re: Prices

GVTC's ISP side has been around a long time. I worked for one of their backend providers in 1998 doing tech support during the Golden Era of Dialup.

From what I can tell, this is pretty much a company built to serve those who can't get service anywhere else. (at least that was the original plan, they have probably expanded since) Their pricing would be high in most major cities, but they are doing this in places where no one else will even run the line. Those higher costs have to get paid somehow. And with that in mind, the prices seem pretty reasonable.

Yes. 12M down, 1.5M up for that price. Not blow-your-mind speedy, but not bad either.

Re: Prices

Well, I guess if there's no other option paying $75-$100/mo for a sweet fiber line would be a lot better than not having another option. Still can't match Verizon's FIOS bundle that has 43/35 internet in it.

You guys think High Speed Broadband should be way below $50, but the truth is the latest Technology is expensive. If you want FTTH you are going to have to pay for it!

Re: Prices

They have cheaper options. They're just lower-speed. e.g. you can get 768/128 for $30 per month standalone, $20 per month as part o a triple play. 1.5/384, 5/512 and 8/1 are each $5 more than the next lowest tier.

I want FTTH and am willing to pay for it but wait! NOBODY offers it here!

Oh Texas

Always need to have the biggest of everything. Meanwhile, in densely populated Washington DC, 1Mbps is the highest upload speed I can buy on a connection.

above average pricing

once you get beyond 50 megabits.. the price should be around $1 per megabit. instead this is $2.50+ per mbit
as a monopoly that's what you get for having no competition, but if there's a cable or other telco overlapping, these prices can come down cause I know verizon's FIOS price per mbit is somewhat lower than that

Re: above average pricing

TWC competes with GVTC in some areas. TWC 50/5 is $100, same as GVTC's 40/10. TWC doesn't have anything above 50/5.

Yes, Verizon has faster speeds and lower prices than GVTC, however Verizon only offers DSL in areas GVTC serves. They've given up on rural areas from a wireline perspective, so the premium over VZ's product is worth it since, you know, you can actually get FTTH in the area where you want it, versus otherwise.

I have Suddenlink in Texas and I pay $65 a month for phone and internet at 10mb down/1mb up. The prices you listed for the new service are way higher in comparison. I can jump a tier to the higher download speeds for just $10 more each tier.

Speed... even if...

Even if they achieve the speeds that they are aiming at, the US will still be back in about the fifth row somewhere where internet speed and availability are currently sitting on the world stage. The only answer to this difficiancy will be to borrow some more money from China.

Who cares about speeds - what about caps?

Who cares about speeds anymore? There's nothing here about unlimited caps for this service, so I bet that all this 80/20 service does is allow you to hit the cap faster.

The 12/2 service I have is the lowest price that Comcast charges, and it's fast enough for almost most current Internet applications. The killer app for me would be online backup, and that does require a higher connections speed. I would subscribe to a higher service plan, but there's no point in paying for their "extreme" 100Mbps package when you just hit their caps faster - and you can't use online backup with caps.

Raise the caps, and I'll pay for 80/20 service or whatever these ISPs are willing to offer. Otherwise, these sort of press releases are garbage to me.
